International Museum Day 2025

ICOM has been organizing the International Museum Day for over 40 years. The 2025 edition will take place on May 18th. Please join our GLAM digital event on the 18th of May at 6 pm CET.
Shaping the Future
Museums are key contributors to building sustainable futures together with communities. As trusted institutions and important threads in our shared social fabric, they are uniquely placed to create a cascading effect to foster positive change. There are many ways in which museums can contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals: from fostering innovation and inclusivity to promoting resilience and championing sustainable development. Every year since 2020, the International Museum Day supports a set of Goals from the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. In 2025, we will focus on:
Goal 8 – Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all
- Museums foster local economies through job opportunities in the arts and cultural sectors. Additionally, they can offer educational programs and skill-building workshops that empower individuals and promote inclusive, sustainable economic growth within communities.
- Museums promote innovation and creativity through exhibitions, workshops, and collaborations with technology and design sectors. They can also support by showcasing innovations in sustainable development practices and providing platforms for emerging technologies, helping to drive resilient infrastructure and foster economic development.
- Museums act as cultural hubs that support the development of sustainable and resilient communities in a rapidly changing world. Through exhibitions and programs focused on youth engagement, intangible heritage, and the integration of new technologies, museums provide platforms for dialogue on how urban spaces can adapt to social and environmental shifts. By connecting the past with the future, museums help shape cities that are inclusive, safe, and sustainable, while fostering a sense of belonging and resilience among diverse communities.
