Statement of the Arabic Wikimedia Community Regarding the 2025 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees Election

The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees elections are currently taking place, with candidates competing for two open seats. The Arabic-speaking community is strongly interested in this election and is participating actively as part of the global Wikimedia movement. Among the candidates was user Ravan from the Arabic community. However, on October 3, 2025, only five days before the beginning of the elections, the community was surprised by the disqualification of Ravan from the list of candidates without any clear explanation for this decision. This coincided with a media campaign against Ravan for her public support of the Palestinian cause, particularly during the ongoing war. Another candidate, Lane Rasberry from the United States, was also excluded from the election without any explanation.

For this reason, we —the undersigned members and Arabic Wikimedia affiliates— issue this statement.

The Arabic-speaking Wikimedia community strongly condemns the Wikimedia Foundation’s decision to exclude our colleague Ravan from the election, especially given the lack of transparency surrounding the reasons for this action. This decision has left us feeling that the Foundation disregards and undervalues the Arabic community, its views, and its reactions. There have been previous major decisions made without sufficient or satisfactory explanations, which required our community significant time to recover from. This situation has shaken our confidence in the principle of transparency that Wikimedia claims to uphold. When we became aware of the exclusion of Ravan and Lane Rasberry without any stated reasons, we began to question whether transparency even exists within the Foundation’s governance practices.

Ravan’s exclusion came in parallel with a coordinated media campaign launched by biased and politically motivated outlets attacking her for the personal and humanitarian stance she took on the Palestinian issue and the genocide in Gaza. As Arabic Wikimedians, we chose not to escalate the matter at the time, trusting that the Foundation would not be influenced by such questionable attacks and that it would be aware of their motives. Yet, to our astonishment, the Foundation’s decision to exclude Ravan came exactly when that media campaign was at its peak, leading many of us to wonder whether the Foundation had been pressured or influenced by that campaign to remove her from the election because of her public support for Palestine and the people of Gaza.

We—the undersigned individuals and Arabic Wikimedia affiliates—declare our boycott of the 2025 Board of Trustees election. We also demand that the Wikimedia Foundation disclose the reasons behind the exclusion of Ravan and Lane Rasberry from the election. We request that the Foundation respond within one week with an official explanation. If the Foundation ignores this protest and fails to respond within the given time, we will proceed to discuss further escalation measures until a clear and satisfactory response is provided to this legitimate inquiry. The Wikimedia Foundation has long emphasized its commitment to good governance and transparency, as well as to gender equity. Yet, by excluding Ravan—the only female candidate in this election—without any clear explanation and amid strong indications of political bias, the Foundation has violated all of these principles.

In conclusion, the Arabic-speaking Wikimedia community calls upon the Foundation to consider the views and positions of its members when making decisions that affect them or their representatives. This request represents not a privilege, but a fundamental right for all Wikimedia communities and contributors. In the spirit of transparency, we await the Foundation’s response regarding what has occurred in this election.

بيان من الويكيميديين العرب حول انتخابات مجلس الأمناء 2025

تُقام هذه الأيام انتخابات مجلس أمناء مؤسسة ويكيميديا، حيث يتنافس المرشحون على مقعدين شاغرين، وللمجتمع العربي اهتمام كبير بهذه الانتخابات ويشارك فيها بفعالية باعتباره جزءًا من المجتمع العالمي لحركة ويكيميديا. كان من ضمن المرشحين في الانتخابات الزميلة رافان من المجتمع العربي، ولكن في الثالث من أكتوبر 2025، وقبل بداية الانتخابات بخمسة أيام فقط فوجئنا باستبعاد رافان من ضمن المرشحين دون إبداء أسباب واضحة لهذا القرار وتزامن هذا مع حملة إعلامية ضد رافان لموقفها الداعم للقضية الفلسطينية لا سيما في هذه الحرب القائمة. استُبعد أيضًا من الانتخابات لين راسبيري من الولايات المتحدة دون توضيح أسباب أخرى لاستبعاده كذلك.

من أجل هذا، أصدرنا -نحن المستخدمين العرب ومجموعات المستخدمين العربية الموقعة أدناه- هذا البيان.

يستنكر المجتمع العربي استنكارًا شديدًا ما جرى من استبعاد مؤسسة ويكيميديا للزميلة رافان من انتخابات مجلس الأمناء، لا سيما مع عدم إفصاح المؤسسة عن أسباب هذا القرار، مما أعطانا شعورًا بأن المؤسسة لا تكترث ولا تأبه بالمجتمع العربي ولا تعطي لآرائه ولا ردات فعله أية أهمية، مع وقوع سوابق من قبل لقرارات كبرى ومؤثرة دون الإفصاح ولو باليسير الشافي عن أسبابها، واحتاج المجتمع العربي إلى فترة زمنية كبيرة لكي يتعافى من آثارها، واهتز عندنا في هذا الوقت شعورنا بتحقق مبدأ الشفافية وتطبيقه في مشاريع ويكيميديا. عندما علمنا بقرار استبعاد رافان ولين راسبيري دون إعلان أي أسباب، صرنا نتشكك الآن في وجود هذا المبدأ من الأساس داخل المؤسسة.

ترافق قرار الاستبعاد مع حملة إعلامية منظمة أجرتها وسائل إعلامية منحازة ومؤدلجة ضد رافان لمواقفها الإنسانية والشخصية من القضية الفلسطينية والإبادة الجماعية في غزة، وعلى أننا -الويكيميديين العرب- فضلنا السكوت وقتئذ ولم نرغب أن نصعد من المسألة اعتقادًا منا بأن مثل هذه الحملات المشبوهة لن تؤثر على قرارات المؤسسة، وأن المؤسسة واعية بتلك التصرفات ودوافعها، فإذ بنا نتفاجأ باستبعاد المؤسسة لرافان من الانتخابات في توقيت متزامن مع تلك الحملة الإعلامية، وهذا جعل كثير منا يتساءل تلقائيًا عن مدى تأثر المؤسسة بذلك الهجوم الإعلامي ضد رافان، وإذا كان الهجوم الإعلامي على رافان لدعمها للقضية الفلسطينية وأهل غزة له دور في الضغط على المؤسسة لاستبعادها من تلك الانتخابات أم لا.

نعلن -نحن الأفراد ومجموعات المستخدمين العرب الموقعين على هذا البيان- عن مقاطعتنا لانتخابات مجلس الأمناء كما أننا نطالب مؤسسة ويكيميديا بالإفصاح عن الأسباب التي دفعتهم إلى استبعاد رافان ولين راسبيري من هذه الانتخابات، وننتظر رد المؤسسة خلال أسبوع للإفصاح لنا عن تلك الأسباب، وإن لم تهتم المؤسسة باحتجاجنا ولم تجبنا في خلال الأسبوع، فسنضطر إلى مناقشة إجراءات تصعيدية تالية إلى أن نحصل على إجابة شافية من المؤسسة على هذا التساؤل المشروع.

لطالما رأينا وسمعنا مؤسسة ويكيميديا تنادي بتطبيق مبادئ الحوكمة والشفافية، ولطالما رأيناها تدقق وتؤكد قدر استطاعتها على تقليل الفجوة بين الجنسين، فإذ بنا نشهد باستبعاد رافان انتهاكًا لكل هذه المبادئ التي تتردد على آذاننا في كل مكان، فرافان كانت المرأة الوحيدة ضمن المرشحين لهذا المجلس، وجرى استبعادها دون أسباب واضحة ومعلنة مع شبهة قوية عن وجود علاقة بين الاستبعاد والهجوم الذي أجرته وسائل إعلامية منحازة سياسيًا.

ختامًا فإن المجتمع العربي يعلن عن رغبته في أن تُوضع آراء أفراده ومواقفهم في عين الاعتبار عند اتخاذ مؤسسة ويكيميديا لأي قرار يتعلق به أو بأحد أفراده، وهذا الرجاء ما هو إلا حق أساسي لكل مجتمعات ويكيميديا وأفرادها لا المجتمع العربي وحده، وتحقيقًا لمبادئ الشفافية فإننا ننتظر رد المؤسسة بخصوص ما وقع في هذه الانتخابات.
