What is the Language Diversity Conference?

The Language Diversity Conference is a global gathering dedicated to advancing linguistic diversity and inclusion within the Wikimedia ecosystem and the broader open knowledge movement. It serves as a platform for collaboration among Wikimedians, language activists, researchers, and cultural institutions working to promote, document, and revitalize languages.

When and where will the Language Diversity Conference 2026 take place?

The inaugural edition of the Language Diversity Conference will take place in Accra, Ghana, at the Fiesta Royale Hotel from October 2-4, 2026.

Why was “Strengthening Language Communities in the Open Knowledge Movement” chosen as the theme?

The theme reflects the commitment to empowering language communities to take ownership of their knowledge and presence in digital spaces. It emphasizes collaboration, technology, and inclusion as pathways to preserve linguistic heritage and ensure representation for all languages on Wikimedia and beyond.

Will the event be in-person, hybrid, or virtual?

The inaugural edition will be in person, with selected sessions streamed online to ensure participation from global communities who may not be able to attend physically.

What is the main language of the event?

The main language will be English, but interpretation and side sessions in local and regional languages will be encouraged to support inclusivity and accessibility.

Who is organizing the event?

The conference is hosted by Wikitongues and the Wikimedia Language Diversity Hub, in collaboration with the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group as the regional partner. It is supported by the Wikimedia Foundation and other organizations promoting linguistic and cultural diversity.

Who is this event for?

The conference welcomes Wikimedians, language activists, researchers, educators, linguists, cultural heritage organizations, and anyone passionate about language preservation, diversity, and representation in the open knowledge movement.

How can I register?

Registration opens on ………, and will remain open until …………, or until all available seats are filled.

Is there a fee to attend?

Yes. Aside from volunteers, committee members, and scholarship recipients, all participants are expected to contribute a registration fee of 90 USD. This fee helps cover logistics, meals, and conference materials.

If this amount is beyond your means, you are encouraged to apply as a volunteer or contact the organizers to request fee accommodation.

Are scholarships available?

Yes. Scholarship applications will open in ……… and will support participants from underrepresented language communities. Selection will be based on diversity, community engagement, and need.

Can I propose a session, workshop, or panel?

Yes! The Call for Program Proposals will open in ………... We welcome creative, collaborative, and practical session ideas related to language diversity, Wikimedia, and open knowledge.

Can I volunteer at the event?

Absolutely! Volunteers can assist with registration, coordination, note-taking, tech support, and more. Volunteers contributing at least 4 hours will have full access to conference sessions and activities.

Will there be translation or multilingual support?

Yes. The main sessions will be in English, but interpretation and side sessions in Ghanaian and other regional languages will be supported. Efforts will also be made to ensure keynotes and panel sessions are accessible through multilingual tools.

Is the venue accessible for people with disabilities?

Yes. The conference venue in Accra is wheelchair accessible. Contact the organizers if you need additional support or accommodations.

Will there be photographers or recordings?

Yes. Official photographers and videographers will document parts of the event. If you prefer not to be photographed, you may indicate it during registration and request a red lanyard at the venue.

Will the conference follow the Wikimedia Friendly Space Policy?

Yes. The Wikimedia Friendly Space Policy and Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC) will be fully enforced throughout the event to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all participants.
