Description

The project “Digital Memory of Tunisia: Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives” is a one-month Wikimedia GLAM initiative carried out in collaboration with the National Archives of Tunisia. It will be implemented by a team of four experienced Tunisian Wikimedians, aiming to share historical documents in the public domain and promote free access to knowledge about Tunisia’s heritage. The project begins with a preparation phase, during which the team will work closely with archivists to identify and select materials dated before 1984, ensuring their eligibility for open access. The selected documents will include newspapers (providing valuable photos and references), photographs of historical Tunisian personalities, and a selection of manuscripts. This phase will also include organizing materials and defining metadata standards. The second phase consists of a one-month residency at the archives, where the team will collect and photograph the selected materials. In the final phase, the materials will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons with proper descriptions and categorization. These resources will then be integrated into Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects to enrich content with reliable primary sources and contribute to preserving Tunisia’s documentary heritage for future generations.

This project builds on a similar initiative carried out in 2017, which contributed a significant number of valuable documents to Wikimedia platforms. However, no follow-up phase was organized due to the considerable time, logistics, and coordination required with the National Archives.
