Privacy Tips for Wikimedia Contributors
When contributing to Wikimedia projects, it's important to protect your privacy while maintaining transparency. Here are key recommendations:
- Username Selection: Choose a username that doesn't reveal personal information (avoid real names, birthdates, or identifiers)
- Personal Information: Never post private information about yourself or others (addresses, phone numbers, etc.)
- Email Privacy: Your email address is only visible to you and Wikimedia administrators unless you choose to display it publicly
- IP Address Protection: Logged-in users have their IP addresses hidden from public view in page histories
- User Page Content: Be cautious about what personal details you include on your user page
- Password Security: Use a strong, unique password and enable two-factor authentication
- Alternative Accounts: Create separate accounts for different roles if needed, but avoid sockpuppetry
Remember that all edits are permanently recorded and publicly visible, even if you later remove content.
