How to improve monument lists.

What problem does this solve?[edit]

Creating lists of cultural heritage sites or monuments is an important part of organizing a Wiki Loves Monuments contest. This can be difficult to do if cultural herritage is not well documented in your area or if you do not know how to find documentation.

This learning pattern will share strategies for getting access to lists of cultural heritage sites or monuments.

What is the solution?[edit]

Things to consider[edit]

  • Check whether the country in question enjoys Freedom of Panorama, or not. Many countries around the world do not have this exception in their copyright law. If your country does not have Freedom of Panorama (FoP), try to avoid adding to the list cultural heritage sites that fully or even partially contain architecture, art installations or other objects, which are still under copyright protection. Photographing them would produce potentially non-free derivative works, and these are subject to deletion in the free multimedia repository Wikimedia Commons. The concept of FoP is generally unknown, and hard to explain to non-Wikimedians (and even to some Wikimedians!), while many of the participants in the Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM) contests are by definition non-Wikimedians, and not expected to know legalese. Avoiding the inclusion of non-FoP sites in the WLM list would decrease the chance of having some of the submissions listed for deletion and deleted, thus having puzzled, unhappy or angry contest participants.
