This is my report on the 2018/2019 Afrikaans Ontkiemingskompetisie
The Ontkiemingskompetisie was announced 2 weeks before the competition. We had a site-banner
during the competition which helped and looked nice.
We (Dumbassman, SpesBona and K175) decided to place a definition on a "saadjie". Any article that is smaller than 5000kb. So anyone first to take an article over that size is awarded a point.
An aim was to attract and retain new Wikipedia users. This did not happen. So it was a loyalty reward to active editors. Next time, I suggest having prizes for the first five.
Maroela Media are currently hosting a competition for new articles by teachers. They offer a R10
000 first prize. I have come in contact with Elana Barker about my interest to merge with their
competition next year.
My prediction was 300 “ontkiemde” articles. We reached 255 articles.
I learned about Pet scan, which is very powerful for limiting by size.
The Afrikaans writing competition was held from the 15 December 2018 to the 15 January 2019. It was held to attract and retain new Wikipedia editors whilst growing Afrikaans Wikipedia. During this period the team was made aware that another organisation (Maroela Media) was also hosting a writing competition targeted at Afrikaans teachers. This created an opportunity to work with an event partner in the future on this sort of activity.
