Request for semiprotection

history of Talk:Abd

IP revert warring with me on my talk page. Please restore semiprotection, this is the Return of the Same Old Same Old. Thanks. --Abd (talk) 02:19, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

The IP was from Singapore, properly was I live in singapore. SA 13 Bro (talk) 02:22, 2 December 2017 (UTC)
Hmmm... I live in singapore (no edits so far) registered 01:43, 2 December 2017. First edit here of that IP is 01:56, 2 December 2017. I'd say probable. But the IP, though in Singapore, is an open proxy and the real user, from what I know, lives in England. That's not important here, the request is simply for semiprotection. I have already requested a global block for this IP. The local revert warring on two pages (my Talk page and this page) and with two registered users should be enough for a block here. --Abd (talk) 03:24, 2 December 2017 (UTC)
I've blocked the IP address. If they continue, I'll semi-protect your talk page. Matiia (talk) 03:32, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

Request for MassMessage sender's flag

Hi. I first wrote about this on Talk:MassMessage, but then I was tipped that maybe here is the right place to ask. May I please ask for MassMessage sender's right, needed for the delivery of the CEE Newsletter once a month (usually the first day of the month). Currently the list of subscribers is small enough, but this may also be due to the fact that the problem with the automated delivery has not been yet solved. I am aware how to use the tool, as I have used it as administrator both on Bulgarian Wikipedia and on Commons. And if this is (once again) not the right place to ask for this user right, I welcome any advice where is more appropriate to addess it. :) Spiritia 21:42, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

Thank you! :) Spiritia 22:11, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

Hide a personal inf.

Hello, can any Sysop on meta hide this revision on my namespace for privacy issues? 1 2 3 4 5 6 --Alaa :)..! 15:56, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

@علاء: Matiia have been done for you. SA 13 Bro (talk) 19:11, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
@علاء: It is better to email a steward rather than post it on a public page... btw. --Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 22:56, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
@Atcovi: Matiia is also a steward, he properly know how to handle the public page issue. SA 13 Bro (talk) 23:04, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

Automated archive

Is there a reason why my talk page doesn't automatically archive, what settings would I have to apply to make this happen? --Donald Trung (Talk 🤳🏻) (My global lock 🔒) (My global unlock 🔓) 13:52, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

@Donald Trung: On Meta-Wiki, most of the editors are usually self archive their talk page, I think you can request the bot archive from Steinsplitter. SA 13 Bro (talk) 01:22, 16 December 2017 (UTC)

MassMessage page for wikipassport project

Hi! Is it possible to create a delivery list with the MassMessage extension for useres who want to be involved and to stay up to date about the wikipassport project? For now the project page exists only in Italian (we have activated two GLAM institutions in Italy), but it could be translate in many languages because the project (hopefully) could go beyond the Italian borders. Thanks. --Yiyi (talk) 19:09, 16 December 2017 (UTC)

Request for patroller permission

Since it's becoming clear that I have to deal with vandalism here from time to time, I would like to request the patroller permission so I can revert edits quickly. Thanks in advance. -★- PlyrStar93. Message me. 01:50, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

Mass message failure

Greetings,

This morning, I tried to send a mass message to the pages listed at Wikimedia India/Community notification targets. I got the confirmation that message has successfully been sent. But if you check the pages, the message wasn't delivered. I sent again after the few hours, but again the same thing was repeated. Refer Special:Log/massmessage. Kindly help me out. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 10:32, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

Not guilty

Hello everybody ! I'm a new member of Wikimédia France staff, and I would like to edit our page to add a report. But I was identified as a spam and I can't publish. Help ! ^^ --Morlanne (talk) 15:02, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

Try now please. --Vituzzu (talk) 15:04, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
Wonderfull ! Thank you very much :) --Morlanne (talk) 15:06, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
I actually didn't anything, you solved it by yourself by doing your x-th edit ;)
--Vituzzu (talk) 15:07, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
That's what I thought ahah but thank you anyway !--Morlanne (talk) 15:13, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
@Morlanne: Frequently, staff members create parallel accounts to distinguish edit in a staff role and edits in a personal role. And staff-edit accounts normally carry something like "WM-FR" (in your case) as part of the title. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:51, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

Report concerning Theron Preston Washington

Theron Preston Washington (talk • contribs • deleted contribs • logs • filter log • block user • block log • GUC • CA)Reasons: The page en:Draft:Noble Party of Minnesota was deleted in en-wiki as G3 (Vandalism); the user since then created User:Theron Preston Washington in meta-wiki, despite it is short, it look like a DB-U5 (mis-use wikipedia as webhost) Matthew hk (talk) 18:08, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

This user is not very active potentially, if got any abuse on both Wikis, just simply report at SRG for the global lock. SA 13 Bro (talk) 20:23, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
Neither a block nor lock is required here. The user made a userpage on Meta that says "Noble party". No admin or steward action required at this point. – Ajraddatz (talk) 20:31, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
Agreed. Though [global] user pages should be related to users work on Wikimedia projects and not just nonsense. I don't know how "Noble party" is related to user's work on the Wikimedia projects. Also some users come to create their user page here after their user page is removed on another project, thus the global user page will be shown on the another project. And the case is same here, but the content is not exactly the same. Stryn (talk) 20:35, 20 December 2017 (UTC) Edited my comment. The enwiki user page was deleted in 2015. Stryn (talk) 20:44, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
All true, but we don't tend to get too fussy about something brief like that. If someday that should expand into a whole description of this "Noble party", it might be a different story. StevenJ81 (talk) 20:38, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
I don't seemed this user to be like abuse, don't know why Matthew hk want to post this concerning at here. SA 13 Bro (talk) 20:42, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

Whitelisting

Sorry to ask here, but Help desk, Help Desk, Meta:Help Desk, Meta:Help desk, Meta:HD, and Meta:Hd are all redlinks, and at least this is somewhat admin-related.

Where do I go to request whitelisting for a URL that should be available for use at one en:wp article? [Someone there who speaks regex told me to come here, since the link's affected by the global blacklist and not by the en:wp blacklist] Talk:Spam blacklist tells me about whitelisting but doesn't say anything about where to go, and Spam whitelist doesn't exist. Nyttend (talk) 11:47, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

PS, don't expect a response from me today; I'm about to be leaving on an 800km trip that includes a lot of windy little mountain roads. It's a little after 7AM here, and I may not be online again until late this evening or tomorrow morning. Nyttend (talk) 12:10, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

Isn't en:MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist working? Stryn (talk) 13:40, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
He might just not know about it. Adding the link to the local spam whitelist should work, or you could ask for the specific link to be removed at Talk:Spam blacklist. – Ajraddatz (talk) 18:40, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
So the en:wp whitelist can override the global blacklist? I assumed that a local whitelist could only override the local blacklist. Nyttend (talk) 04:43, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
@Nyttend: There is no global whitelist, only blacklisting, so all whitelisting needs to be done locally; and noting that you can do that with a regex that differs from the global. We can remove from spam blacklist if it warrants it. As a point of interest, local whitelisting and local blacklisting overrides anything global; (so global approvals do not override local disapprovals, eg. IPBE); no case of global approval overriding local springs to mind, though there may be something.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:18, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

Comment Comment the talk page for global blacklist does say in the last paragraph of the header

Thank you. I wasn't going to ask for it to be removed from the global list (it's only needed on one page on one project), so I'll use the whitelist with these bigger-than-I-expected powers. For that reason, I hadn't bothered looking at Talk:Spam blacklist. One case of global approval overriding local is user locking; otherwise Requests for comment/Global ban of INeverCry 2 wouldn't have gotten opposition from Russian users with rationales such as There are no violations in Russian Wikipedia, there is a positive contribution and technical flags. Nyttend (talk) 13:39, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
I was talking like-for-like technical functionality. Locks and blocks are different mechanisms, though I do agree that there are social situations where the global community overrides local; same things happen in development of mediawiki itself where certain communities drive the development and removal of the application.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:39, 22 December 2017 (UTC)

RFC closure

Hello. Requests for comment/Right changes for global OTRS members by OTRS admins is scheduled to end today. Please check if it can be closed. Thank you! --Krd 11:24, 23 December 2017 (UTC)

We don't usually schedule the closing of a RfC. Considering the topic of the RfC, I would like to see more users comment there before closing it, however, I won't object if another user closes it. Matiia (talk) 01:01, 24 December 2017 (UTC)

Request for closure

Would a sysop or bureaucrat assess the consensus at Requests_for_comment/Interlinking_of_accounts_involved_with_paid_editing_to_decrease_impersonation? The RFC has been open for almost 3 months. The closure was previously requested in October. Rentier (talk) 15:13, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

This RfC is cross-wiki, rather than Meta-specific. So probably any request for closure should go to the stewards (SRM). StevenJ81 (talk) 17:16, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, I posted the request at SRM. Rentier (talk) 00:12, 12 December 2017 (UTC)

And the stewards can't even agree whether it falls within their remit and nothing has been done. I find it disgraceful that a well-advertised RfC at a central location has not been closed after more than three months. So I'll give notice that if nobody else volunteers within the next day or so to close the RfC in a timely fashion, I will make the effort to read through all of the debate, including the talk page, and then I'll close it. --RexxS (talk) 21:00, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

  • If there isn't a closure of that discussion by January 1st then I will boldly volunteer to do a non-administrator close on it, possibly in consultation with RexxS who has also expressed a willingness to participate in closing that discussion. Although RexxS is free to work on that before January 1st on his/her own initiative. Regards, --Pine 20:44, 25 December 2017 (UTC)
The RfC was previously closed by a non-admin, but some people didn't agree with the closing rationale (and veiled their concerns by saying that they disagreed with a non-admin closure) and so the close was reverted. I would recommend that the previous close be re-implemented myself. – Ajraddatz (talk) 20:51, 25 December 2017 (UTC)
OK, thanks for noting that. I will take into consideration the discussion about the previous close, although I don't plan to use it as binding precedent. RexxS may think differently, and if he/she and I close this together then it's likely that we will include some discussion of the previous closure in our deliberations. --Pine 20:58, 25 December 2017 (UTC)

Protect Synchbot archives

The Synchbot archives are frequent targets for vandalism, and there's rarely a legitimate need for anonymous users to edit them. Two questions:

  • Can we change the protection level for all Synchbot archive pages to autoconfirmed?
  • If so, any objections if I set the protection levels for Synchbot archive pages myself? (Although I'm no longer a Meta administrator, I can protect pages as part of the global editinterface group.)

Pathoschild 18:29, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

@Pathoschild: I have implemented Special:Abusefilter/152 that will do that as needed. I have not got it in disallow mode yet as I just want to double check with live data. Having that way allows bots to edit it if required. We can go to more formal protection if that is preferred, though just needs that continued addition of protection for anything created, and I cannot say that I have poked my eyes into those pages for quite a while. Thanks for continuing that service to users.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:12, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
As a note, I took the (working) filter from flag to disallow in its actions.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:59, 1 January 2018 (UTC)
I won't object if Pathoschild protects his own stuff though. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 08:51, 2 January 2018 (UTC)
