Request for a global abuse filter/recurring JTD reference spam

Hi, could a global abuse filter be created for a recurring cross-wiki spam pattern?

The edits themselves do not otherwise seem to have much in common. The recurring part is only the inserted reference: a malformed citation containing a long list of URLs such as jtd.amegroups.com/article/view/7577/7006, .../7521/7007, .../7499/7008, etc., usually combined with Journal of Thoracic Disease and the DOI 10.21037/jtd.2016.04.14.

Examples: [1], [2], [3].

I would not suggest filtering the DOI alone, as it could be used legitimately, also blacklisting the domain doesn't seem appropriate. But adding many of these URLs in one reference appears very unlikely to be constructive. Would this be suitable for a global filter, perhaps first as log/tag or warning? Hey, I see you're active in edit filters. Would you be willing to add a global filter similar to Special:AbuseFilter/192 to help track phab:T287936. It'd be sufficient to look for </cite></ref> in new articles. Examples (of removal of the junk that was added by the translation tool): https://hr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Diff/7477238 or https://hr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Diff/7458283. I've checked about 20 random pages and found no false positives. They all had a "Content translation/V2" tag. You could probably use & !added_lines contains 'cx-segment' as an additional condition, since that's already covered by #192. Global Search only finds pages that haven't been fixed, so I thought a tracking filter would be more useful. We've been fixing ref errors like https://hr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Permalink/7458281?uselang=en for years. Running the filter for a few months should be enough to gauge the scale of the problem and help convince someone somewhere to take a look at this. pon_or (talk) 19:30, 8 June 2026 (UTC)

In my experience, it's pretty much every page creation using Content translation/V2. I do not know how many pages a day that is, but it should be similar to #192? Request for help due to stalking and hounding

Hello, I am contacting you regarding an edit war on my talk page. The rules of Meta and the Hebrew Wikipedia are different. As indicated by MediaWiki, I received the notice "You have a new message" with a red alert, but the message was not intended for me. It was addressed to ארז האורז. My talk page is not the appropriate place to address them. Therefore, I restored my talk page and provided a detailed and extended explanation.
Despite this, they again addressed and tagged the other user instead of me, doing an edit war. The Hebrew Wikipedia defines an edit war as a repetition of an edit that has been opposed. Both of them are administrators on the Hebrew Wikipedia and know very well what an edit war is.
My talk page is not the proper place for this, as it can be done elsewhere. It is stalking, hounding and intimidation: "By editing Meta-Wiki you agree to respect other users, be civil, respect basic etiquette rules and not make threats, stalk or personally attack any individual; and seek dispute resolution if you are not able to resolve your differences with other user".
Therefore, I ask that you delete their post on my talk page and block them from editing it. They may contact ארז האורז elsewhere, but not on my talk page. Thank you, 35 of May (talk) 05:16, 20 June 2026 (UTC)

@35 of May: I see that you have been blocked on hewiki by PurpleBuffalo, who is a CU there. It is often the case that the blocking admin participates in the appeal discussion to review or provide further information (at least, that's how Meta, enwiki and several other wikis operate; he:ויקיפדיה:מדיניות החסימה makes no mention of this). PurpleBuffalo's reply is relevant to the appeal and as such does not constitutes stalking or any other form of incivility. I would also argue that there has yet to be any edit warring, given that each side has only reverted once.

@PurpleBuffalo: 35 of May has requested you not to use their Meta talk page to contact ארז האורז. What do you say to that?

There are three sides of my appeal: me, Hebrew bureaucrat and the U4C. It is written here.

There was no CU on me. Therefore, the CU is not a side to my appeal, and I wrote it in my edit summary. Thus the CU did not reply to my appeal when I posted it 10 months ago, in August 2025. They also did not respond to my appeal notification on the U4C talk page. They reacted only when I tagged ארז האורז. Too late, and my talk page is not the room for applying ארז האורז by a fourth side, who has not responded in 2025. Can anybody request submitting a new "evidence" after the summaries have already been submitted 10 months ago? Please see also res judicata. Request for email rate limit increase the 2026 June edition of the Wikimedia Café

Hi @Xaosflux: the date is approaching for this month's Wikimedia Café. Similar to my request archived in here, please grant my account User:Pine the permission to use Special:EmailUser at higher than the normal rate limit, from 25 June through 29 June 00:01 AM UTC, so that I can email users who have registered to attend the upcoming Wikimedia Café session without being rate-limited. The allowance to bypass the EmailUser rate limit has been granted in the past by temporarily assigning my account the accountcreator permission. I believe that local admins on Meta can permanently assign the AccountCreator permission, and if that's true then I'd appreciate being assigned this permission on a longer-term basis such as until the end of 2026 to limit the frequency of my requests for this permission. I believe that I clicked something, or more than one thing, that caused the translation tool to take me to a different translation request, and I unknowingly edited on the page for the wrong request. Default block expiry for temporary accounts

@AramilFeraxa set MediaWiki:Ipb-default-expiry-temporary-account to 3 months in August 2025. Apparently, the decision was made based on plwiki's practice (which itself was based on a WMF employee's advice) and some stewards' preference at the time.

I would like to argue that TAs should be blocked indefinitely by default, per enwiki's practice. The primary reason is so that the block reason banner would remain even after the expiration of the account. Making blocks more visible would help with future inspections.

I think 3 months as a default is a good thing. You can select indefinite in the block menu fairly easily if that's what you actually intend to issue a block for, and I might argue that not everything necessarily needs an indefinite block. I'll grant, there are times and places where an indefinite block is warranted, though I'd argue that a week-long block suffices in many circumstances of simple vandalism and messing around, or even just tossing them out for the duration of the temp account. Since IP data is removed after 90 days, there is no reason to block for longer than that. IMO, it has no real purpose to have the block remaining. However, I've no strong feelings about it. -Barras talk 15:03, 2 July 2026 (UTC)

I think what Pppery suggests could be useful for historical purpose. For example, a temporary account that had a certain pattern can be associated with an LTA that used a blocked temporary account, and seeing that there is an active infinite block makes this search more immediate. Let's say you were checking an expired TA's edits on some small wiki without a community. Those edits weren't obviously disruptive, so you went on to check its CentralAuth. You saw that it had no edits on another wiki but was indefinitely blocked there by an admin for being a LTA and for triggering the filters with similar disruptive-yet-innocuous-looking edits. If that block had already expired, you would never have found the block entry and the filter hits. You would wrongly assume good faith and leave those edits there for all eternity, misleading future readers.

This is a real situation I have been in. Blocks do more than just preventing an account from performing actions. They carry information that might turn out to be extremely useful.
