Meta:Cite Unseen/Newsletter/2025-09-14

Hello! Thank you for using Cite Unseen. We are excited to share details about a big update we just deployed.
First: User:SuperGrey is joining User:SuperHamster as a maintainer (it is a coincidence that we both happen to have "super" in our usernames!).
With grant support from Wikimedia CH, we've added several new features:

- Source lists and categorizations now live on Meta-Wiki rather than GitHub, making them easier to view and collaboratively edit.
- Feel free to be bold and help expand the lists, but review the criteria on each list first. For debatable additions, use the suggestions page so others can weigh in.
- Changes to lists don't go live immediately, as Cite Unseen references specific rev IDs. This helps avoid issues of vandalism, and allows for changes to be reviewed before going live.
- Our sources lists also support date ranges, allowing us to handle sources whose nature or reliability has varied over time.
- A new filtering dashboard appears at the top of references sections, showing counts for each source category.

Category suggestion dialog - Click a category to display only those citations. This can be useful for exploring specific types of sources, and pinpointing potentially unreliable sources.
- You can disable the dashboard in the settings (more on configuring settings below).
- Cite Unseen now injects two links in References section headers:
- "Suggest Categories", which adds ⊕ icons next to citations. Click on one to open a dialog box that allows you to select recommended categories and leave a comment; your suggestion is posted to Meta-Wiki for review.
- "Cite Unseen Settings", which allows you to toggle the filtering dashboard and suggestion buttons mentioned above, and modify your custom domain or string categorizations.
- You can save your settings globally (Meta-Wiki, applies to all language Wikipedias) or locally (current language only).
- Internationalization is in progress. We currently have Chinese and Japanese translations; contributions of additional languages are welcome (see m:Meta:Cite_Unseen#Internationalization).
- Cite Unseen has been updated to better capture citations across more Wikimedia projects, including various language versions of Wikipedia.
- The user script is now hosted on Meta-Wiki, as part of our effort to internationalize and support various Wikimedia languages and projects. You can find our updated installation instructions here.
- To run Cite Unseen across all Wikimedia sites, you can import it into your Meta-Wiki global.js page.
- The English-Wikipedia script now redirects to the Meta-Wiki version, so no action is required to stay up to date (but it's probably a good idea to update your JS to point directly to the script on Meta-Wiki to avoid hitting the redirect.
We're continuing active development and expanding our source categorizations, especially for non-English sources. If you have feature ideas, notice any issues with our new updates, or have any questions, please get in touch via our project talk page.
Thanks,
