Description

The Visual Jordan Archive project proposes a targeted photography expedition across selected remote and under-documented regions of Jordan. The primary objective is to expand and improve the quality of visual content available on Wikimedia Commons by contributing reliable, well-documented, and openly licensed images that address current content gaps.

The project will prioritize locations and subjects that are currently underrepresented, including rural landscapes, lesser-documented heritage sites, and community environments. In parallel, it will produce a curated visual record of museum collections that preserve significant archaeological discoveries from across Jordan, contributing to broader public access to cultural heritage.

Fieldwork will also document natural and environmental features such as rare plant species, wildlife, notable mountain formations, seasonal water flows, and dams. Cultural elements—including places of worship, traditional attire, and local cuisine—will be photographed in a manner that supports accurate and respectful representation of intangible heritage.

An additional outcome of the project is the updating of outdated images currently hosted on Wikimedia Commons, enabling temporal comparison and supporting documentation of environmental and developmental changes.

The Department of Antiquities of Jordan has provided institutional support by issuing a proposed itinerary and official authorization, facilitating access to selected restricted sites and permitting photography within museum collections. A dedicated digital mapping application has also been made available to support efficient navigation across archaeological, natural, and cultural locations included in the project scope.

The project will adhere strictly to the policies and guidelines of the Wikimedia Foundation, as well as applicable laws and regulations in Jordan, ensuring ethical, legal, and community-aligned documentation practices.
