Overview
[edit]Komunitas Wikimedia Perempuan (Women Wikimedia Community) is a volunteer-driven community within the Wikimedia movement dedicated to increasing women's participation, leadership, and representation across Wikimedia projects. The community was founded on 8 March 2025, coinciding with International Women's Day (IWD), as a collaborative space that empowers women to contribute, share knowledge, and grow within the free knowledge ecosystem.
The idea for establishing the community emerged from the experience of an Indonesian Wikimedia volunteer who participated in WikiWomenCamp 2023. The international gathering brought together women from different countries and Wikimedia communities to exchange experiences, strengthen networks, and discuss efforts to address gender gaps in open knowledge. The inspiration and insights gained from the event contributed to the vision of creating a community dedicated to empowering women within the Wikimedia movement in Indonesia.
During the WikiPerempuan Month activities in March 2025, discussions arose regarding the importance of having a dedicated community space that supports women's participation in Wikimedia. With the encouragement and support of the Wikimedia Indonesia Education Team, these discussions evolved into the establishment of Komunitas Wikimedia Perempuan as a platform for learning, collaboration, and mutual support among women contributors.
Background
[edit]Komunitas Wikimedia Perempuan was established in response to the continuing underrepresentation of women within the Wikimedia movement. According to a 2018 Wikimedia Foundation survey, only around 9% of Wikipedia contributors identified as women. This imbalance has contributed to gaps in representation, both in knowledge production and in the content available across Wikimedia projects. Several challenges remain evident:
- Women continue to be underrepresented among Wikimedia contributors.
- Content related to women is still not equally represented in terms of quantity and quality.
- Many notable women, historical narratives, and women's contributions remain insufficiently documented.
- Women's perspectives are not yet proportionally reflected within open knowledge spaces.
These gaps exist not only on Wikipedia but across many Wikimedia projects. Komunitas Wikimedia Perempuan was established to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive space that encourages more women to contribute to free knowledge. Through education, mentorship, and collaborative initiatives, the community promotes women's participation, improves the representation of women-related content, and supports equitable access to knowledge across Wikimedia platforms. The community encourages contributors from diverse backgrounds to document women's achievements, preserve cultural and historical narratives, and contribute to projects such as Wikipedia, Wikiquote, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and Wiktionary.
Objectives
[edit]The objectives of Komunitas Wikimedia Perempuan are to:
- Increase women's participation and engagement within Wikimedia Indonesia.
- Foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive space for women contributors.
- Expand and improve content related to women across Wikimedia projects.
- Encourage women to take active roles in the Wikimedia community.
