Description

Algeria in Text is a digitization and transcription project dedicated to enriching Wikimedia platforms with historical, cultural, and literary works related to Algeria, in both Arabic and French.

The initiative focuses on locating, scanning, or sourcing public domain books—either from physical archives or freely accessible online collections—and publishing their content on Wikisource.

The primary aim is to make Algeria’s printed heritage more accessible, searchable, and reusable through open knowledge platforms.

Objectives and Scope

• Digitize and transcribe 10,000 pages of books related to Algeria on Wikisource (Arabic and French)
• Upload approximately 1,000 relevant images or scanned pages to Wikimedia Commons
• Create and enrich around 500 Wikidata items for books, authors, and institutions involved

Methodology

1. Book Identification and Curation

• Select titles based on relevance to Algerian history, culture, literature, geography, and governance
• Verify public domain status and licensing

2. Scanning and Processing

• Scan physical copies when necessary or download public domain versions
• Organize and clean page images for upload

3. Transcription and Proofreading on Wikisource

• Upload the texts to Arabic and French Wikisource
• Transcribe and proofread using standard Wikisource practices

4. Metadata and Integration

• Upload illustrations and book covers to Commons
• Link works and authors to Wikidata, creating structured entries for each
