Candidates for the Nigeria National Funding Program Committee

Fulani215

  • Which Nigerian state are you based in?
    • Jigawa State
  • Tell us about yourself and why you want to join the NNFP Committee.
    • My name is Abdulkadir Abdulkadir User: Fulani215 I’m Wikimedia community organizer and advocate for knowledge equity, with a strong focus on minority and indigenous language representation in Nigeria. My work within the Wikimedia movement is centered on empowering underrepresented communities to document and share their knowledge, history, and culture using open platforms.

I am an active organizer within the Fulfulde Wikimedia Community User Group, where I have supported editor training, content creation, and community engagement activities aimed at improving the visibility of Fulfulde language, culture, and heritage on Wikimedia projects. Through edit-a-thons, workshops, and mentorship, I have contributed to the creation and improvement of articles covering Fulfulde history, oral traditions, notable personalities, and local geographies that were previously missing or underdeveloped. In addition, I am involved with Wiki for Minorities, a pan-African initiative focused on addressing systemic gaps affecting minority and underrepresented communities in the Wikimedia movement. Through this work, I have supported cross-community coordination, surveys, and inclusive participation strategies. My recently concluded project under this initiative focused on expanding the visibility of minority languages across the 19 states of Northern Nigeria, resulting in the creation of over 400 new articles and the improvement of more than 650 existing articles related to African minority languages and cultures. In recognition of my work, I received the Nigeria Best Indigenous Language Award 2025 in Lagos, which acknowledges my contributions to promoting indigenous language content and community participation on open knowledge platforms. This recognition reflects both the impact of my work and my commitment to sustainable community driven initiatives.

I am seeking to join the Nigeria National Funding Program Committee, because I bring practical, grassroots experience and a deep understanding of the needs and challenges faced by Nigerian Wikimedia communities, particularly those working in indigenous and minority language contexts. My experience positions me to contribute meaningfully to proposal assessment, equitable funding decisions, and community support processes. As a committee member, I would uphold principles of transparency, fairness, and impact driven in decision-making, ensuring that funded projects align with community priorities and the Wikimedia Movement Strategy 2030, especially its focus on language diversity and knowledge equity. Joining the committee is an opportunity for me to support sustainable growth, amplify underrepresented voices, and help strengthen the Nigerian Wikimedia ecosystem.

    • What is your current participation in the Wikimedia movement or the Free Knowledge Ecosystem?
    • I am currently an active Wikimedia community organizer, contributor, and coordinator, with practical experience supporting community led projects, indigenous language initiatives, and inclusive participation across Nigeria. My participation in the Wikimedia movement is strongly grounded in grassroots engagement, collaboration, and sustainability that are key areas relevant to the work of the Nigeria National Program Committee. Within the Fulfulde Wikimedia Community, I am actively involved in editor onboarding, training, mentorship, and content development, with a focus on improving the quality and coverage of Fulfulde language, culture, history, and notable personalities on Wikimedia platforms. I regularly support edit-a-thons, workshops, and follow-up mentoring, helping contributors understand Wikimedia policies, quality standards, and community norms. This role has given me direct insight into the operational realities, challenges, and resource needs of local communities seeking funding support.

I am also actively engaged with Wiki for Minorities, a pan-African initiative addressing systemic gaps affecting underrepresented communities in the free knowledge ecosystem. My current participation includes community coordination, cross-country collaboration, survey design and analysis, and inclusive engagement strategies, particularly for minority language communities and women. Through this work, I have contributed to a recently concluded project focused on expanding the visibility of minority languages across the 19 states of Northern Nigeria, which resulted in significant content creation and improvement related to indigenous languages. Beyond content work, I participate in community discussions around sustainability, governance, and equitable access to funding, engaging with organizers and contributors to identify barriers, risks, and opportunities for long-term impact. I also support local partnerships with cultural and language groups, helping them understand how Wikimedia projects and funding mechanisms can support their goals.

My current participation aligns closely with the responsibilities of the Nigeria National Funding Program Committee, particularly in assessing community needs, understanding grassroots contexts, supporting equitable funding decisions, and promoting transparency and impact driven outcomes. I bring a contributor-centered perspective that values fairness, inclusivity, and sustainability, in line with the Wikimedia Movement Strategy 2030 and Nigeria’s local priorities.

    • How do you think you could contribute to the committee's role and ways of working?
    • I would contribute to the Nigeria National Funding Program Committee by bringing a strong grassroots perspective, practical program experience, and a commitment to fair, transparent, and impact driven in decision-making. My active involvement in community led Wikimedia initiatives, particularly in indigenous and minority language contexts, positions me to assess proposals with a clear understanding of local realities and community needs.

Firstly, I would support the committee’s role in equitable proposal review by applying consistent evaluation criteria while remaining sensitive to contextual differences across Nigerian communities. Having worked closely with emerging and under-resourced communities, I understand common challenges such as limited capacity, language barriers, and sustainability risks. This enables me to distinguish between proposals that need refinement and those that may require additional mentorship rather than rejection.

Secondly, I would contribute to improve proposal quality and community readiness by supporting constructive feedback processes. Drawing from my experience mentoring contributors and organizers, I can help identify gaps in planning, budgeting, risk management, and measurement of impact, and provide clear, practical recommendations that strengthen proposals and increase their chances of success.

Thirdly, I would actively promote transparency, accountability, and compliance in the committee’s ways of working. I value clear documentation, conflict-of-interest management, and evidence-based in decision-making, ensuring that funding decisions are fair, traceable, and aligned with both national priorities and Wikimedia Foundation guidelines. In addition, I would support the committee’s collaborative and learning oriented culture by engaging openly with fellow committee members, respecting diverse perspectives, and contributing to continuous improvement of review processes. My experience working with cross country teams has strengthened my ability to collaborate effectively, communicate clearly, and resolve differences constructively.

Finally, I would help to ensure that funded programs align with the Wikimedia Movement Strategy 2030, particularly in advancing knowledge equity, language diversity, and community sustainability. I would advocate for initiatives that empower local leaders, build long-term capacity, and create measurable impact beyond short-term outputs. In conclusion, I would contribute to the Nigeria National Funding Program Committee by strengthening its decision-making quality, community relevance, and trustworthiness, ensuring that funding supports inclusive, sustainability and high-impact Wikimedia initiatives across Nigeria.

    • How do you think the committee could make decision-making more participatory?
    • The Committee can make decision-making more participatory by strengthening structured community engagement, transparency, and feedback mechanisms throughout the funding cycle, while maintaining clear governance and accountability standards.

First of all, the committee should expand early stage community consultation by organizing open information sessions, office hours, or community calls before proposal deadlines. These spaces would allow community members, especially the underrepresented groups to ask questions, clarify expectations, and better understand funding priorities. This approach reduces information gaps and enables more equitable participation across regions and language communities.

Secondly, participatory in decision-making can be enhanced through clear and accessible communication. Publishing simplified guidelines, evaluation criteria, and timelines in formats that are easy to understand and where possible, supporting multilingual communication would help demystify the process and encourage broader community engagement, particularly from indigenous and minority language communities.

Thirdly, the committee could integrate structured community feedback mechanisms into the review process. This could include anonymized summaries of common proposal strengths and weaknesses, post-decision feedback to applicants, and periodic community surveys to assess perceptions of fairness, accessibility, and impact. Such feedback loops would allow communities to feel heard and help the committee continuously improve its processes. In addition, the committee could promote peer learning and co-creation by supporting mentorship or proposal-clinic models, where experienced organizers guide newer applicants in developing strong, realistic proposals. This participatory approach builds capacity while ensuring that funding decisions are based on well prepared submissions rather than unequal access to experience. In conclusion, fostering a culture of inclusion within the committee itself by valuing diverse regional, linguistic, and community perspectives during deliberations, this can strengthen collective decision-making. Encouraging respectful dialogue, documenting differing viewpoints, and basing final decisions on shared criteria helps balance participation with efficiency. By combining open communication, structured feedback, mentorship, and inclusive internal practices, the Nigeria National Fund Program Committee can make its decision-making more participatory while maintaining transparency, fairness, and alignment with the Wikimedia Movement Strategy 2030.

    • How do you think the committee could improve grantmaking so it has a greater impact?
    • The Nigeria National Funding Program Committee can improve grant making impact by strengthening strategic alignment, capacity building, monitoring, and learning, while remaining responsive to Nigeria’s diverse community contexts.

Firstly, the committee could prioritize impact focused on proposal design by encouraging applicants to clearly link activities to outcomes and long term community benefits. Emphasizing realistic goals, clear indicators of success, and sustainability plans, such as contributor retention, partnerships, and community leadership development would help to ensure that funded projects create value beyond short-term outputs.

Secondly, strengthening capacity support alongside funding would significantly increase impact. Many promising initiatives, especially from emerging or underrepresented communities, require mentorship in areas such as program design, budgeting, risk management, and reporting. Introducing proposal clinics, peer mentorship, or light touch coaching before and during implementation would improve delivery quality and reduce common challenges face by the applicant

Thirdly, the committee could enhance monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) practices by focusing on both quantitative and qualitative impact. In addition to tracking metrics such as content creation or participation, the committee could encourage grantees to document lessons learned, community growth, and sustainability outcomes. Periodic learning sessions where grantees share experiences would help scale successful models across Nigeria. In addition, the committee could improve impact by supporting strategic partnerships and collaboration. Encouraging proposals that involve collaborations between communities, affiliates, educational institutions, or cultural organizations can amplify reach, reduce duplication of efforts and strengthen long-term impact. Priority could be given to projects that demonstrate strong local partnerships and community ownership. Finally, the committee could adopt a portfolio based approach to funding, balancing support for established communities with investments in emerging and underrepresented groups, particularly indigenous language communities. This approach ensures equity while maintaining overall program effectiveness. In conclusion, adding all the strategic focus, capacity building, strong learning practices, and equitable investment, the Nigeria National Fund Program Committee can maximize the impact of its grant-making while advancing the Wikimedia Movement Strategy 2030 and strengthening Nigeria’s free knowledge ecosystem.

    • How can the committee influence the grantmaking process to have a greater impact?
    • The Committee can influence the grant-making process to achieve greater impact by playing a proactive role in strategic direction setting, quality assurance, learning, and community alignment, while upholding transparency and accountability. the committee can also shape impact by clarifying and communicating funding priorities that respond to Nigeria’s community needs and align with the Wikimedia Movement Strategy 2030. By clearly signaling focusing areas such as indigenous language growth, community sustainability, contributors retention, and partnerships that can help applicants design proposals that are more strategic and impactful. Moreover, the committee can influence quality through rigorous but supportive proposal assessment. Applying consistent evaluation criteria, asking critical questions about outcomes, risks, and sustainability, and encouraging realistic scopes ensures that funded projects are achievable and aligned with long term goals. Where appropriate, the committee can recommend revisions or conditional approvals to strengthen promising proposals rather than excluding them.

Furthermore, the committee can increase impact by embedding capacity building into the grant-making process. Supporting mechanisms such as proposal clinics, mentorship, or peer review either before or during funding which can help grantees improve program design, financial planning, and reporting, leading to stronger implementation and better outcomes. In addition, the committee can influence impact through active monitoring and learning. By reviewing progress reports with an emphasis on learning rather than compliance alone, the committee can identify emerging challenges early and support adaptive changes. Facilitating learning exchanges among grantees allows successful approaches to be shared and scaled across communities. Finally, the committee can build trust and long-term impact by maintaining transparent communication and feedback loops. Providing clear explanations for decisions and constructive feedback to applicants which will increases community confidence and improves future proposals, Through strategic guidance, supportive evaluation, learning-oriented oversight, and equitable investment, the Nigeria National Funding Program Committee can significantly enhance the impact of its grant-making and strengthen the Wikimedia movement in Nigeria.

    • What skills, background, or experience could you bring to the committee?
    • I will bring my combination of hands of administrator and outreach and event planner coordinator fulfulde Wikimedia community experience, leadership in minority language initiatives, and practical knowledge of monthly stipend and project implementation, which aligns directly with the responsibilities of the Committee starting from Grassroots community engagement that possess an extensive experience working with the Fulfulde Wikimedia Community User Group, coordinating editor onboarding, content creation, mentorship, and workshops. This experience provides me with firsthand understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by Nigerian communities, especially underrepresented and indigenous language groups. It equips me to assess proposals with sensitivity to local context and community needs.

Secondly, My Leadership in minority language initiatives, through my work with Wiki for Minorities, I have coordinated projects across multiple African countries, supported cross-community collaboration, and contributed to projects that created over 400 new articles and improved more than 650 articles on African minority languages. I also received the Nigeria Best Indigenous Language Award 2025 in recognition of my contributions. This experience gives me insight into the types of initiatives that have sustainable, measurable impact. thirdly, My experience in Project assessment and mentorship, I have experience reviewing community projects, providing constructive feedback, and supporting capacity building for emerging contributors. This allows me to identify realistic objectives, feasible budgets, and potential risks in proposals, helping the committee make informed and impactful funding decisions. Thirdly, My commitment to equity, inclusion, and sustainability, my work emphasizes empowering marginalized groups, including women and minority language communities. I can contribute to ensuring that grant-making decisions promote equitable participation, long-term capacity building, and alignment with the Wikimedia Movement Strategy 2030, particularly in areas of knowledge equity and language diversity. Furthermore, my Collaborative and Administrative skills, I have facilitated cross-community projects, coordinated multi-stakeholder initiatives, and participated in strategic planning processes. I am skilled in constructive deliberation, transparent decision-making, and maintaining accountability that are critical for effective committee operations.

In summary, combination of my practical Wikimedia experience, leadership in minority and indigenous language initiatives, mentorship skills, and Administrative knowledge positions me to contribute effectively to the Committee to ensure that grant-making is equitable, strategic, and high-impact for the benefit of all.

    • How would you ensure equity in allocating funding to diverse communities?
    • Ensuring equity and transparency in funding allocation requires a combination of structured assessment, inclusive engagement, transparency, and contextual understanding. If was selected i am eager serve with the Committee, I would approach this through the following strategies:
  1. Context sensitive proposal review: I would ensure that proposals are evaluated with attention to the specific challenges faced by different communities, particularly underrepresented, indigenous, and minority language groups. This may involves consideration of local resource limitations, access barriers, and capacity differences, rather than relying solely on uniform metrics.
  2. Inclusive outreach and support: Equity begins before proposals are submitted. I would advocate for accessible communication and guidance, such as proposal clinics, mentorship, and multi language support considering Nigeria as the African multilingual nation to enable emerging or marginalized communities to compete fairly for funding.
  3. Transparent and evidence based decision-making: Decisions should be well documented, clearly justified, and communicated. By providing constructive facta feed back and explaining criteria openly, the committee can build trust and ensure that communities understand how funding decisions are made which reduce potential biases.
  4. Balanced portfolio approach: I would support a balanced allocation strategy that ensures both established and emerging communities receive support. Priority should be given to initiatives that demonstrate community ownership, sustainability, and potential for long-term impact, without disadvantaging smaller or less resourced groups.
  5. Continuous in learning and monitoring: Equity also requires ongoing review. I would contribute to monitoring funded projects, collecting community feedback, and learning from outcomes to adjust funding strategies in future cycles. This iterative approach ensures that equity goals are met over time, not just at the point of allocation.

Using standardized in scoring which will help to minimize bias and ensures consistency across diverse communities. I will also Structure and documented a deliberation to all committee discussions and decisions to be well-documented, including rationale for funding recommendations. This documentation will ensures accountability, provides a reference for future decisions, and allows community members to understand how choices were made. Furthermore Inclusive and evidence based review, I would advocate for decisions to be based on evidence from proposals, community context, and past outcomes, rather than personal preferences or assumptions. Engaging multiple committee members in review and discussion will help to ensure fairness and diverse perspectives that can be consider. Lastly Open communication with applicants and communities, Transparency requires that applicants receive constructive feedback, clear explanations for decisions, and guidance on areas for improvement. This builds trust, strengthens future proposals, and demonstrates that all communities are treated equitably. In addition I will also support Monitoring and reflection to identify areas for improvement, address unintended biases, and ensure equitable treatment across regions, languages, and community types.

I am the founder and project manager of the Speak Ekpeye Fluently Language Initiative, a non-profit organization focused on revitalizing and documenting the Ekpeye language through digital education, storytelling, and community engagement.

I want to join the NNFP Committee because I have firsthand experience designing, implementing, and managing community projects that rely on small to medium-scale funding. I understand both the opportunities and the challenges faced by applicants, particularly those working in underrepresented language and cultural communities. Serving on the committee would allow me to contribute to a fair, transparent, and impact-driven grantmaking process that strengthens Wikimedia communities across Nigeria.

  • What is your current participation in the Wikimedia movement or the Free Knowledge Ecosystem?
    • I am actively involved in the Wikimedia movement at both local and national levels. I have volunteered with the Wikimedia Nigeria Delta Community (a regroup under Wikimedia User Group Nigeria) as a Community Mobilization Officer, supporting outreach, engagement, and participation at the grassroots level.

Currently, I am based in Abuja, where I volunteer as the Vice President of the Abuja Network, contributing to community coordination, planning, and engagement activities.

    • How do you think you could contribute to the committee's role and ways of working?
    • Having previously served as a volunteer reviewer for two Grant review committee cycles, I am familiar with the funding review workflows, evaluation criteria, and collaborative decision-making processes. I can contribute by conducting careful and fair proposal reviews, offering constructive feedback to applicants, and supporting transparent documentation of decisions.

My background in community mobilization and language advocacy also enables me to assess proposals with sensitivity to local context, especially for emerging communities, first-time applicants, and language-focused projects.

    • How do you think the committee could make decision-making more participatory?
    • The committee can make decision-making more participatory by strengthening communication between the funding committee and the wider community at different stages of the funding cycle. This includes clearly explaining funding priorities, eligibility criteria, and assessment standards before application deadlines, as well as providing structured feedback after decisions are made.

Regular community check-ins, open documentation of processes, and learning-focused feedback mechanisms can help demystify grant decisions and build trust. Creating intentional spaces for dialogue with networks, fan clubs, and affiliates can also ensure that diverse perspectives are reflected in decision-making.

    • How do you think the committee could improve grantmaking so it has a greater impact?
    • The committee can improve grantmaking impact by supporting projects that have clear, measurable community outcomes and realistic implementation plans. Emphasizing strong documentation, reporting, and knowledge sharing will help ensure that funded projects contribute beyond their immediate activities to the wider Wikimedia ecosystem.

Impact can also be strengthened by encouraging collaboration across communities, mentoring first-time applicants, and intentionally supporting underrepresented groups such as minority language and regional communities. Regular learning reviews from completed projects can help inform future funding decisions and improve the overall quality of applications.

    • How can the committee influence the grantmaking process to have a greater impact?
    • Grantmaking impact can be improved by prioritizing projects with clear community outcomes, realistic implementation plans, and strong alignment with Wikimedia goals. The committee can also support greater impact by encouraging collaboration across communities, mentoring first-time applicants, and placing more emphasis on documentation and knowledge sharing from funded projects.

    • Equity requires recognizing differences in access, experience, and capacity across communities. Drawing from my work, I would support fair evaluation practices that consider context, encourage first-time and underrepresented applicants, and ensure that language and cultural projects are meaningfully supported alongside more established initiatives.
    • How would you ensure transparency and fairness in decision-making?
    • Transparency and fairness can be ensured through clear evaluation criteria, collective decision-making, and proper documentation at every stage of the process. Committee members should consistently disclose conflicts of interest and recuse themselves where necessary to maintain integrity.

Decisions should be based on agreed guidelines and recorded in a way that allows for accountability. Providing timely and constructive feedback to applicants, whether successful or not, also supports fairness and builds trust. Regular reflection on decision-making practices can help the committee identify gaps and improve consistency across funding cycles.

    • Can you commit to the expected time requirements?

Uncle Bash007

  • Which Nigerian state are you based in?
  • I am based in Katsina State, Nigeria.
  • Tell us about yourself and why you want to join the NNFP Committee.
  • I am an active editor with more than 50,000 edits across Wikimedia Projects. Since joining Wikimedia in 2019, I organised 10 projects via the rapid grants and engage in discussions relating to grant applications within the Hausa Community. I am one of the early editors to identify the gap in lack of collaboration and effective implementation of resources within editors in organising projects within the Hausa community. Hence, I have lead and organised meetings with the editors concerned and tried to find ways to minimise these issues. We even reached out to the then Grant Committee Sub Saharan region (Veronica Thaimani and Davit) with some possible solutions (but couldn’t get support).
    • What is your current participation in the Wikimedia movement or the Free Knowledge Ecosystem?
    • I am an active Wikimedia editor with a strong focus on content quality, community safety, and equity across Wikimedia projects. I currently serve as an Administrator on the Hausa Wikipedia and a New Page Reviewer on the English Wikipedia, where I support the maintenance of editorial standards and help ensure that new content meets Wikipedia’s notability, sourcing, and policy requirements. With more 50,000 contributions to WikimediaProjects, I was nominated for the award of "Wikimedian of the Year Award" during the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Distinguished Award 2025.
In my role as an administrator, I am involved in routine administrative tasks, including page maintenance, enforcing community consensus, and supporting dispute resolution processes. As a New Page Reviewer, I assess newly created articles, guide new contributors, and help prevent the publication of unsuitable or promotional content, thereby strengthening the overall reliability of the encyclopedia.
I am also currently studying Counter Vandalism on the English Wikipedia, with a focus on identifying, reverting, and preventing disruptive edits. This includes understanding vandalism patterns, using monitoring tools, and collaborating with other editors to maintain a constructive editing environment.
Beyond editorial and administrative work, I am deeply committed to addressing the gender gap on Wikimedia projects. I actively support initiatives that increase the visibility and representation of women and underrepresented genders through content creation, article improvement, and community engagement. This work aligns with Wikimedia’s broader movement strategy of knowledge equity and inclusive participation.
Through these engagements, I aim to contribute not only to content growth but also to a safer, more inclusive, and higher-quality Wikimedia ecosystem.
    • How do you think you could contribute to the committee's role and ways of working?
    • I will contribute my experience as a long-time Wikimedia editor and community organizer to ensure fair, impactful, and community-driven grant decisions. Having actively contributed to Wikimedia projects and organized multiple Wikimedia campaigns, I understand both the technical and practical realities of implementing community programs.
I will bring a strong ability to assess grant proposals based on their alignment with Wikimedia’s mission, feasibility, sustainability, and potential impact on local communities. My experience in planning and executing Wikimedia projects has equipped me with practical insights into budgeting, participant engagement, reporting, and risk management, which will help me provide constructive feedback to applicants and support them in strengthening their proposals.
Additionally, I am committed to transparency, inclusiveness, and capacity building within the Nigerian Wikimedia community. I will actively support underrepresented groups and emerging contributors by encouraging equitable access to funding and mentoring applicants where necessary. Through collaborative decision-making and clear communication, I aim to help the committee allocate resources responsibly while strengthening the growth and sustainability of Wikimedia activities across Nigeria.
    • How do you think the committee could make decision-making more participatory?
    • The committee can make decision-making more participatory by intentionally involving the wider Wikimedia Nigeria community at different stages of the grant process, while still maintaining efficiency and accountability. One effective approach is to create structured opportunities for community input, such as open calls for feedback on proposed funding priorities or thematic focus areas before each grant cycle. This helps ensure that funding decisions reflect real community needs and emerging gaps.
Additionally, the committee can adopt transparent review processes by clearly publishing selection criteria, timelines, and high-level decision rationales. Sharing anonymized summaries of approved and declined proposals, including key strengths and areas for improvement, allows community members to learn from the process and feel included, even when they are not directly funded.
Participatory decision-making can also be strengthened by engaging experienced community members as non-voting reviewers or advisors, particularly for specialized projects such as GLAM, education, or gender-focused initiatives. This broadens perspectives, reduces bias, and builds shared ownership of funding outcomes.
Finally, regular feedback mechanisms — such as post-grant surveys, community forums, and periodic town-hall discussions — can help the committee continuously refine its processes based on community experience. By combining transparency, consultation, and continuous feedback, the committee can foster trust and collective responsibility while making informed and timely funding decisions.
    • How do you think the committee could improve grantmaking so it has a greater impact?
    • The committee can improve grantmaking impact by placing stronger emphasis on strategic alignment, learning, and long-term community growth rather than focusing only on short-term outputs. This can begin with clearly defined funding priorities that respond to identified community needs, such as capacity building, content gaps, and inclusion of underrepresented communities. When applicants understand these priorities, proposals are more likely to deliver meaningful and measurable outcomes.
Another key improvement is providing stronger pre- and post-grant support. Offering proposal clinics, mentoring, or structured feedback before approval can help applicants refine ideas and improve implementation quality. After funding, light-touch check-ins and shared learning sessions can support grantees in overcoming challenges early and encourage knowledge sharing across projects, increasing collective impact.
The committee can also improve impact by using simple but effective evaluation metrics that focus on quality, sustainability, and community engagement, not just numerical targets. Tracking outcomes such as editor retention, skill transfer, partnerships formed, and reuse of content helps the committee understand what works and make better funding decisions over time.
Furthermore, by encouraging collaboration and follow-up projects can significantly amplify impact. Supporting initiatives that build on previous work, foster partnerships between communities, or have clear plans for continuity beyond the grant period ensures that funding contributes to lasting growth within the Wikimedia Nigeria ecosystem.
Lastly, the committee can create a timeline for grant application and can create local policies like;
  1. when you apply for this cycle you cannot apply in the next cycle; or,
  2. you can only apply 3 times in each calender year.
  3. New editors most display some form of commitment and must reach a number of contributions (like 1,000 for instance).
  4. Your name must not appear in more than 2 grant applications in a cycle etc. this can help in reducing massive grant application and repeated applications
    • How can the committee influence the grantmaking process to have a greater impact?
    • The committee can influence the grantmaking process for greater impact by playing a proactive and strategic role throughout the grant cycle, from setting priorities to supporting learning and accountability. One key way is by shaping clear funding guidelines and focus areas based on identified community needs and past grant outcomes. By signaling what types of projects are most impactful, the committee helps applicants design stronger, mission-aligned proposals from the start.
The committee can also influence impact through consistent and thoughtful proposal review. By asking the right questions—around feasibility, sustainability, community engagement, and risk—the committee can guide applicants toward more realistic and impactful project designs. Providing constructive feedback, even to unsuccessful applicants, helps raise the overall quality of future proposals and strengthens community capacity over time.
Beyond approvals, the committee can increase impact by encouraging collaboration, learning, and accountability. This includes promoting partnerships between applicants, supporting peer learning among grantees, and using post-grant reflections to identify best practices and recurring challenges. Feeding these insights back into future grant cycles allows the committee to continuously improve decision-making.
Finally, the committee can influence impact by modeling transparency, equity, and inclusiveness in its processes. Ensuring diverse perspectives in reviews and prioritizing underrepresented communities helps funding reach areas where it can create the greatest long-term value for the Wikimedia Nigeria ecosystem.
    • What skills, background, or experience could you bring to the committee?
    • I am an experienced Wikimedia contributor with over six years of active engagement across multiple Wikimedia projects. During this period, I have made more than 50,000 contributions, reflecting consistent involvement, dedication, and a strong commitment to improving the quality, reliability, and inclusiveness of free knowledge.
I am known for being hardworking, self-motivated, and community-oriented, with the ability to take initiative and follow through on long-term projects. My experience spans content creation, review, maintenance, and community support, particularly on the English Wikipedia.
I have strong technical and editorial skills and am proficient in using a wide range of Wikimedia tools, including Page Curation, Copyvio detection tools, Wikimedia Dashboard, and other monitoring and quality-control systems. These tools support my work in reviewing new pages, identifying policy issues, tracking campaign impact, and maintaining editorial standards.
In addition to individual editing, I have organized and supported campaigns focused on countering vandalism and addressing the gender gap on Wikimedia projects. These campaigns involved community coordination, editor training, content improvement, and awareness-raising, contributing to safer editing spaces and more equitable content representation.
Outside the Wikimedia movement, I have a creative background as a photographer, videographer, and graphic designer. These skills enhance my Wikimedia work through visual storytelling, documentation, and the creation of engaging educational materials. Recently, I have expanded into animation, using graphics and illustrations as tools for education, digital literacy, and knowledge dissemination.
By combining deep Wikimedia experience with strong creative and technical skills, I bring a multidisciplinary approach to knowledge sharing, community engagement, and educational outreach.
    • How would you ensure equity in allocating funding to diverse communities?
    • If selected to serve on the Nigerian National Funding Committee, I would prioritize equity, transparency, and community-centered decision-making in all funding processes. My approach would be guided by the understanding that equity does not mean equal distribution, but rather fair and needs-based allocation that recognizes historical, structural, and contextual disparities across communities.
Transparency would be a core principle of my work. I would support clear documentation of funding criteria, decision rationales, and feedback for applicants, ensuring that communities understand how and why decisions are made. Open communication builds trust, particularly for under-resourced or first-time applicants who may feel excluded from funding processes.
I would approach the role with selflessness and integrity, placing community impact above personal networks, affiliations, or preferences. This includes managing conflicts of interest responsibly and advocating for decisions based on evidence, community needs, and potential for long-term impact rather than familiarity or visibility.
To promote fairness, I would support assessment frameworks that consider contextual factors such as language barriers, limited access to resources, emerging communities, and local challenges. Proposals from smaller or less-resourced communities should not be disadvantaged for lacking polish, but rather evaluated for relevance, feasibility, and community benefit.
Supporting underrepresented genders and communities would be an intentional focus. I would advocate for proactive outreach, capacity-building, and mentorship for women, gender-diverse contributors, and marginalized groups to ensure they can access funding opportunities on equal footing. Where appropriate, I would support funding decisions that help close representation gaps and align with Wikimedia’s Knowledge Equity goals.
Finally, I would emphasize learning and accountability by encouraging post-grant reflection, shared learning, and community feedback. This helps ensure that funding not only reaches diverse communities, but also leads to sustainable impact and continuous improvement in grantmaking practices.
    • How would you ensure transparency and fairness in decision-making?
    • If selected to serve on the Funding Committee, I would ensure transparency and fairness by supporting clear, consistent, and accountable decision-making processes that are visible and understandable to the communities we serve.
I would advocate for clearly defined and publicly available criteria for evaluating funding proposals. When applicants understand what is being assessed—such as community impact, feasibility, equity considerations, and sustainability—it reduces uncertainty and perceptions of bias. Using shared scoring rubrics also helps ensure that all proposals are assessed consistently.
I would also support collective and documented decision-making. Decisions should be based on multiple reviewers rather than individual opinions, with written justifications recorded for each funding recommendation. This creates an audit trail, encourages thoughtful evaluation, and allows decisions to be reviewed and improved over time.
Also, I would promote fairness through conflict-of-interest management. This includes openly declaring potential conflicts, recusing myself where necessary, and ensuring that no committee member influences decisions involving their own networks or communities. This helps protect the integrity of the process and builds trust.
I would alsoencourage constructive feedback for applicants, especially those who are unsuccessful. Providing clear, respectful explanations helps applicants understand decisions, improve future proposals, and feel that the process was fair even when funding is not awarded.
Finally, I would support regular reflection and community feedback on funding decisions. Sharing high-level summaries of funded projects, lessons learned, and equity outcomes allows the broader community to see how resources are being allocated and to hold the committee accountable.
Through these practices, transparency becomes not just a value but a visible practice, and fairness becomes a consistent outcome, particularly for underrepresented and emerging communities.

  • Which Nigerian state are you based in?
  • Lagos State
  • Tell us about yourself and why you want to join the NNFP Committee.
  • I am a Nigerian freelance journalist, storyteller, and community organiser whose work sits at the intersection of human rights, LGBTQ+ visibility, climate justice, and knowledge equity. I am actively involved with Wiki for Human Rights Nigeria, where I work to close content gaps on Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects by documenting underrepresented communities, particularly LGBTQ+ Nigerians and through ethical storytelling, research, and community-led editing initiatives. My background in journalism, fact-checking, and human-centred reporting strengthens my approach to Wikimedia work, ensuring that marginalised narratives are represented accurately, responsibly, and in line with Wikimedia's core principles.

I want to join the Nigerian National Funding Programme (NNFP) Committee because I believe sustainable community growth depends on equitable access to resources, transparent decision-making, and a contextual understanding of local realities. Through my on-ground experience organising trainings, edit-a-thons, and capacity-building sessions for queer and allied communities, I have seen how funding decisions directly affect participation, safety, and long-term impact. Serving on the NNFP Committee would allow me to contribute a perspective that centers inclusion, risk awareness, and community care, particularly for groups that face legal, social, and structural barriers in Nigeria, while helping ensure that funded projects are impactful, accountable, and aligned with Wikimedia's mission of free knowledge for all.

    • What is your current participation in the Wikimedia movement or the Free Knowledge Ecosystem?
    • I am currently an active participant in the Wikimedia movement, contributing to the Free Knowledge Ecosystem through editing, community organising, capacity building, and advocacy for underrepresented communities. Under the username Obinna Tony on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata, my work focuses on improving the visibility, accuracy, and quality of content related to human rights, LGBTQ+ communities, gender, culture, and social justice in Nigeria.

My participation goes beyond individual edits. Through my work with Wiki for Human Rights Nigeria, I support the design and facilitation of edit-a-thons, virtual and in-person trainings, and community engagement activities, especially for queer and allied contributors who are often excluded from traditional knowledge spaces. I help new editors understand Wikimedia policies, safe participation practices, and the importance of reliable sourcing, drawing directly from my background in journalism and fact-checking.

I also contribute to Wikimedia Commons by supporting ethical documentation and media uploads, and to Wikidata by improving structured data that strengthens discoverability and global access to Nigerian and African narratives. Overall, my participation is rooted in a strong belief that free knowledge must be inclusive, locally grounded, and protective of vulnerable contributors, and that Wikimedia projects can be powerful tools for social memory, representation, and human rights documentation in Nigeria.

    • How do you think you could contribute to the committee's role and ways of working?
    • I would contribute to the NNFP Committee's role and ways of working through a blend of community-grounded insight, strong ethical judgment, and process-oriented thinking, shaped by my experience within Wikimedia and human rights spaces.

I would bring a grassroots perspective to funding deliberations. Having worked directly with editors and organisers from marginalised communities, particularly LGBTQ+ contributors, I understand the practical realities behind proposals: safety concerns, participation barriers, capacity gaps, and sustainability challenges. This enables me to assess funding requests not only on technical merit, but on realistic impact, risk awareness, and community benefit, ensuring decisions are sensitive to Nigeria's social and legal context.

Also, I would strengthen the committee's review and accountability processes. My background in journalism and fact-checking equips me to critically read proposals, ask clarifying questions, and support transparent evaluation frameworks. I value clear documentation, measurable outcomes, and learning-oriented reporting, and would advocate for feedback mechanisms that help applicants improve whether or not their proposals are approved.

Finally, I would contribute to a collaborative and inclusive working culture within the committee. I have experience facilitating discussions across diverse groups and am attentive to power dynamics, especially where newer or less visible communities may feel excluded. I would support ways of working that prioritize respectful dialogue, shared responsibility, and consensus-building, while remaining aligned with Wikimedia values and NNFP guidelines.

Overall, my contribution would help the committee function not just as a funding body but as a steward of equitable growth in the Nigerian Wikimedia ecosystem, ensuring resources are distributed in ways that are fair, strategic, and responsive to community needs.

    • How do you think the committee could make decision-making more participatory?
    • The committee could make decision-making more participatory by creating structured channels for community input beyond formal grant applications. This could include open listening sessions with active Wikimedia communities, anonymised feedback windows during funding cycles, and post-decision explanations that help applicants understand how criteria were applied. Introducing community reviewers or advisors, especially from underrepresented groups, on a rotating basis could also enrich deliberations without overburdening the committee. Also, publicly shared decision frameworks and timelines would build trust, while regular reflection sessions with grantees could ensure that learning flows both ways. Overall, participatory decision-making should center on openness, clarity, and respect for local knowledge, enabling communities to feel genuinely invested in how resources are allocated.
    • How do you think the committee could improve grantmaking so it has a greater impact?
    • To improve impact, I think the committee should place stronger emphasis on capacity building, sustainability, and learning, not just outputs. Small or emerging communities, especially marginalised ones, often need mentorship, phased funding, or non-financial support to succeed. Grantmaking that includes follow-up, peer learning, and reflective reporting can create longer-term impact than one-off activities.

I also believe impact increases when grants are assessed through a local-context lens, including understanding safety concerns, internet access, language barriers, and social risks affecting participation in Nigeria. Supporting projects that prioritize community care, documenting local knowledge, and retaining contributors will strengthen the ecosystem over time. Ultimately, impactful grantmaking is not only about funding projects, but about growing confident, resilient communities within the Wikimedia movement.

    • How can the committee influence the grantmaking process to have a greater impact?
    • Additionally, simplifying communication around funding criteria and decisions, using clear, accessible language, would help demystify the process. Participation increases when contributors feel heard, informed, and respected, even if their proposals are not funded.

Greater impact can be achieved by prioritising capacity building and sustainability, not just short-term activities. Grants should encourage skill transfer, documentation, and mentorship so communities can continue the work beyond the funding cycle.

I also believe impact improves when grantmaking is context-sensitive, recognising security risks, infrastructural limits, and burnout, especially for marginalised communities. Flexible funding models, realistic timelines, and support for community care can significantly strengthen outcomes and retention.

The committee can influence impact by setting clear expectations around learning, reporting, and shared growth, rather than only outputs. Encouraging grantees to document challenges, lessons learned, and best practices helps strengthen the entire Nigerian Wikimedia ecosystem.

The committee can also act as a bridge connecting grantees to mentors, experienced organisers, or relevant Wikimedia affiliates. By fostering collaboration rather than isolated projects, the committee helps ensure that grantmaking contributes to a stronger, more resilient movement, not just to individual events.

    • What skills, background, or experience could you bring to the committee?
    • I would contribute by bringing a community-rooted, equity-focused perspective to the committee's work. My experience working closely with marginalised contributors, especially LGBTQ+ communities, has taught me the importance of context, safety, and trust in programme design and funding decisions. I can help the committee assess proposals not just on technical strength, but on realistic impact, ethical considerations, and community readiness, while supporting transparent processes and clear feedback mechanisms that strengthen grantee capacity over time.

I bring a background in journalism, fact-checking, community organizing, and human rights advocacy, along with hands-on experience with Wikimedia projects under the username Obinna Tony on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata. I am skilled in research, proposal review, ethical storytelling, and community facilitation. Importantly, I also bring lived experience navigating restrictive environments, which allows me to assess risk, sustainability, and inclusion with nuance—ensuring that funding decisions are not only effective, but responsible and people-centered.

    • How would you ensure equity in allocating funding to diverse communities?
    • I would contribute by bringing a community-rooted, impact-focused perspective to the committee's work. My experience working directly with editors from marginalized communities—particularly LGBTQ+ contributors, has taught me how funding decisions translate into real participation, safety, and sustainability on the ground. I am intentional about transparency, documentation, and feedback loops, and I would support the committee in strengthening fair review processes, clearer communication with applicants, and consistent post-grant learning. I also value collaboration and would work to ensure both Wikimedia principles and local Nigerian realities guide decisions.

I would approach equity by advocating for context-aware evaluation, recognizing that not all communities start from the same place or face the same risks. This means supporting emerging groups, regional communities, and marginalized identities with fair consideration, mentorship, and flexibility rather than holding them to the same expectations as long-established groups. Equity, to me, also involves transparency, while clearly explaining decisions, and ensuring that funding reaches communities that are often excluded from knowledge production but have strong potential to contribute meaningfully to the Wikimedia ecosystem.

    • How would you ensure transparency and fairness in decision-making?
    • I would ensure transparency and fairness by supporting clear criteria, documented deliberations, and consistent feedback. Applicants should understand why decisions were made and how they can improve. I also believe in declaring conflicts of interest, recusing myself when necessary, and centering collective responsibility in decisions. Fairness is not only about outcomes but about trust—and trust is built when processes are open, respectful, and accountable.
    • Can you commit to the expected time requirements?
    • Yes, I can commit to the expected time requirements. I am accustomed to balancing multiple Wikimedia projects, community activities, and freelance work, and I am committed to actively participating in committee meetings, evaluations, and follow-up discussions to ensure the NNFP grantmaking process's success and impact. And I work remotely full-time.

    • How do you think the committee could make decision-making more participatory?
    • The committee could make decision-making more participatory by strengthening structured community input, transparency, and shared responsibility throughout the grantmaking process. This includes clearly communicating evaluation criteria, timelines, and expectations, and providing accessible guidance to applicants and community members. Creating opportunities for collective review and dialogue, such as moderated discussions or feedback rounds among committee members, can help surface diverse perspectives and reduce individual bias. • How do you think the committee could improve grantmaking so it has a greater impact?
    • The committee could improve grantmaking impact by strengthening support before, during, and after funding. Clearer guidance during the application stage, including examples of strong proposals and common challenges, would help applicants design more realistic and sustainable projects. During implementation, light-touch mentorship and regular check-ins can support grantees in addressing challenges early and adapting activities when needed. This approach helps ensure that projects remain aligned with their goals while responding to community realities. To increase long-term impact, the committee could place greater emphasis on learning, documentation, and knowledge sharing. Encouraging grantees to document outcomes, lessons learned, and best practices would allow successful models to be replicated across communities. By focusing on sustainability, capacity building, and shared learning, grantmaking can move beyond short-term outputs to create lasting community impact.
    • How can the committee influence the grantmaking process to have a greater impact?
    • The committee can influence the grantmaking process to achieve greater impact by embedding strategic guidance, capacity support, and continuous learning throughout each stage. By setting clear priorities and evaluation criteria aligned with community needs and Wikimedia movement goals, the committee can ensure that grants support high-impact, sustainable initiatives. Providing mentorship and feedback to applicants before and during implementation allows grantees to refine their projects, address challenges early, and strengthen outcomes. Additionally, the committee can promote documentation and knowledge sharing of project results, enabling lessons learned to inform future grants and replicate successful approaches. Combined, my experience in grantmaking, knowledge equity, and grassroots community development positions me to contribute effectively to the committee’s work, supporting initiatives that are impactful, inclusive, and sustainable.
    • How would you ensure equity in allocating funding to diverse communities?
    • I would ensure equity in allocating funding by applying a structured, transparent, and context-aware approach throughout the grantmaking process. This begins with setting clear evaluation criteria that recognize the needs of underrepresented languages, regions, demographics, and thematic groups, ensuring that all communities have a fair opportunity to access funding. I would prioritize diverse representation within the review process, encouraging committee discussions that surface different perspectives and mitigate bias. Where possible, I would seek input from local community members or experienced organizers to better understand specific challenges and opportunities for emerging or marginalized groups. Additionally, I would support capacity-building for applicants, providing guidance, resources, and feedback to ensure communities with less experience in grant applications can submit competitive proposals. By combining fair assessment, inclusive deliberation, and proactive support, the committee can allocate funding equitably while maximizing impact across diverse Wikimedia communities.

Inclusion, The goal is to move from a model where the committee informs the community of decisions, to one where the community is consulted, collaborates, and in some areas, has delegated authority.

    • How do you think the committee could improve grantmaking so it has a greater impact?
    • The Nigeria National Funding Program Committee can improve grant making impact by focus on planned alignment, capacity building, and ecosystem strengthening. The following are my point
  • Shift from Project-Funding to Impact-Funding: the funding should focus on proposals with clearly define measurable outcome rather than activities, allow proven contributors and high potential initiatives to secure longer term funding for sustainable impact. Collaboration with institutions like libraries, archive, universities and museum.
  • Strengthen the Nigerian Wikimedia Ecosystem: Strategic Thematic Funding such as Annually identify 1–2 high-impact thematic areas (e.g., Nigeria’s 2025–2027 national priorities, bridging digital gender gap, preserving endangered languages) and invite proposals specifically addressing them. Invest in Open Infrastructure such as Fund contributions to tools, bots, datasets, or Wikidata that remove systemic barriers (e.g., improving Hausa Wikipedia’s auto-translation tools or digitizing public domain Nigerian archives). Foster Leadership Pathways that is designing grants that explicitly develop next-generation leaders, especially from underrepresented regions and genders.
  • Address Systemic Barriers: these are some of the challenges most Nigeria wikimedians are facing to make impact, the committee needs to looks at: Offline & Low-Bandwidth Solutions such as Fund initiatives that work without steady internet (e.g., Kiwix deployments in universities, offline editing workshops). Data Support which will Allow reasonable budgets for internet data for project participants—a real barrier in many regions. Language Equity such as actively solicit and support projects in Nigerian languages beyond English, with appropriate translation and mentorship support.

I support the movement by coordinating training sessions, edit-a-thons, mentorship initiatives, and community collaborations, particularly in the areas of education, indigenous languages, and cultural heritage documentation. My work emphasizes editor retention, leadership growth, and community-driven ownership, while guiding emerging organizers to understand and apply Wikimedia processes in a responsible and sustainable way.

  • How do you think you could contribute to the committee's role and ways of working?
    • I believe I can contribute meaningfully to the committee’s work by bringing a strong understanding of the needs and realities of the Nigerian Wikimedia community. I am committed to transparent, fair, and accountable decision-making, ensuring that funding decisions are guided by clear criteria and shared community values. Drawing from my experience leading projects that promote equity, inclusion, and collaboration, I will actively support decisions that create balanced opportunities across communities and regions in Nigeria. I am dedicated to working collaboratively with other committee members, listening to diverse perspectives, and helping ensure that the committee’s processes foster trust, inclusiveness, and sustainable community growth.

  • How do you think the committee could make decision-making more participatory?
    • The committee can make decision-making more participatory by embedding early and inclusive engagement, such as proposal support clinics, open briefing sessions, clear and accessible guidelines, and well-structured feedback channels. These approaches would help communities better understand funding priorities and enable them to engage meaningfully throughout the decision-making process.

  • How do you think the committee could improve grantmaking so it has a greater impact?
    • The committee can improve grantmaking impact by providing clear strategic direction, aligning priorities and evaluation criteria with community needs and Wikimedia goals. Offering capacity support, mentorship, and timely feedback before and during project implementation can help grantees strengthen their work and address challenges early. Additionally, encouraging documentation and shared learning from funded projects will allow successful approaches to be replicated, ensuring grants deliver sustainable and measurable impact across communities.
  • What skills, background, or experience could you bring to the committee?
    • I bring experience in community engagement, volunteer coordination, and collaborative leadership, gained through my active participation in the Wikimedia movement. Through this work, I have developed strong skills in transparent governance, clear documentation, effective communication, and consensus-building, which are essential for the committee’s work within the NNFP.
    • I also have a proven ability to work productively in diverse teams, manage responsibilities responsibly, and contribute thoughtfully to policy review and oversight. I value accountability, ethical practice, and continuous improvement, and I am open to feedback and learning. These skills position me to support the committee in strengthening inclusive decision-making, enhancing the impact of grantmaking, and ensuring NNFP initiatives are implemented effectively and in alignment with strategic goals.
  • How would you ensure equity in allocating funding to diverse communities?
    • To ensure equity in funding, it’s important to recognize that different communities have different needs, experience, and resources. I would support fair evaluation that considers these differences, encourage new and underrepresented applicants, and make sure language and cultural projects get support along with more established initiatives.
  • How would you ensure transparency and fairness in decision-making?
  • To ensure transparency and fairness in decision-making, I would focus on clear criteria, structured processes, and open communication. This means:
  • Clear and objective evaluation: All proposals would be assessed using predefined criteria such as community impact, sustainability, inclusivity, and alignment with the Wikimedia Movement Strategy 2030. Standardized scoring would help reduce bias and ensure consistency across different communities.
  • Documented decisions: Committee discussions and funding recommendations would be well-documented, including the reasons behind decisions. This ensures accountability and helps the community understand how choices were made.
  • Evidence based review: Decisions would be based on proposal content, community context, and past outcomes, not personal preferences. Involving multiple committee members ensures diverse perspectives and fairness.
  • Open communication: Applicants would receive clear feedback, explanations for decisions, and guidance for improvement, building trust and strengthening future proposals.
  • Monitoring and reflection: Regular review of processes would help identify areas for improvement, correct unintended biases, and ensure fair treatment across all regions, languages, and community types.
  • By following these steps, the committee can make decisions that are transparent, fair, and accountable while supporting equitable opportunities for all communities.
  • Can you commit to the expected time requirements?
    • Yes, I am fully committed to dedicating the necessary time for reviewing proposals, attending meetings, participating in discussions, following up on tasks, and completing reporting responsibilities as a member of the NNFP Committee.

  • Which Nigerian state are you based in?
  • Gombe, Northeastern Nigeria
  • Tell us about yourself and why you want to join the NNFP Committee.
  • I am Muib Shefiu, a Wikimedia contributor and community organiser based in Gombe State, Northeastern Nigeria. For over four years, I have actively contributed to the Wikimedia movement through the English Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, focusing on article creation, content improvement, mentorship, and the organisation of community-led initiatives.
  • My interest in joining the NNFP Committee stems from a strong commitment to strengthening community-driven grantmaking in Nigeria and ensuring that limited resources are allocated in alignment with the 2030 strategy recommendations. I am particularly motivated to support grant decisions that emphasise capacity building, sustainability, and long-term community impact rather than short-term quantitative outcomes.
    • What is your current participation in the Wikimedia movement or the Free Knowledge Ecosystem?
    • How do you think you could contribute to the committee's role and ways of working?
    • My main strength is in my active contribution to Wikimedia foundation project. Over the years there have been issues around the grantees experience in leading projects. Therefore, in the committee, I will focus on an in-depth investigation into the grantees contributions beyond just the edit counts in order to determine if the grantees would be able to successfully carry out project any of the chosen wiki projects. This would ensure that the limited resources that we have are channeled to the right projects.
    • Also, I have deep cultural understanding of both the southern and northern Nigeria because of my years of living in both regions. Therefore, I would be able to bring this experience to reflect with the objectives of any of the grants proposal to determine whether it would have impact or not.

    • How do you think the committee could make decision-making more participatory?
    • The committee can make decision-making more participatory by intentionally establishing structured feedback surveys between grant cycles for local communities, grantees, and committee members. These surveys would help capture diverse perspectives, identify emerging challenges, and inform future funding decisions. In addition, organising at least two post-grant learning discussions each year would create open forums where community members can reflect on project outcomes, share local insights, and collectively identify areas for improvement.
    • Also, I believe that engaging administrators and experienced reviewers across Wikimedia projects in consultative deliberations would strengthen participatory decision-making. This is because their close interaction with project's campaigns contents on different Wikimedia platforms will give the committee their practical insights to better understand on-wiki realities, assess the effectiveness of funded activities, and make more informed, community-grounded decisions.
    • How do you think the committee could improve grantmaking so it has a greater impact?
    • Grantmaking can be improved by prioritising long-term capacity building rather than one-off activities. The committee should place stronger emphasis on sustainability, mentorship components, and knowledge transfer within proposals. Monitoring and evaluation should go beyond quantitative metrics like edit counts to include community growth, editor retention, leadership development, and alignment with the Wikimedia 2030 Movement Strategy. This approach will ensure that funded projects leave lasting impact within communities.
    • How can the committee influence the grantmaking process to have a greater impact?
    • The committee can influence the process by setting clear expectations for proposal quality, impact measurement, and reporting standards. This can be done by providing explicit and constructive feedback to applicants, especially first-time organisers which will help strengthen proposals before approval. Also, reading and sharing lessons learned from previous grants during the post grant learning discussion that I mentioned under the question How do you think the committee could make decision-making more participatory? will raise the overall quality and effectiveness of the funded projects.
    • What skills, background, or experience could you bring to the committee?
    • I bring over four years of experience contributing to Wikimedia projects, particularly the English Wikipedia, with extensive involvement in article creation, content curation, project tracking, and mentorship. With this experience, I would be able to critically assess not only project outputs but also the actual experience and capacity of participants across specific Wikimedia projects, as reflected in both their contributions and narrative reports. This allows for a more accurate evaluation of project feasibility, learning outcomes, and long-term community impact.
    • Also, I have lived for more than a decade in both Southern and Northern Nigeria, I possess linguistics and cultural competence that enables me to engage effectively with participants from diverse backgrounds. This lived experience allows me to better interpret community contexts, understand local challenges, and assess whether proposed activities and reported outcomes genuinely align with the realities of the communities involved. These skills position me to contribute meaningfully to fair, informed, and context-sensitive decision-making within the committee.
    • How would you ensure equity in allocating funding to diverse communities?
    • I would ensure equity by advocating for fair regional representation and considering contextual challenges faced by underrepresented and emerging communities. This includes recognising differences in access to internet, language barriers, and community maturity. Funding decisions should balance support for experienced organisers with intentional inclusion of new and marginalised groups, ensuring that opportunities are not concentrated in already well-resourced communities.
    • How would you ensure transparency and fairness in decision-making?
    • Transparency and fairness can be ensured by adhering strictly to established guidelines, documenting decision criteria, and maintaining clear communication with applicants. I would support the use of an agreed evaluation criteria by the NNFP committee members and also the use of collective discussions within the committee to reduce bias when there is a tie. Also, Where possible, feedback should be provided to applicants to help them understand decisions and improve future proposals, reinforcing trust in the process.
    • Can you commit to the expected time requirements?
    • Yes, I can commit to the expected time requirements of the NNFP Committee. I understand the responsibilities involved and I am confident in my ability to balance these commitments alongside my other Wikimedia activities.

  • Which Nigerian state are you based in?
    • Rivers State
  • Tell us about yourself and why you want to join the NNFP Committee.
    • I am a Wikimedian with active contributions on Wikimedia projects. I am a Librarian with the University of Port Harcourt. I am a leader of an informal Wikimedia group that have trained students and staff of higher institutions in Rivers and Akwa Ibom states. In my wikimedia journey, i have led campaigns, recieved grants for proposals and collaborated with other members of the community to lead impactful campaigns in the Nigeria community and beyond. My contributions are documented on my userpage User:Jerry minor

I am one of the pioneer committee members of the Nigeria Usergroup Micro grants team (2022/2023).

The Nigerian National funding program aims to bring resources closer to the communities while ensuring effective distribution and meeting of set targets by volunteers in the committee. The opportunity to be one of the volunteers who will ensure that these resources are fully utilized leading to realization of the movement strategic goals, improved contribution from editors, volunteer retention, and expansion of the Wikimedia movement goals in Nigeria is a driving factor behind my choice to apply for this position. Joining the NNFP committee will help to improve my leadership skills in terms of evaluation and writing of grant winning proposals. I have been privileged to serve on the pioneer micro grant committee for the Nigeria community in 2022 and this helped to sharpen my critical thinking skills, evaluation skills, and also decision making skills. The NNFP will be a bigger shoe and i am confident that joining the NNFP will improve my skills in the aforementioned areas. I also want to expand my network in the Wikimedia community in Nigeria and beyond. Serving under committees provide that privilege to learn from diverse set of people, listen to the views of others and also work as a team to meet the committees goals. Finally, i want to join the NNFP because i am passionate about supporting capacity building in the different committees through efficient distribution of resources. As a librarian and Wikimedian, i have been involved in various capacity building training on and off Wikimedia space and one of the reasons why some of these trainings do not yield adequate result is because of the absence of effective support in terms of resources. The NNFP is well positioned to identify impactful proposals, discover grey areas, and also approve proposals that will ensure expansion of the movement goals in Nigeria.

    • What is your current participation in the Wikimedia movement or the Free Knowledge Ecosystem?
    • I am an active member of the following groups under the Wikimedia movement.
  • Rivers Network
  • Igbo wikimedia usergroup
  • GLAM Wiki
  • EduWiki Community

Under these groups, i have actively contributed to the group campaigns and other activities geared at improving the movement goals, visibility of the movement and retention of new editors in the community.

    • How do you think you could contribute to the committee's role and ways of working?
    • I will ensure that there are set down targets to be met during meetings. The essence of setting targets is to ensure that meetings are fully productive and goal driven. Without setting out targets, goals cannot be achieved. If there is a clear target of the number of grants to be reviewed during meetings, it will help committee members to focus and do their best to ensure that meetings are productive and successful.
    • As a member of the commitee, I will bring my knowledge of grant reviewing to contribute to existing knowledge. In my past roles as reviewer under the micro grant committee, i have gained hands-on experience on how to review grant applications, conduct background checks on applicants, and review reports to ensure that it meets the grant criterias. I am bringing this skill to ensure that the committee meets its targets and also get its required results.
    • As someone who has served as the secretary of my professional association in Nigeria, I will offer secretarial services to the committe in terms of documenting meeting minutes. Documentation of meeting minutes will lead to improved evaluation of the targets, ensure that key points are not lost in transit, and also set a clear path for commitee members to follow.

    • How do you think the committee could make decision-making more participatory?
    • Development of a working white paper will be key towards making decision-making more engaging and participatory. When applicants and reviewers are aware of the requirements needed to get a grant, it will guide their application process from applicants, and also lead to improved participation of commitee members. The absence of a working white-paper will lead to one sided judgement as the commitee will not have a standard to follow before grants can be approved. This will lead to imbalance and can affect the overall decision making of the commitee.
  • There should be assigning of task for committee members. When committee members are assigned various task before meetings, it will help to ensure participatory decision making and also unity of members. When the committee members are not properly assigned task, some members may become dormant, and this will affect the overall productivity of the committee.
    • There should be ground rules for participation and attendance. When commitee members know that there maybe sanctions for absentees without proper communication, meetings will be taken seriously and this will lead to improved participation and unified decision making process. When commitee members are absent from meetings and fail to communciate their views on issues, decision making will be stalled and this will affect the success of the commitee.
    • There should be periodic evaluation of the commitee activities. Evaluation helps to bring to light the strengths and weaknesses of a group. With periodic meetings for evaluation, the committee will be able to harness its decision making and correct lapses where needed.

    • How do you think the committee could improve grantmaking so it has a greater impact?
    • There should be identification of impactful topics areas in the Nigeria community. The identification of impactful areas will enable the committee to improve grant approval targetted at these areas that will have a positive impact.
    • There should be adequate onboarding process for committee members. Onboarding helps to communicate individual and collective responsibilites, detail out the rules of engagement, and create a clear path for the functioning of the committee. When onboarding is done properly, commitee members will be aware of the task ahead and prepare themselves for its success.
    • There should be proper review of grant reports submitted after campaigns by the applicants. The task of reviewing reports can be assigned to some members of the committe to ensure that the terms of agreement for grant disbursement were followed. When reports are not effectively reviewed in a short space of time, it will hamper the grant making process and lead to low impact.
    • There should be a base amounts for items seeking for approval from applicants. Since committe members are also members of the Nigeria community, they possess some level of understanding of market prices and amounts attached to items needed to ensure a successful grants. Without the existence of guiding document for approval of amounts attached to items, approvals maybe lopsided leading to reduced impact in the community.
    • There should be more preference for applications with collaboration and proven team leadership. Collaboration and team work help to tackle lapses in campaigns, improve editor commitment to projects, and also offer a sense of responsibility to applicants.
    • How can the committee influence the grantmaking process to have a greater impact?
    • Grantmaking process can have a greater impact when they are community driven. Community driven relates to activities within the community aimed at improving the Nigerian community either on the language level or as a usergroup. Some communities have poor representation in the Nigerian Usergroup. When grants are aimed at such communities, it will lead to improved representation and editor retention in the ecosystem.
    • There should timely feedback from the committee to applicants. Timely and well detailed feedback help to inform applicants on areas that are not well developed in their propsals, give constructive feedback on proposals, and also fine-tune proposals to ensure impactful activity in the community.
    • The committee should set up proper communication channels. As a matter of priority, there should be a liaison officer between the committee and the grantee who will respond to queries, questions, and suggestions from applicants where needed. This will help to reduce information vacuum experienced in the wider community due to limited staff strength and large number of applicants.
    • There should be room for backup plans for the committee. Back up plans implies that meetings should be documented on meeting platforms like google docs, zoom and similar platforms. This will help to ensure that all information is properly documented and also provide reference point in the event of any confusion, loss of documents or misunderstanding by committee members.
    • There should be accountability and integrity from committee members. Accountability helps to ensure that everyone is responsible for assigned task and work towards its success. Integrity helps to ensure that committee discussions are not shared to non-commitee members and also preserves the code of conduct in the committee.

    • What skills, background, or experience could you bring to the committee?
    • As one of the pioneer committee members of the Nigeria Usergroup Micro grants team (2022/2023), i am bringing my team player skills to the committee. As a member of the micro grants team, i ensured that everyone had a sense of belonging and their views were respected. This helped to achieve meeting goals and we were able to review as many applications as possible in the short time for our meetings.
    • As the immediate past Public relations officer for the Nigerian Library Association, Rivers State Chapter, i am bringing my communication and coordination skills to the committee. In this role, i ensured that members were updated on the associations programs, activities, and responded to the various queries from members. I will be bringing this skill to ensure community members are well updated on the activities of the commitee and give timely feedback where necessary.
    • As the co-founder of the Port Harcourt Wikimedia Hub, an informal Wikimedia group housing all the staff and students of higher institutions who have been trained on Wikimedia projects by my team, i was able to cordinate trainings with support from other members of the Nigerian community in Rivers State. I am bringing this cordination skills to the commitee to ensure that meetings achieve the necessary target and also cordination of commitee activities is done successfully.
    • As an active Wikimedian with practical knowledge of topics of impact and community development, i am bringing my wealth of knowledge in identifying areas of impacts and applications which will yield the necessary results.

    • How would you ensure equity in allocating funding to diverse communities?
    • There should be a disbursement policy guidning the allocation of funds to diverse communities. This policy documents helps to ensure equity, fairness, and balance in the sharing of resources amongst the different communities.
    • There should be a clear statement on the number of grants applicable to a grantee in a given year. This clear statement of funding will help to ensure that theres equity and fairness in the community.
    • There should be a process of voting for agreed proposals by the committee members before the funds can be allocated. This will give committee members a sense of belonging. Voting will help to ensure that all proposals receive equal consideration, scrutiny, and selection. This will improve equity in disbursement of funds.
    • There should be a document available to members of the Nigeria community showing the funds that have been disbursed, and the applications that were not successful. This will improve the committees transparency and openness in the disbursement process.
    • Funding should be in line with the movements pattern for funding of proposals aimed at improving the movement activities and improve editor retention.
    • Funding should be rotational among the different communities.Rotational funding ensures that every community is given a fair hearing except when there is an absence of applications from the community.

    • How would you ensure transparency and fairness in decision-making?
    • Every committee member should be respected and given fair hearing on proposals for consideration. When different views are shared on an applications, it can be considered holistically leading to improved results.
    • There should be sanctions for commitee members who do not stick to the rule of engagement. Information about meetings and minutes of meetings should not be shared with individuals who are not committee members. Any one that is found wanting should be sanctioned by the committee.
    • There should be honesty and openness in the process of reviewing proposals. Honest by committee members will lead to trust in the leadership of the committee and increased trust leads to better decision making for proposal decisions.

    • Can you commit to the expected time requirements?
    • Yes, i can commit the expected time requirements for commitee meetings, reviews, deliberations, and other activities. I have been involved in other volunteering activities in my career and i was able to blend them with my primary duties as a librarian.

  • Which Nigerian state are you based in?
  • I am based in Lagos State
  • Tell us about yourself and why you want to join the NNFP Committee.
  • My name is Amarachi Okoro, and I am an active Wikimedian with a strong interest in community building and advancing open knowledge initiatives. My engagement within the Wikimedia movement has evolved from editing into programme coordination, community support, and campaign implementation, allowing me to contribute both strategically and at the grassroots level.

I currently serve as the Campaigns and Partnerships Lead for Africa Wiki Women, an initiative dedicated to addressing gender gaps through the Wikimedia projects. In this role, I support the design, coordination, and evaluation of community programmes and campaigns, while providing guidance and support to contributors. My journey with Africa Wiki Women began as a fellow, during which I worked within the communications team and supported technical research efforts. Over time, this experience expanded into responsibilities that include proposal and grant writing, developing streamlined programmes that respond to community needs, and working intentionally across English- and French-speaking communities, with respect for cultural values and diversity. I am interested in joining the Nigeria National Funding Program Committee because I am deeply committed to strengthening community-led initiatives through inclusive, accountable, and participatory grantmaking. My experiences have given me a practical understanding of how well-structured and equitable funding processes can empower communities, address representation gaps, and support sustainable impact. I believe this positions me to contribute thoughtful, context-aware insights that support fair and impactful funding decisions across Nigeria.

    • What is your current participation in the Wikimedia movement or the Free Knowledge Ecosystem?
    • I am an active editor, deeply committed to building strong, inclusive communities and advancing open knowledge in Nigeria. I currently serve as Campaigns and Partnerships Lead for Africa Wiki Women, where I design, coordinate, and evaluate campaigns that address content gaps, particularly around African women. My work includes supporting contributors, mentoring fellows, facilitating trainings, and connecting programs across English- and French-speaking communities while ensuring inclusiveness.

I also serve as Programs Manager for the Wikimedia Nigeria Imo State Network, supporting local initiatives, trainings, and contributor coordination. These roles have given me hands-on experience in sustaining program operations, coordinating with regional hubs, and supporting grantees and applicants directly aligning with the responsibilities of a committee member in the National Funding Program.

Additionally, I have served as a jury member for Wiki Loves Africa “Farm to Plate”, where I evaluated proposals and images in a structured, fair, and transparent process. This experience strengthened my skills in decision-making, contextual evaluation, and balancing equity with program goals, which are critical to supporting productive committee work and fostering sustainable impact across Nigeria.

    • How do you think you could contribute to the committee's role and ways of working?
    • I can confidently contribute a community-centered, strategic, and collaborative approach.

My experience in coordinating programs, mentoring contributors, and managing multi-lingual campaigns equips me to support committee operations, communicate effectively with applicants and grantees, and share contextual knowledge that strengthens decisions. In addition, my community-based communication skills—including facilitating discussions, bridging diverse perspectives, and engaging contributors respectfully—allow me to translate grassroots feedback into actionable insights, ensuring that committee decisions are inclusive, well-informed, and responsive to the needs of diverse Wikimedia communities.

    • How do you think the committee could make decision-making more participatory?
    • Decision-making becomes more participatory when the committee shares evaluation criteria clearly, encourages dialogue amongst community members, and offers structured feedback to applicants. One of the practical approaches aside from a feedback session, is to use a simple, easy-to-navigate tool like a Google Form to collect feedback from applicants after each funding cycle. This allows applicants to receive constructive, learning-oriented input while giving the committee insight into areas where processes or communications could be improved. By actively considering regional, cultural, and linguistic diversity in this feedback, the committee can ensure all communities feel included, empowered, and fairly represented.
    • How do you think the committee could improve grantmaking so it has a greater impact?
    • Grantmaking can achieve greater impact by aligning funding with community needs, sustainability, and capacity-building, and by supporting projects that address gaps in representation and access. One practical approach is to hold periodic grantmaking discussion sessions, where past and current grantees are invited to share their experiences, challenges, and suggestions. This allows the committee to learn directly from those implementing projects, refine criteria, and provide mentorship or guidance that enhances the effectiveness and long-term value of funded initiatives. Encouraging collaboration, realistic project scopes, and cross-initiative learning ensures that grants create lasting impact for local Wikimedia communities.
    • How can the committee influence the grantmaking process to have a greater impact?
    • The committee can enhance the impact of grantmaking by actively integrating equity, mentorship, and lessons learned into every stage of the process. This could include creating structured feedback sessions for applicants, inviting past grantees to share their experiences, and tracking project outcomes to inform future funding decisions. By embedding these practices, the committee ensures that funding decisions are not only fair but also strategically aligned with community needs, sustainability, and capacity-building, ultimately creating long-term value for Wikimedia communities across Nigeria.
    • What skills, background, or experience could you bring to the committee?
    • I bring hands-on experience in programme coordination, campaign management, contributor support, and evaluation, with a strong focus on gender equity and regional representation, demonstrated through my work with Africa Wiki Women. I have designed and implemented initiatives that bridge content gaps, mentor contributors, and strengthen community participation, while carefully navigating linguistic and cultural diversity. Additionally, my experience in grant evaluation and structured decision-making allows me to provide context-aware insights that support transparent, equitable, and impactful funding decisions, ensuring that the committee’s work is both fair and strategically aligned with community needs.
    • How would you ensure equity in allocating funding to diverse communities?
    • I would ensure equity by intentionally considering regions, languages, gender, and community representation, paying close attention to historically underrepresented groups. A practical approach would be to have committee members independently review proposals and provide their comments and recommendations, which are then discussed collectively to form final decisions. This process ensures that each perspective is considered without bias, while promoting fair, transparent, and inclusive allocation of funding that addresses real community needs and opportunities.
    • How would you ensure transparency and fairness in decision-making?
    • I would ensure transparency and fairness by making the committee’s process visible and understandable to all applicants. For example, I would support clear, easy-to-access documentation of criteria and scoring, and make sure that committee deliberations are recorded or summarized in a way that applicants can see how decisions were reached. I would also encourage open discussion within the committee, invite diverse perspectives, and proactively disclose any conflicts of interest. By combining clear communication, accessible explanations, and accountability at every step, applicants and communities can trust that decisions are fair, thoughtful, and grounded in the needs of the people the funding aims to serve.
    • Can you commit to the expected time requirements?
    • Yes, I am fully committed to dedicating the necessary time for meetings, proposal reviews, evaluations, and trainings.

Mr. Snatch

  • Which Nigerian state are you based in?

I am based in Borno State, Nigeria.

  • Tell us about yourself and why you want to join the NNFP Committee.

My name is Abubakar Umar Sadiq, Mr. Snatch a telecommunications engineer, language advocate, media professional, and long-standing Wikimedian from Borno State. I currently work with Radio Nigeria Sunshine FM Potiskum 104.5, where I actively support public information access and community education. Over the years, I have contributed to and coordinated multiple Wikimedia initiatives focused on Northern Nigeria, with particular attention to minority languages, cultural heritage, and underrepresented communities. I am seeking to join the NNFP Committee because I believe sustainable and equitable grantmaking requires decision-makers who understand local contexts, community realities, and structural barriers to participation. My goal is to ensure that funding meaningfully empowers communities, strengthens capacity, and advances knowledge equity across Nigeria.

  • What is your current participation in the Wikimedia movement or the Free Knowledge Ecosystem?

I am an active contributor, organizer, and campaign lead across several Wikimedia projects.

I have led and supported major documentation and community campaigns.

In addition to content creation and campaign coordination, I have contributed at the movement governance and quality assurance level by serving as a jury member for wiki Loves Africa and Wiki Loves Earth 2025, where I participated in evaluating submissions based on quality, relevance, and impact, in line with Wikimedia Commons standards.

  • How do you think you could contribute to the committee's role and ways of working?

I would contribute by bringing my close connection to local communities and my understanding of how the Wikimedia movement works in practice. Because I work directly with contributors in Northern Nigeria, I understand the real challenges people face, including language barriers, security concerns, and limited resources.

I would support grant assessments that take local context into account, rather than using one approach for everyone. I also believe funding should encourage new ideas, while still helping communities build something that can last beyond the grant period.

Within the committee, I would support clear documentation, open discussion, and shared learning, so decisions are well understood and lessons are carried forward. Most importantly, I would always look at proposals in terms of their long-term value to communities, not just short-term outputs or numbers.

  • How do you think the committee could make decision-making more participatory?

Decision-making can become more participatory when communities feel heard before, during, and after funding decisions. This can be done by regularly engaging communities through simple consultations ahead of funding cycles and by checking in with them once decisions are made. There should also be open and friendly feedback channels, where applicants and contributors can share their thoughts and learn from the process, even if their proposals are not selected.

Bringing regional and language perspectives into committee discussions is important, so decisions reflect the diversity of communities involved.

Finally, sharing clear and easy to understand explanations of decisions helps people understand how and why outcomes were reached. When communities can see the process clearly, it builds trust, accountability, and a stronger sense of shared ownership.

  • How do you think the committee could improve grantmaking so it has a greater impact?

The committee can make grantmaking more impactful by focusing on building the skills and capacity of communities, not just funding individual projects. This includes supporting mentorship, training, and documentation efforts that help communities grow stronger over time.

It’s also important to support new and emerging communities, not only the ones that are already established, so everyone has a fair chance to contribute to the movement. Encouraging collaboration between different communities helps share knowledge and ideas, making projects stronger and more sustainable.

Finally, grantmaking should include follow-up support and learning, so communities can improve from experience and continue to grow after the grant ends. Success should be measured not just by outputs, but by how communities develop, retain contributors, and become more resilient over time.

  • How can the committee influence the grantmaking process to have a greater impact?

The committee can make grantmaking more effective by guiding funding decisions to focus on real community needs. This means setting clear priorities that align with the movement’s goals, and intentionally supporting underserved regions and minority languages.

It can also share lessons learned and best practices from past projects, helping applicants design stronger proposals and make the most of funding opportunities. Finally, the committee can encourage creative approaches while making sure decisions are fair, transparent, and sustainable, so that grants have a lasting impact on communities.

  • What skills, background, or experience could you bring to the committee?

I bring a combination of practical experience, technical skills, and community engagement expertise that can benefit the committee. I have years of experience contributing to and coordinating Wikimedia projects across Northern Nigeria and Africa, I have also led campaigns such as Wiki Loves Folklore, Wiki Loves Monuments in Northern Nigeria, Wiki Loves Africa, and served as a jury member for Wiki Loves Earth, where I evaluated submissions for quality and impact.

Beyond content creation, I have a background in telecommunications, media, and technology, which helps me approach problems analytically and find practical solutions for community challenges. I am skilled in mentoring new contributors, facilitating collaborations, and translating knowledge into local languages, which strengthens inclusivity and participation.

Most importantly, I have deep grassroots knowledge of Northern Nigerian communities and an understanding of the barriers they face, including language diversity, limited resources, and security challenges. This experience allows me to evaluate proposals with empathy and long-term impact in mind, ensuring that funding supports sustainable growth and meaningful community development.

With this combination of technical expertise, movement experience, and community insight, I am confident I can contribute effectively to the committee’s work and help guide grantmaking in ways that are fair, strategic, and impactful.

  • How would you ensure equity in allocating funding to diverse communities?

I would ensure equity by making sure every community has a fair chance to access funding, taking into account their unique circumstances. This means supporting smaller, emerging, or underrepresented communities, as well as established ones, Equity isn’t about treating everyone the same, it’s about providing the support each community needs to succeed and grow.

  • How would you ensure transparency and fairness in decision-making?

To ensure transparency and fairness, I would make sure that every step of the decision-making process is clear and understandable. This starts with using consistent and well-defined criteria so that all proposals are judged by the same standards. I would also declare and manage any conflicts of interest to avoid bias.

I believe it’s important to explain decisions in simple language, so applicants know why their proposals were accepted or not, and what could be improved next time. Regular and respectful communication with all applicants helps build trust and shows that their efforts are valued.

Finally, I would encourage open documentation and shared learning within the committee, so everyone can see how decisions were reached, learn from past experiences, and improve the process over time. This approach not only makes funding decisions fair, but also strengthens trust and engagement across communities, ensuring that everyone feels included and respected.

  • Can you commit to the expected time requirements?

Yes, I can fully commit to the expected time requirements. I am organized, reliable, and motivated to dedicate the necessary time to participate actively in the committee’s work, contribute thoughtfully to discussions, and support decision-making processes. I understand the responsibilities involved and am prepared to prioritize this role to ensure meaningful and consistent engagement.

 Saifullahi AS
  • Which Nigerian state are you based in?
  • Katsina State
  • Tell us about yourself and why you want to join the NNFP Committee.
  • I am Saifullahi, a Wikimedia volunteer, community organizer and facilitator.

My work focuses on program management, content development, and capacity building, particularly through Wikimedia editing training and mentoring of new contributors. Through this experience, I have developed a strong understanding of the barriers that limit participation in the Wikimedia movement, such as limited access to resources, skills gaps, and structural challenges affecting grassroots contributors. I am interested in joining the Wikimedia Nigeria National Funding Program Committee because I believe effective, transparent, and community-informed funding processes are essential to strengthening Wikimedia communities in Nigeria. Serving on this committee will allow me to contribute to fair proposal review, responsible resource allocation, and decision-making that prioritises impact and sustainability. I am particularly motivated by the committee’s role in advancing inclusivity and knowledge equity. If selected, I will work to support funding decisions that expand opportunities for underrepresented communities, sustainable and impactful projects, encourage capacity development, and ensure that national resources are distributed in a way that reflects both local contexts and Wikimedia’s long-term goals. I see this role as an opportunity to serve the wider Nigerian Wikimedia community and advance our commitment to knowledge equity.

    • What is your current participation in the Wikimedia movement or the Free Knowledge Ecosystem?
    • I am actively contributing to the Wikimedia movement largely through community organizing, facilitation of Wikimedia editing events and through actual editing and creating content on Wikipedia, with a particular focus on health topics since I am a health professional. I regularly contribute well-sourced health articles to expand access to reliable information, particularly in Hausa where there’s dearth of Health content editors, helping bridge knowledge gaps for the area.

The contribution goes beyond editing and community organizing; however, I advocate for health content creation and literacy within and outside Wikimedia projects. This includes mentoring new editors, organizing workshops, and encouraging community members to contribute health-related content online, while also promoting awareness of Wikimedia and the free knowledge movement. Through these activities, I aim to strengthen access to trustworthy health information, build contributor capacity, and support the broader goal of knowledge equity in the Wikimedia movement. I am an advocate for knowledge equity, actively working to bridge gaps in underrepresented communities, including women and youth. My contributions have been recognized within the Hausa community, where I was awarded a scholarship to attend the 2025 Wikimania conference in Nairobi, Kenya.

    • How do you think you could contribute to the committee's role and ways of working?
    • I will contribute to the Committee by bringing my experience in grant assessment, community facilitation, and inclusive decision-making to support fair and impact-driven allocation of resources.

Through my work with underrepresented communities, particularly the Wikimedia projects I have volunteered in, I have developed a strong understanding of the challenges faced by emerging community leaders, including resource limitations, capacity gaps, and project sustainability. This perspective will enable me to support funding decisions that prioritise knowledge equity and meaningful participation, especially for marginalised groups, women, and youth. I will also contribute to transparent and accountable committee processes by applying best practices in proposal review and clear documentation. My previous experience as a volunteer Data Support Grant committee member in the Hausa community has equipped me to uphold inclusiveness and build trust in funding deliberations. Additionally, I will prioritise projects that demonstrate learning, sustainability, and reusability, supporting initiatives with realistic goals and openly documented outcomes that can benefit the wider Wikimedia community.

    • How do you think the committee could make decision-making more participatory?
    • One of the ways, I believe, is reducing centralisation and intentionally involving communities that are most affected by funding decisions. This includes creating structured opportunities for community input before and during funding cycles.

A key approach here is to establish regular community consultation and feedback mechanisms, such as open calls to gather input on funding priorities. Sharing assessment processes, eligibility criteria, and timelines openly like through Meta pages, community channels, and local-language communication platforms, would allow diverse communities to meaningfully influence decisions and benefit the whole Nigeria Wikimedia community. Transparency is also essential to participation. Publicly documenting decision-making processes and sharing summaries of proposal assessments can help community members understand how decisions are reached, reducing distance and building trust in the committee’s work. Finally, participation can be strengthened through capacity building. Providing mentorship for first-time applicants and clear, accessible guidance will enable more community members to engage confidently and meaningfully in the national funding process.

    • How do you think the committee could improve grantmaking so it has a greater impact?
    • To improve grant-making and achieve greater impact, the committee should approach funding not only as a financial function but as a strategic tool for strengthening the Wikimedia movement and supporting continuous learning. Grant-making should intentionally advance knowledge equity, community sustainability, and long-term capacity development.

One key approach is to prioritise proposals that address knowledge gaps and expand participation from underrepresented communities or where alternative funding is not readily available. This includes supporting local-language content creation, leadership development, and contributor capacity building, particularly in regions with limited access to resources. Such an approach directly advances the movement’s knowledge equity mission. In addition, the committee should assess proposals based on the scale and quality of impact rather than activity counts alone. Evaluating projects on long-term outcomes, sustainability, contributor retention, and content quality will encourage applicants to design initiatives with lasting value. Grant-making impact can also be strengthened through closer monitoring and learning-focused evaluation of funded projects. Clear impact indicators and structured follow-up will help ensure alignment between approved proposals and project implementation, while also generating insights for future funding cycles. Additionally, the committee can increase impact by encouraging collaboration and resource sharing as core funding criteria. Supporting initiatives that foster partnerships across user groups and communities will reduce duplication, improve quality, and extend the reach and accountability of funded activities.

    • How can the committee influence the grantmaking process to have a greater impact?
    • The committee can influence the grantmaking process to achieve greater impact by setting clear strategic priorities, strengthening evaluation standards, and embedding learning and accountability into every funding cycle.

First, the committee can shape impact by defining and communicating funding priorities that align with the Wikimedia Foundation 2030 Strategy, particularly around knowledge equity, underrepresented communities, and community sustainability. Clear priorities guide applicants to design proposals that address real gaps rather than isolated activities. Second, the committee can influence impact through strong evaluation frameworks. By emphasising long-term outcomes, such as contributor retention, content quality, leadership development, and reusability of outputs, the committee can shift grantmaking away from activity-based metrics toward sustainable movement growth. The committee can also increase impact by embedding learning into the grantmaking process. This includes encouraging documentation of lessons learned, sharing successful models across communities, and using insights from past grants to inform future funding decisions. Finally, the committee can strengthen impact through accountability and trust-building. Transparent decision-making, clear feedback to applicants, and responsible conflict-of-interest management will improve confidence in the process and motivate higher-quality proposals, ultimately increasing the effectiveness of funded initiatives.

    • What skills, background, or experience could you bring to the committee?
    • I bring a combination of practical experience in grant-making, community facilitation, and capacity building, as well as a deep commitment to knowledge equity. I am an active Wikipedia editor and as a volunteer community facilitator in the Hausa community, I have supported proposal development, project reporting, and mentoring new contributors, giving me insight into the challenges faced by underrepresented communities in the Wikimedia movement.

I have also served previously on the Hausa community Data Support Grant Committee, where I participated in proposal review, assessment, and funding decision-making. This experience has equipped me to evaluate proposals critically, assess potential impact, and ensure alignment with community needs and Wikimedia values. Additionally, my work in training, content development, and leadership development has strengthened my ability to support Wikimedia capacity building and empower contributors, particularly women and youth. I am confident that these skills and experiences will allow me to contribute effectively to the Nigerian National Funding Program Committee by promoting inclusive, fair, and impact-driven funding decisions.

9. How will you ensure equity in allocating funding to diverse communities? Ensuring equity in funding allocation is essential to advancing the Wikimedia 2030 mission. I will focus on addressing structural imbalances that limit participation by less privileged communities, prioritising proposals that serve underrepresented language groups and marginalized populations. My approach will emphasise fairness over strict equality, allocating resources based on need, capacity, and potential impact. This ensures that communities with less experience in grant writing or limited access to resources are not disadvantaged by the processes. Additionally, I will advocate for reducing language and accessibility barriers by simplifying application requirements and, where possible, providing guidance in local languages. These measures will help ensure that diverse communities can participate meaningfully and benefit equitably from Wikimedia funding.

    • How would you ensure equity in allocating funding to diverse communities?
    • I will ensure transparency and fairness, and support the committee to do the same, by aligning all decisions with ethics and the fundamental values of the Wikimedia movement, that’s collaboration, inclusion, human diversity. I will ensure we make the grant processes fully accessible and understandable to the community. This includes clearly documenting and publicly sharing guiding principles, evaluation criteria, and how decisions are made, including how equity and impact are considered.

To promote fairness, I will encourage collective decision-making within the committee, ensuring that proposals are assessed collaboratively against transparent, community-informed criteria. Whenever possible, the authority to approve or decline proposals should be distributed across multiple committee members, reducing bias and reinforcing accountability.

    • How do you think you could contribute to the committee's role and ways of working?
I can contribute to the committee by bringing my experience in leading projects, mentoring volunteers, and coordinating community activities. Through my work with Africa Wiki Women and the IG Commons Hub, I have learned how to support contributors, understand their needs, and help them participate confidently.

I can help the committee communicate clearly with applicants and grantees, support decision-making processes, and make sure that funding is allocated in a way that is fair, inclusive, and meets the needs of different communities across Nigeria. My experience in organizing projects and mentoring volunteers will allow me to contribute to the committee’s work effectively and support its goals.

    • How do you think the committee could make decision-making more participatory?

The committee can make decision-making more participatory by involving the wider community at different stages. For example, they could ask volunteers, project leads, or regional representatives to give input on proposals before decisions are finalized. They could use surveys, group discussions, or open meetings to gather ideas and feedback from contributors. The committee can also share draft decisions or updates and invite comments from the community, so people feel their voices are heard and considered. By listening to different perspectives and making the process transparent, the committee can ensure decisions reflect the needs of diverse communities across Nigeria.

    • How do you think the committee could improve grantmaking so it has a greater impact?

The committee could improve grantmaking by connecting new grantees with experienced ones who can guide them through implementation and reporting. It should fund training programs that teach communities how to manage projects and sustain their work, not just fund one-time projects. The committee should regularly talk to Nigerian Wikimedia communities to understand what they actually need, so grants solve real problems. Making the application process simpler for small grants would help more grassroots communities participate. Encouraging user groups to work together on proposals would help them share resources and create bigger impact across regions.

    • How can the committee influence the grantmaking process to have a greater impact?

The committee can influence grantmaking by pushing for flexible funding that lets communities adjust their plans as they learn what works. Sharing decision criteria and examples of good proposals publicly would help people understand how to apply successfully. The committee should check funding patterns to make sure grants reach different parts of Nigeria, including underrepresented regions and language communities. Connecting Nigerian grantees with regional and international Wikimedia groups would create opportunities for learning and collaboration. Finally, the committee should value community-building and mentorship work, not just count edits and uploads, because these create long-term change.

    • What skills, background, or experience could you bring to the committee?

I bring experience in leading projects, mentoring volunteers, and coordinating community initiatives. Through my work with Africa Wiki Women and the IG Commons Hub, I have organized campaigns, trained contributors, and guided volunteers to create high-quality content. My background in mass communication helps me explain ideas clearly, write reports, and share information in ways that are easy to understand. All of these skills and experiences will help me support the committee in reviewing proposals, guiding applicants, and ensuring that decisions benefit the community.

    • How would you ensure equity in allocating funding to diverse communities?

I would ensure equity by making sure that funding reaches communities that are often underrepresented or face barriers to participation. This means looking at proposals not only for their quality, but also for the potential to support projects that fill gaps and meet real community needs. I would also make an effort to understand the context of different communities, including their size, location, and resources, so that funding decisions are fair and inclusive. From my experience mentoring contributors, I have seen that people participate more confidently when they feel supported and their voices are considered. The committee can do the same by listening to different perspectives, balancing funding across regions and communities, and prioritizing projects that create meaningful impact for everyone.

    • How would you ensure transparency and fairness in decision-making?

I would ensure transparency by making the process clear and open to everyone. This means explaining how decisions are made, what criteria are used to review proposals, and how funding priorities are set. To ensure fairness, I would advocate that all proposals are reviewed without bias. This means looking at the project's merit and community impact rather than favoring familiar names or well-established groups. I would also make sure we actively consider applications from different regions, languages, and community sizes across Nigeria, not just the most visible communities. Drawing from my experience as a jury member for Wiki Loves campaigns and my work coordinating projects across diverse communities, I understand that fair decisions require listening to different perspectives. I would encourage the committee to discuss proposals collectively, bringing our different experiences and regional knowledge to avoid individual biases.

  • My name is Chinonso Chidi. I'm a Medical Laboratory Scientist, researcher, Wikimedian since 2020, dedicated to promoting free knowledge, and an advocate for cultural heritage and indigenous language preservation. Having benefited from and supported numerous Wikimedia funded projects, I'm interested in joining the NNFP Committee to help ensure that Wikimedia funding in Nigeria remains mission-aligned, impactful and equitable, meeting the needs of communities. My motivation is to strengthen a more transparent and inclusive grantmaking system.
    • What is your current participation in the Wikimedia movement or the Free Knowledge Ecosystem?
    • I am an administrator on the Igbo Wikipedia and Igbo Wiktionary, and a rollbacker on Wikidata. I belong to the Igbo Wikimedians User Group, Wikimedia User Group Nigeria, WikiProject Medicine, Wiki Mentor Africa, Small Wiki Monitoring Team (SWMT), and a Liaison of the Volunteer Support network (VSN). I'm also on the Wiki Loves Monuments International (WLM-i) team; a Wiki Loves Africa 2026 Ambassador, and a member of the Wikidata Weekly Summary Team. I serve as Programs Manager in the Igbo Wiki Fan Clubs (IMSU & ALVAN) and in the Wikimedia Abuja Network. As a volunteer editor with over 200 article creations on the English Wikipedia, I'm also a technical contributor to Wikimedia tool development and technical documentation. I've served as a jury member in several photography contests. I remain an event organizer with several impactful projects including the Igbo Wiki Days 2025, The 72 Hours virtual marathon edit-a-thon, Nigerian Legislators Translation Project, Wikidata 12th and 13th birthday celebrations in the Igbo community, and SheSaid 2025 in Nigeria. My work is defined by volunteer editing, event organizing, community capacity building, youth engagement, and promoting both regional and global collaborations.
    • How do you think you could contribute to the committee's role and ways of working?
    • By offering my deep understanding of Nigerian communities. I'm also great at clearly analyzing grant proposals and adopting a collaborative approach to make decisions. I'd support the committee in making sure we uphold accountability, while also providing support for grant applicants (both old and new).
    • How do you think the committee could make decision-making more participatory?
    • By establishing clear communication systems, and regular feedback sessions or surveys with local communities at different grant cycles. This ensures a better understanding of funding priorities and guidelines, and in turn, provide an opportunity to learn about the diversity, address challenges, and gain information that could inform funding decisions going forward.
    • How do you think the committee could improve grant-making so it has a greater impact?
    • By placing huge priority on quality over quantity. Mentorship, capacity building in grant application and reporting, project sustainability and clear documentation should be greatly emphasized to obtain greater impact. Also, I recommend the committee to support projects focused on documenting and promoting Nigerian indigenous language and culture.
    • How can the committee influence the grantmaking process to have a greater impact?
    • The committee could consider supporting proposals focused on capacity building, with clearly defined and mission-aligned goals, and measurable outcomes. Sustainability is key, therefore, more long-term projects should be encouraged rather than one-off projects. Also, impact can be amplified by encouraging more local community collaborations and supporting underrepresented groups.
    • What skills, background, or experience could you bring to the committee?
    • I bring a wealth of experience in program design, grant implementation and reporting, global community facilitation, and effective communication. My background in research, project evaluation, and community leadership, combined with a strong knowledge of Wikimedia policies, language and cultural diversities in Nigerian communities, would be valuable to the committee.
    • How would you ensure equity in allocating funding to diverse communities?
    • Not all communities have the same level of resources, experience, or visibility, so in addition to a well-thought proposal, I'd like to focus on the realities behind it. I would advocate for funding decisions that recognize first-time applicants, structural barriers, build local capacity, and genuinely meet community needs. Opportunities and resources would be spread across communities, not just a particular group or region.
    • How would you ensure transparency and fairness in decision-making?
    • By being intentional, open to give and receive constructive feedback, abide to committee guidelines, and maintain accountability at every stage of the process. I value honesty and will be more than willing to openly declare conflict of interest at any point. • Application for the Nigeria National Funding Program (NNFP) Committee

1. Which Nigerian state are you based in? I am based in plateau state, Nigeria.

2. Tell us about yourself and why you want to join the NNFP Committee. I am a linguist in training and digital editor with the tyap wikimedian user group deeply committed to the principles of knowledge equity and open collaboration. My work with tyap wikimedian user group,in Kaduna state a region celebrated as the "center of learning," is centred on leveraging digital tools to document our rich cultural heritage, diverse languages, and complex history. I want to join the NNFP Committee to directly bridge the gap between strategic funding and impactful, community-led initiatives on the ground. I am motivated by the NNFP's core mission of enabling timely and flexible funding decisions by people who intimately understand the Nigerian context. I believe my grassroots experience and understanding of our unique socio-cultural landscape will be valuable in ensuring the committee’s grantmaking is both equitable and effective, truly serving the underrepresented communities within Nigeria's Wikimedia region.

3. What is your current participation in the Wikimedia movement or the Free Knowledge Ecosystem? My participation is firmly rooted contributing free knowledge by editing article and also in activating local communities. I co-found and facilitate training workshops for new editors in Jos and surrounding communiti during tyap community outreaches, focusing on creating and improving Wikipedia content about Kaduna state geography, notable personalities, and indigenous festivals. I actively collaborate with local historians and cultural custodians to document oral histories and translate key articles into local languages. This hands-on involvement provides me with a clear, practical understanding of the opportunities, challenges, and resource needs of growing the free knowledge movement from the grassroots level in Nigeria.

4. How do you think you could contribute to the committee's role and ways of working? I would contribute a community-centric perspective, ensuring that the committee’s deliberations remain connected to the realities of grant applicants. I can help assess proposals not only for their strategic merit but also for their local feasibility, cultural sensitivity, and potential for sustainable community impact. I am a firm believer in the "wiki way" of working—collaborative, transparent, and built on constructive dialogue. I would strive to foster a committee culture where respectful debate and empathetic feedback are standard practice, ensuring our final decisions are robust, inclusive, and clearly communicated.

5. How do you think the committee could make decision-making more participatory? The committee can institutionalise participation by moving beyond a closed review process. Firstly, we can host structured community consultations prior to finalising grant rounds to understand regional priorities. Secondly, we can adopt a model of transparent, public commentary on Meta-Wiki for shortlisted proposals, allowing the broader community to offer insights, similar to global Wikimedia Foundation processes. Finally, we can proactively share summaries of our decisions and the reasoning behind them, creating a feedback loop that builds trust and demonstrates that community input directly shapes outcomes.

6. How do you think the committee could improve grantmaking so it has a greater impact? To maximise impact, grantmaking must be empowering, not just transactional. The committee should prioritise funding that builds long-term capacity, such as projects that include mentorship components or skill-building for new organisers. We should also encourage and support innovative pilot projects that test new approaches to content gaps or community engagement, with a focus on learning and sharing results. Crucially, we must work with grantees to define clear, realistic metrics for success that measure tangible outcomes—like the number of newly trained, retained editors or the quality and reach of created content—rather than just activity outputs.

7. What skills, background, or experience could you bring to the committee? I bring direct experience in grassroots community mobilisation, project management for cultural preservation, and navigating the diverse ethnic and religious landscape of Kaduna State with sensitivity and respect. My background includes managing volunteer-driven projects, administering modest budgets, and mediating community discussions to find common ground. This is complemented by a practical understanding of knowledge equity as the active process of including marginalised voices and narratives in the digital record.

8. How could you ensure equity in allocating funds? Ensuring equity requires intentional design. I would advocate for the committee to establish and publish clear equity criteria—such as prioritising first-time applicants, specific geographic regions, or underrepresented language projects—alongside standard evaluation metrics. We must conduct proactive outreach to communities less familiar with Wikimedia funding, simplifying application materials and offering support. Furthermore, the committee’s own composition and review process should mandate conscious consideration of these equity lenses during every decision.

9. How would you balance equity in sharing funds based on religion or ethnicity? In a diverse nation like Nigeria, fairness means being consciously inclusive while focusing on the universal mission of free knowledge. The committee should allocate funds based on demonstrable need, community capacity, and project merit, not on religious or ethnic quotas. However, we must actively identify and dismantle systemic barriers that may prevent certain groups from applying or succeeding. This involves ensuring our outreach, communication, and support mechanisms are accessible and welcoming to all, thereby creating a level playing field where the best ideas from every community can thrive based on their contribution to knowledge, not their demographics.

10. Can you commit to the expected time requirements? Yes, I fully understand and can commit to the expected time investment for committee meetings, thorough proposal review, and related duties for the duration of the term.

  • Tell us about yourself and why you want to join the NNFP Committee.
    • My name is Marcus Sunday Avong (user @sunnyavong). I hail from an from Zangon Kataf Local Government area but born and bred in Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State. I am an active member of the Tyap Wikimedian User Group. In addition, i have been actively involved in promoting the sustenance of my local dialect and it's identity in a world where it is seemingly going extinct. The group is aimed at sharing to the world what the Atyap nation is, what it stands for and the history of same. It has since gathered about 6,000 members from around the world. I advocate also for the promotion of local contents in a sustainable manner because I firmly believe that the future generation must not be made to lose out of touch with history.

My intention to join the NNFP Committee is borne out of my desire to unlearn, learn and relearn. I have discovered that as a Nigerian, I must understand the complexities that exits in the country. Such complexities includes tribal differences, ethnic differences and religious differences must be taken advantage of to foster unity in diversity. Therefore, I am fully convinced that giving the opportunity to be in the NNFP Committee would give me the opportunity to meet people of like minds to share knowledge and promote national unity through collaboration. In addition, I am interested in getting trained as stated on the advertisement of this program. Also, I do believe that I have a lot of positive contributions to make that would be beneficial to the committee and the country at large drown from my large scale experiences gained over the years. • What is your current participation in the Wikimedia movement or the Free Knowledge Ecosystem?
    • Currently, I am an active member of the Tyap Wikimedians User Group. Here, we work to develop and promote the Tyap language. In developing the Tyap language, I have participated in discussions around translations and creating of new words that were not in existence during the times of our parents, grandparents. We work both remotely and physicaly to make sure that the Tyap language gains sustainability among the young people in urban areas who find speaking the language difficult. Also, in the Free Knowledge Ecosystem, I have been active on the social media in promoting everything the

Atyap culture and Tyap language stands for. Thus, I created the the Facebook Forum known as "History, Culture and Traditions of the Atyap People of Southern Kaduna" as a means of disseminating free, precise, trustworthy information about the Atyap people freely to the world. Also, I have volunteered with DeBranch farmers, an agro-based company in Kaduna to help promote modern agricultural practices around some Atyap and not Atyap villages. My participation here is basically translation in Tyap language during training and seminars organized by the organization. Debranch farmers recently received an award of excellence from the Kaduna State Government. As a result of their giant strides, the present minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari paid a visit to the orgnisation's factory in Kaduna in November, 2024.

    • How do you think you could contribute to the committee's role and ways of working?
    • In my opinion and humble thinking, I can contribute to the committee's role and ways of working in the following ways

1. I have worked and served as a volunteer where I contributed immensely in their operations. I have gained experience that would be good for me to easily adopt to the tasks I may be required to perform by the committee. 2. I can contribute my vast knowledge on social media to promote the activities of the committee as the case may be. 3. The committee can be sure to have my strong mobilization skills as a key contribution. While working with DeBranch Famers, and strategically mobilized both within and without for the achievement of certain organizational function effectively 4. In the Tyap Wikimedians User Group, we were trained on active and effective participation, development and promotion. I will help the committee to develop strategies that focuses on key policies, strengthening contents and sustainability as key indicators for national development 5. I will make researches, in addition to my experiences and make proposals to the committee in aspects of collaboration with relevant stakeholders for effectiveness in value chain attainment 6. As a team player, i would ensure that I fulfill every given task within time limit without complain and without supervision in line the the committee's goals and values

    • How do you think the committee could make decision-making more participatory?
    • Effective participation in decision making in every organization is key to the possibility and ability of the organization to achieve set goals and objectives as the case may be. Therefore, the committee can make decision-making more participatory, through the following ways;

1. The committee must ensure that every member understands what it stands for. There must be a clear definition and statement of Mission for every member to understand because this helps performance and participation. 2. Also, members of the committee must be made to understand that they are a team working towards the attainment of the same goal. Efforts must be made to avoid discrimination of whatever kind and every member must be seen as important as the other. When people feel they are appreciated and accepted, they participate well in decision making especially in a multi-ethinc committee of this nature 3. For members to participate effectively in decision making, they must be given the chance to participate in policy making. During policy making, members happen to effectively give in their opinions. This gives a foundation for future contribution when decisions are to be made 4. In addition, for the committee to make decision making more participatory, the roles must be distinctively shared for effective participation. When people effectively participate in roles, they understand constraints and strengths therein and conveniently say what affects them and how they can be made better

    • How do you think the committee could improve grantmaking so it has a greater impact?
    • In my previous volunteer work with DeBranch farmers, I interacted closely with locals and people down the agricultural value chain. Many have benefited from grants from different organizations and in my opinion, the committee could improve grantmaking to have greter impact in the following ways;

1. For grantmaking to be effective, it must be used for the purpose it is given for. Most Nigerians see grant as their own part of the national cake, thus, when they receive, the use such for unproductive ventures. Therefore, the committee could organize seminars and trainings. Here, participants would be made to provide feasible and viable business plans. These plans must be scrutinized and found worthwhile before grants are provided. In addition, there must be strict supervision on implementation 2. Grants should not be given to individuals or organizations in a lumbsum. It should be given in trenches depending on the beneficiaries strict adherence to their business plan as may be advised by the supervisor. 3. The committee can do well to also scrutinize applicants for grants. There are some people that do not necessarily need these grants but want to get same for selfish reasons. As such, the committee can partner with banks structures to factor out those that need such grants and those that do not. The easiest way is through the use of the Bank Verification Number. it the BVN reveals that the applicant's income exceeds a certain range, such grants should not be given to them. 4. The committee can also reward hard work and productivity. Once investigation shows that there is a significant improvement by certain applicants, they can be encouraged with grants as a means of telling them that their efforts are recognized and to tell others that there is reward for hard work 5. For grants to be impactful, also, the committee should ensure that every part of the country benefits without discrimination. This pushes, to a high degree, the confidence of the people on the ability of the committee to deliver

Akintundedaniel

  • Which Nigerian state are you based in?
  • I am based in Kwara State, Nigeria.
  • Tell us about yourself and why you want to join the NNFP Committee.

My name is Akintunde Daniel and I am an active member of the Wikimedia community in Nigeria and a product of the Wikimedia Ilorin community, where I have contributed to community growth, coordination, and program delivery. My involvement over the 3+ years of volunteering has gone beyond individual contributions to include leadership and governance responsibilities within the group.

I served the Wikimedia Ilorin community in two leadership capacities: as General Secretary and as a Vice President in two different tenures. In these roles, I supported committee operations, coordinated communication among members, documented decisions and processes, and helped ensure continuity and accountability in community activities. I also worked closely with other leaders to support volunteers, align initiatives with community goals, and create an environment where both newcomers and experienced contributors could participate effectively.

Through my experiences, I developed a strong interest in structured decision-making, collaborative leadership, and the importance of clear processes in sustaining volunteer communities. I have been involved in discussions around planning, prioritization, and resource use, which has given me practical insight into how governance and funding decisions directly affect participation, equity, and impact at the community level.

My reason for applying to join the NNFP Committee because I want to keep serving the Wikimedia community in Nigeria at a stewardship level, with one key motivation, which is to keep supporting fair, transparent, and context-aware funding decisions that strengthen Wikimedia communities in Nigeria.

  • What is your current participation in the Wikimedia movement or the Free Knowledge Ecosystem?

I am currently an active Wikimedia community organizer, contributor, and coordinator, with practical experience supporting community-led projects and inclusive participation across Nigeria. My involvement includes working closely with volunteers to plan, coordinate, and sustain programs that lower barriers to entry and encourage meaningful participation from both newcomers and experienced contributors.

Alongside community organizing, I remain engaged as a contributor and advocate within the broader Free Knowledge ecosystem, with a growing interest in how resourcing, governance, and inclusive decision-making can strengthen Wikimedia communities at scale.

  • How do you think you could contribute to the committee's role and ways of working?

I believe I can contribute to the committee’s role and ways of working by bringing a strong balance of community context, structured thinking, and collaborative decision-making.

From my experience as a community organizer and coordinator, I am accustomed to working within committees where listening, clarity, and respectful disagreement are essential. I approach discussions with an openness to different perspectives, while grounding my contributions in evidence, regional context, and the stated goals of a process. This allows me to support thoughtful deliberation rather than rushed or subjective decisions.

I can also contribute by helping bridge understanding between applicants, grantees, and grant officers. Having supported community-led projects directly, I understand common challenges around planning, communication, and sustainability, and can help the committee assess proposals not only on intent but on feasibility and potential impact.

  • How do you think the committee could make decision-making more participatory?

One important approach that I have observed over the years that would work is to create consistent feedback loops with applicants and community groups, especially during and after grant cycles. This could include clearer guidance before applications are submitted, transparent communication around decision criteria, and constructive feedback that helps applicants improve, even when proposals are not approved.

  • How do you think the committee could improve grantmaking so it has a greater impact?

The committee can improve grantmaking impact by prioritizing clarity, sustainability, and learning across grant cycles.

This includes funding proposals with clear goals, realistic plans, and measurable outcomes; providing constructive feedback that helps applicants strengthen their work; and using insights from past grants to inform future decisions. Stronger follow-up, shared learning, and attention to regional context will ensure resources translate into lasting community capacity, not just short-term activity.

  • How can the committee influence the grantmaking process to have a greater impact?

By giving clear priorities, applying consistent decision criteria, and grounding decisions in the community context. The committee can influence impact by guiding applicants early, asking the right questions during review, and favoring proposals that build capacity, address real community gaps, and show potential for long-term value. Transparent feedback and shared learning across grant cycles further strengthen outcomes.

  • What skills, background, or experience could you bring to the committee?

I bring a combination of Wikimedia community leadership, project coordination, grant writing, and grant proposal research. Having served as General Secretary and Vice President of Wikimedia Ilorin, I am skilled in governance, committee operations, and collaborative decision-making.

My practical experience in supporting community-led projects, mentoring volunteers, and promoting inclusive participation has given me insight into regional needs, effective processes, and strategies to make grants more impactful.

  • How would you ensure equity in allocating funding to diverse communities?

I would ensure equity by making decisions in context, assessing proposals based on need, potential impact, and inclusivity rather than familiarity or popularity. I would actively consider underrepresented groups and provide guidance and feedback to help all applicants compete fairly.

  • How would you ensure transparency and fairness in decision-making?

I would ensure transparency and fairness by applying consistent criteria to all proposals, documenting deliberations, and clearly communicating decisions and rationale to applicants.

    • How can the committee influence the grantmaking process to have a greater impact?
    • Greater impact can be achieved by prioritizing capacity building and sustainability, setting transparent evaluation standards, encouraging innovation and ensuing funds are allocated to initiatives with clear goals, measurable outcome and community relevance.

Greater impact I can also be achieve by regular reflection on past grant, recognizing security risks, infrastructural limits, especially for marginalized communities. Flexible funding models, realistic timelines, and support for community care can significantly strengthen outcomes and retention.

    • What skills, background, or experience could you bring to the committee?
    • I will bring skills in program coordination, communication, report writing and community engagement. My academic background in Geography and Education gives me a strong understanding of development issues, learning process and community dynamics, which are valuable in accessing proposal and supporting grants.

My experience as a church coordinator (Junior Church) and experience with Wikimedia projects has enable me to contribute strategically to the community ensuring transparent and impactful funding decisions, which I will also bring to the committee.

    • How would you ensure equity in allocating funding to diverse communities?
    • I would advocate for equity funding by ensuring proposals are accessed fairly based on impact and need and community context, rather than visibility or location alone. I would support outreach to underrepresented and encourage proposals, that address regional, gender and capacity gaps.
This means supporting emerging groups, regional communities, and marginalized identities with fair consideration, mentorship, and flexibility rather than holding them to the same expectations as long-established groups.
    • How would you ensure transparency and fairness in decision-making?
    • Transparency and fairness can be ensured by clear criteria, documenting agreed decisions clearly, declaring conflicts of interest and communicating outcomes openly.

I will ensure that applicants understand why decisions were made and deliberations can be improved, with consistent feedback. Fairness is not only about outcomes but about trust—and trust is built when processes are open, respectful, and accountable.

    • Can you commit to the expected time requirements?
    • Yes, I can commit to the expected time requirements, and actively participate in multiple Wikimedia projects, community activities, and freelance work. Below are links to the training coordinated by me
