Request mark for translation

Hello! I would like to request the translation markup for this page, considering the related pages and the header template. I appreciate the help. Vsdetoni (Projeto Mais+) (talk) 17:15, 30 January 2025 (UTC)

@Vsdetoni (Projeto Mais+) Done. FYI, we don't wrap entire content within a single pair of translate tags. signed, Aafi (talk) 17:27, 30 January 2025 (UTC)
Thank you, @Aafi! I added the translate tags as indicated in step 2 of this tutorial. Did I misunderstand something? Just to know for future cases. Vsdetoni (Projeto Mais+) (talk) 17:38, 30 January 2025 (UTC)
@Vsdetoni (Projeto Mais+): Yes. Markup differs. In case of a page which has only text-content with headings, the markup is fine but when you have a page that had a lot of non-text content (links/codes/tables/and other stuff), we need to make sure we do not put that huge bulk within the tags. Each textual string will need to be separated. You will need to use tvars in case of links in between, etcetera. Perhaps take a look at our Internationalization guidelines, for an easy understanding. signed, Aafi (talk) 17:25, 31 January 2025 (UTC)

Mark for translation-request

at Template:Rfc subpage, I tried to improve sorting. To make it work, the template might need to be marked for translation (even if that changes nothing visible). e 13:30, 22 January 2025 (UTC)

Done -- Pols12 (talk) 21:08, 2 February 2025 (UTC)

Is my markup correct?

I just have translated the Wikimedia Foundation/Advancement page to Ukrainian: Wikimedia Foundation/Advancement/uk.

The origin page includes the {{WMF Advancement Side Nav}} template.

I want to mark it up for translation. I've never done this before and my attempt of editing the original template was unsuccessful, so I made a copy at {{WMF Advancement Side Nav - test}}.

Please check if it is correct and help to finish making {{WMF Advancement Side Nav}} ready for translation. Thank you! Perohanych (talk) 15:06, 9 February 2025 (UTC)

Seems ok, but I would either include the complete markup (with asterisks and brackets) into the translate tags and use tvars to exclude the link, or only put the translatable text inside the tags. Personally, I prefer the latter, because there is no context needed for the translation of the text and therefore the link syntax can just be excluded. –MrBenjo (talk) 16:06, 9 February 2025 (UTC)
I have applied the following changes:
  • You first attempt was good, but the tvar’s were useless since they were not inside translate tags. Also, the tvar numbering should start at 1 again in each unit.
  • Since you’re linking sections, you can only target the anchor, skipping the page name. Else the full page will reload when you click on the link.
  • The language tag should be inside noinclude tag, else you will see the language bar in the transcluding page.
  • By the way, to make a second list level, we should use ** instead of :*. Colons should never be used to indent text, they mean “here is the description of the previous term” (the term is preceded with a semi-colon).
-- Pols12 (talk) 16:21, 10 February 2025 (UTC)
Thank you, Pols12. I tried to copy your template code from {{WMF Advancement Side Nav - test}} to {{WMF Advancement Side Nav}} but it does not work correctly at the Wikimedia Foundation/Advancement page and the language versions like: Wikimedia Foundation/Advancement/uk. Could you please help. --Perohanych (talk) 07:32, 13 February 2025 (UTC)
The next step is marking the page for translation. Only translation admins can perform it. I just have marked the template.
-- Pols12 (talk) 00:06, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
Thank you, Pols12! What should I do (or what should be done) to get the {{WMF Advancement Side Nav - test}} marked by translation admins? --Perohanych (talk) 15:34, 15 February 2025 (UTC)
A simple request on this page is sufficient. I can do it, but are you sure you want a test template to be translatable? Encouraging translators to spend time to translate an unused draft seems a bad idea.

Hi. I don't understand this. "Category:Celtic Knot Conference/ar" is already a subcategory of "Category:Celtic Knot Conference", which is a subcategory of "Category:WikiCons". So, the insertion of "WikiCons" as a category of the language versions of Celtic Knot Conference appears redundant and incorrect. --Superchilum(talk to me!) 13:53, 13 April 2025 (UTC)

Refrain from low priority changes: eg. do not→don't

How do we prevent such aesthetic touch-up? Does that nonsense belong to translators' task really?

What happened:

  1. somebody retouched on WMDE Technical Wishes/Sub-referencing segment_27, wisely tried to improve the sentence rewording _do not _ and _is not_ to don't_/ isn't.
  2. Translators watching pages they have worked on are prompted to update that revision.

What is wrong:

  1. no need to arrange aesthetic touch-up;
  2. as long as the system keeps the "revision needed" flag, unneeded touch up will be tested legitimate or a false justice, total waste of time.

How can we prevent: any idea appreciated.
Kindly be reminded, any retouch to translation original is not like tutoring writing assignment to 6th grader in your family.(;
--Omotecho (talk) 23:46, 9 June 2025 (UTC)

I agree, and I'd suggest we primarily need a few more clear and concise notes/reminders about Best Practices. -- I.e. The <translate> system is very complex, and those of us who use it daily or weekly know a lot of the tiny tips that make it work better for everyone, that might be easily forgotten (or never learned about) by people who only use it a few times each month or year.
E.g. Perhaps we could add a brief new section within mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Page translation example to cover invalidation? I noticed that page doesn't mention "invalidate" anywhere within. I suspect that is the main page that folks use to learn how to use the extension, and to remind-themselves of nuances if they've forgotten something. Then we could link people to that appropriate section in the docs when they forget (or never learned) a detail like this.
And/or we could expand the section within mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Page translation administration that covers invalidation, and add a distinct Heading/Anchor for it, and just link to that from the first page.
Re: the specific example you've mentioned, about contractions, I believe that is best covered by pages like mw:Documentation/Style guide (which says either are fine, and just "be consistent").
I hope these thoughts help. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 00:19, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
Agreed entirely with Quiddity; for relatively insignificant changes the "reqiure updates to the translations" checkbox should have been unchecked. Meta-Wiki has an unfortunate problem that it's chronically lacked altrustic translation admins clearing the backlog for everyone, meaning that more people are given translation admin permissions just to manage a small set of pages, and they have less experience and hence do a worse job. Now I'll admit I was an altruistic translation admin once, but lost interest in doing that several months ago in favor of other tasks, so I'm partly to blame. * Pppery * it has begun 00:54, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
Thanks for pointing this out @Omotecho and sorry for the unnecessary work this has caused for volunteers translating our sub-referencing project page. We try to avoid those minor changes or to make sure not to invalidate existing translations. I believe the specific change you mentioned happend due to a misunderstanding while I was on vacation. I'll make sure to improve our internal documentation on updating project pages & translations. I'm usually responsible for marking our page for translation and making sure to uncheck the "require updates to the translations" checkbox if translations don't need to be updated is of course a routine step in that process. Johannes Richter (WMDE) (talk) 10:53, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
Hello, @Johannes Richter (WMDE), you are so kind to see the situation from translators' view point, and I hope the very brilliant idea of sub-referencing would attract more translators, which in that light small loose ends like this one could eat into your energy to contribute to your community, and each of them be included in the benefit of sub-referencing, which means we make our wikis the best as it has been.
Now, I would like to convey much appreciation from jawp members who are more than happy to find this valuable feature: it matches to the wishes of those who care about reliability of our wikis, that is what I was told a few times from different users. Cheers, and arieger-tow, ありがとう (= Omotecho (talk) 12:05, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
For future reference if a change is marked for translation with the wrong invalidation settings you can revert it, mark the revert, and then mark the original changes again with the correct settings and that should work. It's probably too tangled now to be worth doing that, though. * Pppery * it has begun 17:04, 10 June 2025 (UTC)

@Assem Khidhr: The first two were already marked for translation, and now I marked the third one. The fourth one, however, is problematic: it looks like a table to be filled by contestants. Translation is best fit for mostly stable content; a page that’s edited several times a day will cause a lot of work to translation admins (and, depending on what changes, to translators) and still be constantly out of date. Would it be possible to separate the translatable parts from the often-changing ones, by moving either of them to another page (template, subpage etc.)? —Tacsipacsi (talk) 12:49, 29 June 2025 (UTC)

Formatting changes should be applied bots, not translators

Isn't upgrading general understanding of how the wikis work a basics to whoever touch wikis? Would anybody consider hands-on lessons to those human resource or service providers to the WMF?

Maybe you are not aware you put unnecessary loads to translators: or, I would appreciate very much if you tell me which part of the sample I put below needs knowledge or experience to convey ideas across languages?

Editing and bettering wikis needs you, but translation original pages are exceptional: Even a very minor things you change there will signals you need translators to help you.

Why? Because I am not a bot which is very precise at such mending. Such task is called "weeding", and at least I, on my editor side, am avoiding to work on such on other wikis IMHO, as I sometimes make mistake to match the number of =s (sample 2 below.)

Case sample:

(a) Plain formatting is not what translators are responsible for.

But as far as you edit the translation original, you are wasting times what translators needs to look up the change log and do silly jobs.
  1. tag marks; ibid;
  2. section title touch-ups, ibid;
    1. from ==section title==
    2. and add single spaces such == section title ==

Please give us volunteer tanslators respect and such formatting business are not what we spare our hours to. Cheers, Omotecho (talk) 11:21, 1 July 2025 (UTC)

If I understand correctly: For that example, looking at the latest log-entry and the 3 revisions that you've linked above, then what happened in this instance is: the translation admin @Ericliu1912 did not un-select the checkboxes for "Require updates to the translation" for a handful of the changed chunks that User:Eduardogobi had either improved or had simply made easier to read in the wikitext. E.g. It looks like T:14 and T:32 (among others) were invalidated (i.e. marked as requiring an update), when instead they should have been un-selected in order to minimize work for translators.
The documentation covering this aspect is briefly in the "Invalidation" point within mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Page translation administration#Invalidation (and further below in the section "Changing the source text"). It might be good to elaborate on some of that documentation. It is definitely helpful if all translation admins are familiar with how to make that decision for each chunk, and to try their best to minimize the work for translators.
[Of course, this becomes more complex when a sentence has just been slightly rewritten in the original language, but still contains the same core details - in those cases the translation-admin needs to make a subjective decision about whether the updates are significant enough to require re-translation.]
I'd suggest that usually the best method for communicating this type of reminder, is to post on the translation-admin's user-talkpage with a note pointing out some specific examples of which chunks they could have un-selected.
I hope these notes are helpful (for all!). Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 20:03, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
I have remarked the page in question for translation with more chunks selected as not needing updates. * Pppery * it has begun 05:48, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
Thank you, Pppery! Also, your method (of reverting to an older known-good version and then re-reverting) is very useful to [learn/be reminded] about! (I was imagining that I'd have to go through each language to 'confirm' each individual fuzzy translation, hence I hadn't attempted to fix it myself). So, thanks again. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 17:13, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
I actually wrote a series of patches to the Translate extension to allow that to work a few months ago out of sheer frustration at the fact that erroneous fuzzies took hundreds of times more effort to undo than to do. * Pppery * it has begun 17:29, 3 July 2025 (UTC)

Hi @Montemaria
I marked the page for translation, after adding all the necessary translation markup, and adding proper titles to the images (which should get more context IMO).
Don't forget that a translatable page should remain as stable as possible, as moving things around or editing sections will impact the volunteer translation work.
If you request translations, please keep in mind that we are all volunteers, with limited time and our own areas of contributions.

Thanks again for your kind support — it means a lot!

Refreshed version of Special:AggregateGroups

Greetings,

A new version of Special:AggregateGroups has been developed using Codex. It offers better performance with large number of aggregate groups, and improved mobile interface support. You can view the new interface here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:AggregateGroups?refresh=true

We will be making this the default version in the future. Please provide your feedback to improve the page.

Regards,

Abijeet Patro APatro (WMF) (talk) 14:22, 25 June 2025 (UTC)

Hello, we've made the codex version of Special:AggregateGroups the default. This change will ride out this week and you should see it across wikis where the Translate extension is installed. To access the old version please add the parameter ?refresh=0 as query string. Example: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:AggregateGroups?refresh=0
Unless there are any concerns raised, we will drop support for the old version in 2 weeks.

@APatro (WMF), hello,
Appreciate the functionality very much as a translator.
By the way, would you care and see to it that the doc page still lacks translation, the Usage section ?
Yes, the system shows 100% completed translation. But yes, markup is needed for one more part of it.
  • The {{Int string|1=}} appears, but the second half of that section needs translation as well.

Please refrain from adding "the" for grammar collection

Translators are wasted dealing with minor changes like adding the to sentences. It gives false-negative Update needed notices, but as far as I have seen, there were zero "the" that require boldfacing, but just for pure English grammar interest. How do we instruct ppl keen to correct grammars when they find grammatical errors on pages targeted for translation? Are they aware their good intention edits issue how much false-negative Update needed alarm not only to translators but non-English readers ?

  • adding the is a nonsense to languages as such defining grammar does not exist in their grammar; or
  • if you need "the" for emphasize, ja and other languages have to apply boldface or emphasizing parentheses instead.
How-tos?

Is anybody aware of the instruction page on updating Meta page, especially those with <languages /> or <translate> tags, opted in to internationalization? I have no idea whether "the" is added on VisualEditor or not; where on Mobile devices those tags are hard to identify, no?

  • Do we lack the warning some good intension correction put out unneeded notices to non-English language users, or
  • why not imagine as if non-English page readers are given false impression, they are offered down-graded contents not mirroring its sister page in English?
Solution?

Do we run bots or any automated measure to keep the-adding habits away from "Update need" notices, or since it is the beginning of Fy2025-2026, I am afraid there will be many delicious targets to the grammar watchers.

Statistics?

Or take a toll why figures of "Update needed" has inflated recently.

It squeezes my guts that the notices includes so much false-positive recently due to "the" hunting. Omotecho (talk) 05:14, 14 September 2025 (UTC)

We shouldn’t “instruct ppl keen to correct grammars”. What we need is translation admins unchecking Require updates to the translation in case of such changes when they mark the page for translation. If it’s unchecked, all that happens is that a diff is shown when one tries to translate that unit – no pink background, no Outdated tag on the translation interface. With this, the English text is fixed but translators get no extra work. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:40, 27 October 2025 (UTC)

What should happen with Chinese translations? Translations into zh-hans and zh-hant are disabled, so they need to be merged into one zh translation somehow. Being fifteen to twenty years old, even the page structure diverged between the two variants. Without speaking Chinese (or any East Asian languages), I have no idea what to do. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:49, 27 October 2025 (UTC)
They need to be merged content-wise, and for that we would need some help from Chinese speakers. Character conversion will then be done automatically, as with Stewards/zh, for example. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 22:33, 27 October 2025 (UTC)

Request for translation.

Dear Meta translator community. Can you please mark the pages within the project for translation? I'd like to enable communities involved in the initiative to read in their mother languages. Thank you in advance. Best wishes, Małgorzata Gramatnikowska (WMPL) (talk) 13:00, 3 November 2025 (UTC)

Would a translator like me be welcome?

I'm not particularly skilled at reading, writing, or speaking English, so I always use machine translation to create my own translations. Most translators probably write English very well, read it fluently, and speak it fluently. In that context, would a translator like me, who relies on machine translation, be welcome here? I want to know. I'd be happy to receive plenty of welcoming comments as well as critical opinions. Please share your thoughts. ℍ𝕕𝕚𝕒𝕝𝕜 (𝕥𝕒𝕝𝕜) 08:22, 17 November 2025 (UTC)

Portuguese language

Dear Sirs, The websites from wikis Wikimedia and translatewiki.net in Portuguese isn't almost in Portuguese at all. It is in Portuguese (Brazil) that is not the same. The Portuguese (Brazil) doesn't represent the Portuguese language is the other way around. The Portuguese language is represented by the Portuguese (Portugal) only. Why no one help and ignore the Portuguese language?! And why the Brazilians are saying to the Portuguese translators that some of the translations have years and that they should not be fixed?! It is more than wrong this attitude and does not follow the guidelines of the Wikimedia. Hope that someone could from Portuguese community could help. I can carry on helping more within the Portuguese language and bring it to the way it should be. I am a Portuguese native and translator since 1984 by education and help Mozilla within the SUMO translations, Weblate proofreader, Mattermost proofreader, and with more than 20 years of experience in software translation. Thank you so much for your time. Kind regards Man Sil (talk) 15:19, 4 December 2025 (UTC)

We can't speak to what is on translatewiki here, you should follow up any questions about that project over there. However, there are a couple of related things on our projects:
  • We do support both Portugese (pt) and Portuguese (Brazilian) (pt-BR) in our interface, however we are dependent on those existing upstream.
  • We do not have different dialect-specific projects such as The Portuguese Wikipedia and The Portuguese (Brazilian) Wikipedia. Just as we do not have different Wikipedias for English, English-GB, English-CA, English-AU, and English-IN. In general, our base-language projects welcome all dialects, usually with guidelines to not mix dialects on the same page in a way that may confuse readers. For ptwiki, see their guidance here: w:pt:Wikipédia:Livro de estilo#Versões da língua portuguesa.
  • Rarely will a project split over dialect, but it is possible (e.g. zhwiki and zh-yuewiki). This would require that a sufficient community of dialect-specific volunteers are ready to run the project.
As far as LOCAL pt translations go, the scope of this page - users should not be edit warring over regional dialects in our translations. In general, whoever translates a page first can pick; ideally the entire page should use a consistent dialect. Keep in mind, that most users will NOT have their language set to pt-BR, so the general expectation is that the translations are in to pt.
Is there a specific problem you are running in to? — xaosflux Talk 14:19, 8 December 2025 (UTC)
I know that the Wikipedia has only the PT language but I do not participate in there as the PT is almost pt-BR language that is wrong but is a thing that I will not fight because is a waist of time as other Portuguese users tried and failed. The text in the link above is pt-BR text.
And as you can see here from https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Requests_for_new_languages/Wikipedia_European_Portuguese:
The Portuguese Wiki is (at least for me) an unacceptable medium in which I cannot freely write and edit! The Brazilians aggressively dominate the Wiki and have imposed their standards on european portuguese speakers. I believe it is time for each to go his way so that both sides are free to write the way they consider to be most correct. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 193.137.112.6 (talk • contribs).
And in https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Portal:Pt it is almost the same. We translate and fix the PT language and the Brazilians colleagues revert them again to the ones with pt-BR terms. WRONG
And no one sort this unfortunately.
But in the Wikimedia wikis where exist the PT language the most have pt-BR terms and it is wrong that. :(
I have been trying to update them but sometimes some are reverted to the ones with the pt-Br terms.
I know that we have only a few people within the Portuguese language and almost none helping with the translations as we need too much time to do it and revise them.
I am available now as I have time to do it.
But to have someone reverting the translations/corrections is a waste of our time. :(

Please note that this page is dedicated to discussions about translations-related issues here on Meta-Wiki. Are you having an issue related to on-wiki translation here on our project? — xaosflux Talk 14:55, 8 December 2025 (UTC)
The only problem that I found here is our Brazilians colleagues do not respect the translations in pt.
And if I am not wrong about what I have read they aren't respecting the guidelines da Wikimedia.
The pt language SHOULD HAVE ONLY Portuguese (Portugal) terms as exist the pt variants na Wikimedia.
Thank you for tour time.

WikiTutur : help needed to set up translation page(s)

See WikiTutur, {{WikiTutur portal navigation}}, {{ll}}.

Hello All,

The WikiTutur project page needs help to set up translation. While this project's leaders report on this meta page in English, this "portal" content is not available in the common Indonesian language of the very communities who contributes to this project. Help therefore much welcome. Yug (talk) 10:47, 23 November 2025 (UTC)
