Meta:Historical/Style guide

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
Meta:Historical (style guide)
This page lays out guidelines and standards relevant to the Historical project.

Layout[edit]

Header[edit]

Every page should transclude the {{ header }} template at the top of the page. Category tags should be placed immediately following the template.

Parameters[edit]

  • title: the title of the containing work. If the page naming conventions are followed, this should be accomplished using relative links.
  • author: the name of the primary contributor. This is usually inapplicable and left empty.
  • section: The name of the current page.
  • previous/next: Links to preceding and following pages, where applicable.
  • notes: accept any notes about the page; usually describes historical context, et cetera.

Example[edit]

{{header
 | title = [[../]]
 | author =
 | section = (style guide)
 | previous =
 | next =
 | notes = This page lays out guidelines and standards relevant to the Historical project.
}}

Organisation[edit]

Naming conventions[edit]

  • Capitalisation: Sentence case is preferred, such that only the first letter of a page name is capitalised.
  • Subpages: All pages should be organised hierarchically, with one main page and several subpages, and linked together using relative links.

Examples[edit]

This table compares pagenames before and after integration into the historical project. Note that all subpages must use the same parent page. In the example below, all pages were grouped under "International logo content".

Previous name Standardised name
International logo contest International logo contest
International logo International logo contest/Discussion
International logos (overview) International logo contest/Overview
International logos (1-25) International logo contest/1-25
International logo vote/Ballot International logo contest/Ballot
International logo vote/Finalists International logo contest/Finalists
International logo vote International logo contest/Vote

Categorisation[edit]

All pages should be categorised to a subcategory of Category:Historical pages. Unimportant subpages should be categorised to the appropriate subpage category. This allows users to browse and maintain the project with much greater ease, especially when doing menial tasks that benefit from some degree of automation.
