What is the Wikimedia Commons?

Wikimedia Commons is the largest repository of free-to-use images in the world. It's home to more than 60 million pictures, including the photos and illustrations you see in Wikipedia articles. Without photographers uploading their work to Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia would just be text! If you take a high quality photo during this event, it could end up illustrating a Wikipedia article and being seen by millions of people.

Who Are the North Carolina Wikipedians?

North Carolina Wikipedians is a local group of Wikipedia users promoting the free knowledge ecosystem in North Carolina. Our group runs events with the people and institutions of North Carolina to help everyone contribute to projects like Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.

Guidelines and Best Practices

Remember that any photographs uploaded to the Commons -- including photographs of identifiable people -- can be reused for commercial purposes without your consent.
  • With this campaign, we’re hoping to increase representation of lesser-known natural, cultural, and historic sites across the state. Great photos will highlight what makes North Carolina unique and inspiring – bonus points for interesting composition, rare wildlife, and intriguing lighting.
  • Upload your photos to Wikimedia Commons during the event period, May 22 to June 22, 2022
    • Photos taken before the event period are allowed. If you have an excellent picture from a North Carolina site taken in the past, you're welcome to upload that, too.
  • If you've previously published the photo (for example, posting to social media), you may be contacted to complete an additional step to make sure you're the same person who published it elsewhere.

In-person events

We won’t be hosting in-person events this year, but may have related in-person events in the future. If you’d like to find out about what we’re planning, sign up for our User Group’s listserv.
