Description
[edit]The University of Hamburg holds around 2,000 undigitized Arabic manuscripts in its library. These valuable cultural assets remain inaccessible to the wider public. This project aims to make a selection of the most significant manuscripts freely available through Wikimedia platforms. The process includes:
- Selecting high-priority manuscripts based on historical and research value;
- Scanning and uploading the digitized files to Wikimedia Commons;
- Creating structured metadata for each manuscript in Wikidata and linking them to the Commons files;
- Making the files ready for transcription in the Arabic Wikisource.
The pilot phase will last 3 months and include 20 hours of work per week, mainly dedicated to digitization, uploading, and metadata curation. If successful, the project can be extended.
