Reasons to rename

If a person requests a new username, and that username is both available and doesn’t violate policy, will they automatically get it, regardless of reason? Anohthterwikipedian (talk) 20:26, 8 October 2025 (UTC)

All renames are done manually, so no: nothing is automatic. Renames are done at the discretion of the global renamers. Renames can be denied for multiple reasons, including too soon since last rename, or if in the new name is considered disruptive. Also, users that have any active locks or blocks will almost always be denied rename requests. If a rename request is denied by a renamer, it may be appealled at Steward_requests/Username_changes#Requests_involving_merges,_usurps_or_other_complications for larger discussion. — xaosflux ^Talk 00:11, 9 October 2025 (UTC)

Regarding User Permissions

Hello. Thank you for your efforts in editing. I have a few questions:

• Is the only user group with deletion rights on Meta-Wiki the administrators?
• Are there any permissions with few Japanese-speaking members?
• Is being a regular administrator a prerequisite for becoming a translation administrator?

2. no, I don't think so
3. no, any user can request the rights, but they need to show that they can prepare a page for translation with syntax, markups, etc.

Abuse filter messages that catch likely test edits should point users to the sandbox

MediaWiki:Abusefilter-warning should say:

About Template:Visibility

I believe this template was copy-pasted from Wikipedia which left multiple red links behind. I've restored the old links but I believe they should be updated to link to Meta wiki policies and talk pages instead of the ones on Wikipedia. I'm not really sure. @It's moon: It's fine for some of the links to lead to pages on Wikipedia and mediawikiwiki; Meta doesn't have many help pages and policies, and those that exist aren't as detailed as those on the aforementioned projects. Hello. What does the statement on the Translation Administrator page mean: “Before applying for translation administrator privileges, please practice the correct usage of translation syntax. When applying for translation administrator privileges, please attach an editing sample demonstrating practical experience using translation syntax”? I would appreciate a detailed explanation. • "Before applying for translation administrator privileges, please practice the correct usage of translation syntax" before Wikimedia contributors can get the 'translation administrator' permissions, they are advised to practice using the syntax for translations (similar to practicing wikitext or a programming language)
• "When applying for translation administrator privileges, please attach an editing sample demonstrating practical experience using translation syntax" Furthermore, proof that they practiced via an example of them editing to add translation syntax is required.
• Here you can see an example of how usage of translation syntax looks like.

Help needed to rename Lingua Libre/SignIt

Hello,

We would like to rename the page Lingua Libre/SignIt into SignIt. The project haven't been supported by Wikimedia France for the past 6 years and is fully carried forward by volunteers , myself and User:GonFreeaks. We are looking for a new WM Chapter or affiliate group to support this inspiring Sign Language project. The current pagename suggests, wrongly, that we are part of the WMFR-supported by Lingua Libre and therefor supported as well, which deters alternative affiliate from jumping in and giving us the occasional support we need. The page has multiple translations so I don't have the userrights to lead this renaming myself. Could some administrator help ? Yug (talk) 08:21, 26 October 2025 (UTC)

Request to review block

Hello, my IP address (185.213.230.115) has been indefinitely blocked on Uzbek Wikipedia by Nataev for "long-term abuse: multiple accounts". I believe this block is a misunderstanding. I was working in Turkey where more than 1000 people in a shared dormitory used the same Wi-Fi network. Please review this IP block. I am ready to edit responsibly from my personal account.
