Making the Reply tool available for all[edit]

The [reply] tool is now available (default-on) for all users at all WMF-hosted wikis except Meta-Wiki, Wikispecies, and the Russian and English Wikipedias. It's a popular tool and has been used to post more than 500,000 comments on the wikis so far, 100% of which were signed and ::::indented. You can see people using it in RecentChanges.

If you want to try it out, then click to reload this page, and look for the [reply] buttons after each signature. If you want to use it on all pages, then go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures and turn on "Discussion tools". The link and the Beta Feature include several other tools, such as [subscribe] and a simplified tool for creating a ==New section==. I think that automatic topic subscriptions would be particularly good for Meta-Wiki (so people will get notified about replies even if they aren't pinged and without needing to remember to check their watchlists on Meta-Wiki), but only the [reply] tool itself is ready to be deployed now.

I'd like to ask the Editing team to deploy the [reply] tool the next time they're making a config change (could be next week, could be when it's deployed to enwiki in January). Before I do that, I wanted to let you know and make sure that I hadn't missed any significant problems. Please let me know if you have any concerns. Thanks, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 19:10, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Whatamidoing (WMF): I've been using the beta (opt-in) feature for quite some time here, and I find it helpful; so no concerns from me. Thanks. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:20, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't care for it, but as long as it is opt-in, no big deal - so sure. — xaosflux Talk 16:40, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think we should turn this on as an opt-out – on by default for everyone, and you can turn it off if you don't want it. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 17:46, 13 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
This has finally happened. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:51, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Whatamidoing (WMF): I've deactivated the Beta Feature from Preferences. It looks it's working as before (using it right now to reply). Thanks, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 21:02, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for confirming. Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion has the prefs. With the Beta Feature off, I don't know if you will see the full list (e.g., for topic subscriptions). Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:05, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Whatamidoing (WMF): This is what I currently see at my Preferences with the Beta Feature off:
Also, now that we're at it, I'm not sure why but the reply link ain't working at wikt:lmo:Wikizzionari:Bar for some reason.
Best regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 21:11, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Reported the lmo.wiktionary issue to phab:T298830. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:38, 8 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like that's been fixed. mw:Help:DiscussionTools/Why can't I reply to this comment? has a list of the most common problems. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:05, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Enable WikiLove at Meta-Wiki[edit]

Hi, I am here to propose enabling WikiLove at Meta-Wiki. The reason is probably similar to other sites - give Meta-Wiki users a relatively friendly set of templates to improve the friendliness between users. The configuration could be similar to that on enwiki. Stang 23:27, 10 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No additional comments apart from the fact that this was already discussed at length and rejected before (cf. previous proposal, not sure about others). Best, Sgd. —Hasley 00:22, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Apologize for not making a search before post a new proposal here. Just wondering, why it is thought as "a toy" or "a game", is it just because Meta-Wiki is not a content-based site? Stang 01:39, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I would prefer that it went through an RfC than a request here, due to the previous conversation.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:48, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'd prefer not to enable it. My views have not changed since 2012. We now have a thanks feature, in addition to the old personalised talk page message of appreciation. Thanks. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:18, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No thanks, but agree that if this is wanted do a regular RfC. — xaosflux Talk 16:42, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Really isnt needed. You can use those templates without it being part of the interface. Vermont (talk) 19:23, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't is mostly useless templates that are in the WikiLove extension? I think it's only a enwiki thing, so no thanks. Stryn (talk) 08:20, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
WikiLove is available to all editors at about 50 public wikis, plus a few private and test wikis (specifically: arwiki, azwiki, bnwiki, bnwikisource, ckbwiki, commonswiki, testcommonswiki, enwiki, enwikivoyage, eswiki, eswikivoyage, fawiki, fawiktionary, hewiki, hewikiquote, hewikisource, hewiktionary, hiwiki, huwiki, hywiki, incubatorwiki, iswiki, itwikiquote, itwikivoyage, jawiki, kowiki, mediawikiwiki, mkwiki, mlwiki, newiki, nlwiki, nowiki, officewiki, outreachwiki, orwiki, pawiki, ptwiki, sawiki, sewikimedia, siwiki, slwiki, sqwiki, sqwikiquote, srwiki, svwiki, svwikinews, tawiki, testwiki, trwiki, ukwiki, urwiki, viwiki, wikitech, zhwiki, zhwikivoyage, zh_yuewiki). It began originally as a user script or gadget at the English Wikipedia, but it was converted to an extension and is now available to any wiki that requests it. Let's help Rehman[edit]

Hi all; let's support our colleague Rehman, he is a great Commoner and Wikipedian, and currently is in a critical economic situation. Here you can support; any donation and sharing this campaign is highly appreciated. Regards --A.Savin (talk) 02:10, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What can I do to contribute?[edit]

The subject is self explanatory. MobiusGehrig (talk) 02:11, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

On Meta-Wiki? There's a lot of helpful links for places you can contribute to on the Main Page, as well as currently ongoing discussions at Requests for comment. Vermont (talk) 01:05, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello all. I propose to make Meta:Bots into an official policy. This is a long-standing page and had little change since 2016. An inactivity policy was introduced and subsequently made into an official policy in 2019 so makes no sense to leave this out. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 11:20, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I support oficialising Meta:Bots and merging Meta:Bot inactivity policy into it so everything is consolidated in one place. However, I'd also take this oportunity to clarify when the inactivity checks for bots should be carried out. The policy mentions that they'll be "periodically reviewed" which is a bit vague. I think it'd be good to mention when that review can happen (e.g. on April 1st each year, so we can handle those with the admin inactivity checks). Thanks, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:53, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Minorax There is a previous discussion started by me here Meta:Babel/Archives/2020-11#Meta:Bots. I think there is a rough consensus there to make it a policy and merge the 2. @MarcoAurelio Can I do the merge now. Sorry I let the last discussion lapse. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 09:18, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Camouflaged Mirage: I feel I am bit involved, so I'll let other bureaucrats (@MF-Warburg & @Xaosflux) to decide. Thanks, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:05, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • This all seems fine, to make sure we are all on the same page - nothing is changing so far as actual community or operator expectations are involved, correct. Agree that in wrapping this up Meta:Bot inactivity policy should be merged in to Meta:Bots; the M-W bot policy still mostly pulls from the global Bot policy - but have to objections to tagging Meta:Bots as a policy page for the additional local policy rules that we have. — xaosflux Talk 11:49, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, i.e. Merging the inactivity page (i.e. copy-paste) to the main policy page, and redirecting the former to the latter. The main page will then be tagged as policy. No changes to the text whatsoever. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 12:31, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The Community Tech team is focused on tools for experienced Wikimedia editors. You can write proposals in any language, and we will translate them for you. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing your proposals! SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 18:10, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, if anyone could help start a translation (I am not translation administrator) for that page Community health initiative/User Mute features , it would be appreciable ! Bouzinac (talk) 21:56, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bouzinac, requests to mark pages for translation are made at Meta talk:Babylon. !Thanks Hulged (talk) 11:44, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The issue is that this page isn't set up for translation, hence, it cannot be marked up for translation now. Read Translation_requests#How_to_request_a_translation for further assistance. Thanks much. @Bouzinac Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 09:14, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've prepared the page for translation. * Pppery * it has begun 23:40, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Community Portal of Meta[edit]

Hello, when I tried to access Community Portal of Meta from Mobile site (aka, from the hamburger menu on the left, I get directed to Goings-on, instead of this oage which would appears to be a more typical place for meta-related community discussion to take place. I think such link is inconsistent with other wiki and make it harder for user to reach this place for meta-related discussion. I think this should be changed to link to this Meta:Babel page instead, anyone know how to achieve this? C933103 (talk) 12:07, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Meta Wiki Mobile Skin[edit]

Hello, when I visit Mobile version of Meta Wiki, the skin look like with 40% space on the left hand side of the page being blank. Is this intentional design choice and can the blank space be removed? C933103 (talk) 13:02, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@C933103: I cannot reproduce this. I think the problem is coming from your global.css code? Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 20:49, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes check.svg Resolved. @C933103 and Quiddity (WMF): Yes, the output is also due to the him custom CSS rule:
.mw-body {
	margin-left: 10em;
✍️ Dušan Kreheľ (talk) 21:21, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I see, so this is caused by the dark mode styling there. Is there ways to limit such styling to only desktop version skin, or alternative approaches to have a better implementation of dark mode? C933103 (talk) 02:15, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@C933103: This is not really a metawiki issue, you would be better to have the conversation at Mediawikiwiki mw:Help:Skins and talk pages. If you style into your special:mypage/global.css it will be global. Typically mobile uses the skin mw:Skin:Minerva Neue and you can style that through your preferences here. If you have issues with how the skins or the configuration options, then those requests belong in phabricator: tickets.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:59, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As the skin page talk page is apparently desolated, I'd just leave my last comment here for anyone reaching this section (or archive of this section) in the future through internet search. This is apparently successfully fixed by limiting the specific property to vector skin following instruction in mw:Help:Extension:GlobalCssJs by making use of CSS class selector. (Edit: The shifting is actually a bit different, but better than otherwise anyway) C933103 (talk) 13:18, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Desktop Improvements update and Office Hours invitation[edit]

Hello. I wanted to give you an update about the Desktop Improvements project, which the Wikimedia Foundation Web team has been working on for the past few years.

The goals of the project are to make the interface more welcoming and comfortable for readers and useful for advanced users. The project consists of a series of feature improvements which make it easier to read and learn, navigate within the page, search, switch between languages, use article tabs and the user menu, and more.

The improvements are already visible by default for readers and editors on 24 wikis, including Wikipedias in French, Portuguese, and Persian.

The changes apply to the Vector skin only. Monobook or Timeless users are not affected.

Features deployed since our last update[edit]

  • User menu - focused on making the navigation more intuitive by visually highlighting the structure of user links and their purpose.
  • Sticky header - focused on allowing access to important functionality (logging in/out, history, talk pages, etc.) without requiring people to scroll to the top of the page.

For a full list of the features the project includes, please visit our project page. We also invite you to our Updates page.

The features deployed already and the table of contents that's currently under development

How to enable the improvements[edit]

  • It is possible to opt-in individually in the appearance tab within the preferences by unchecking the "Use Legacy Vector" box. (It has to be empty.) Also, it is possible to opt-in on all wikis using the global preferences.
  • If you think this would be good as a default for all readers and editors of this wiki, feel free to start a conversation with the community and contact me.
  • On wikis where the changes are visible by default for all, logged-in users can always opt-out to the Legacy Vector. There is an easily accessible link in the sidebar of the new Vector.

Learn more and join our events[edit]

If you would like to follow the progress of our project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.

You can read the pages of the project, check our FAQ, write on the project talk page, and join an online meeting with us (27 January (Thursday), 15:00 UTC).

How to join our online meeting

Thank you!!
