Open Knowledge: Wikimedia & Research in the CEE Region/Programme
What to expect from the programme?
[edit]The conference programme will include:
- Thursday 8 October: optional satellite activities from 16:00, followed by welcome dinner
- Friday 9 October: full day of sessions, followed by social dinner
- Saturday 10 October: sessions until 14:00, followed by lunch
Participants can expect:
- Presentations of research and Wikimedia-related projects (as oral presentations and posters)
- Workshops and practical sessions
- Discussion panels
- Interactive networking and brainstorming sessions.

Thematic tracks:
[edit]We aim to have a broad programme inclusive of many fields and disciplines. We have prepared suggested thematic tracks, but the final version of the programme will depend on the submissions themselves. Topics include:
- Quality, completeness and reliability of information on Wikimedia projects. Includes studies analysing the quality and coverage of Wikipedia articles, content bias, knowledge gaps, sources, reliability and verification processes.
- Education and higher education. Looking at Wikimedia as a resource for open education: Wikimedia-related educational initiatives in schools, libraries, and in higher education, working with students. Wikipedia as a tool for developing digital literacy.
- GLAM and cultural heritage. Research related to cultural institutions, Wikimedia projects as platforms for preserving and documenting cultural heritage. Collections as data.
- Media and information ecosystem, misinformation. The interplay between Wikimedia projects and the broader (open) knowledge ecosystem, including: Wikipedia's interaction with traditional media and other online platforms; Understanding the impact of AI on Wikimedia and the role of Wikimedia in AI development; The influence of Wikipedia on the formation of public opinion and media literacy; Efforts combating misinformation.
- Community models of knowledge creation. Studies of community dynamics, participation and decision making; Strategies for engaging new contributors and bridging research with communities; Understanding the activity, motivations, engagement models, incentives, and needs of Wikimedia editors, readers, and developers of Wikimedia projects; Space for people to present their project, praxis based, not necessarily research focused
- Technical innovations and tools. New technologies and initiatives to grow content, quality, equity, diversity, and participation across Wikimedia projects. Use of bots, algorithms, and crowdsourcing methods for content curation, sourcing, or verification of content and structured data. // Tools for automatic content creation and curation.
- Open data, open infrastructure, open science. Any other projects related to open science and knowledge democratisation.
- Other. If your submission does not fit into the above categories, please submit it in this category.
Invited speakers:
[edit]Dr Ana Slavec
[edit]University of Primorska, Slovenia
Dr. Ana Slavec is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technology and a research associate at the InnoRenew CoE at the Andrej Marušič Institute, both at the University of Primorska in Koper, Slovenia. She also leads the newly established Department of Open Science at the University Library. Her work focuses on applying statistics in sustainable building research and on research data management, with a strong interest in knowledge sharing and collaboration. She is currently the president of the Slovenian Open Science Community (SSOZ).
Dr Cezary Rosiński
[edit]Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland
Cezary Rosiński is a literary scholar, documentalist, and data specialist at the Current Bibliography Department and the Digital Humanities Centre of the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He is a co-author of the Polish Literary Bibliography and works at the intersection of literary studies, Python programming, information architecture, and humanities data processing.
His interests include the relations between space and literature, Linked Open Data, knowledge graphs, and network-based models for describing culture. In his work, he connects academic digital humanities with the Wikimedia movement, especially in the use of Wikidata and open knowledge infrastructures for research and cultural documentation. He participates in national and international research and infrastructure projects. He is an editor of Forum Poetyki / Forum of Poetics.
Dr Claudia Serbanuta

Claudia Șerbănuță is a researcher and practitioner working at the intersection of library and information science, open knowledge, and democratic community development. She holds a PhD in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and has a postdoctoral research position in EcoJust project at Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu. From 2014 to 2016, she served as Interim Director of the National Library of Romania, where she led initiatives aimed at strengthening public access to information and modernizing library services. She is currently President of Communities of the Future Association and is active in the Wikimedians of Romania and Moldova User Group. She is a researcher in Făgăraș research Institute and a member of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions Library History Special Interest Group, contributing to international conversations on the evolution of libraries and knowledge infrastructures. Her research examines information control, censorship, and the role of public libraries in fostering democratic resilience, equitable access to knowledge, and community belonging.
Dr hab. Hanna Schreiber
[edit]UNESCO Chair on Intangible Cultural Heritage in Public and Global Governance at the University of Warsaw
Dr Hanna Schreiber — an interdisciplinary researcher and head of the UNESCO Chair in Intangible Heritage at the University of Warsaw, working at the intersection of research, institutional practice and social action. As chair of the Warsaw Intangible Heritage Team, she focuses on processes of co-heritage, co-creation of knowledge and the relationship between heritage and urban space. She approaches her collaboration with the Wikimedia movement as an “outsider”, interested in dialogue and the joint development of tools to raise the profile of practices and experiences that have until now had a limited presence in the local knowledge sphere. Dr Lozana Rossenova

Dr Lozana Rossenova is a trained digital designer with practice- as well as research-based experience in conceptualising, managing and delivering projects in the fields of cultural heritage, digital preservation, multimedia publishing and knowledge infrastructures. She holds a PhD from the Centre for the Study of the Networked Image at London South Bank University. Dr Rossenova is currently a Post-doctoral researcher at the Open Science Lab, TIB Leibniz Centre in Hanover, Germany. Her position combines Team Lead role for the Wikibase4Research service, developed in the context of NFDI4Culture – the German national consortium for research data on material and immaterial cultural heritage; as well as Scientific Lead role for the ECHOLOT project, part of the European Culture Cloud initiative funded by HORIZON Europe.
Mykola Trokhymovych
[edit]Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain
Mykola Trokhymovych is a PhD student at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, where he is part of the Social and Responsible Computing Research Group. He is co-advised by Diego Saez-Trumper and Ricardo Baeza-Yates, collaborates closely with the Wikimedia Research Team, and is supported by a Google PhD Fellowship. His research focuses on the intersection of NLP and Computational Social Science, with a focus on Wikipedia knowledge integrity, knowledge manipulation, and multilingual information quality. His work has been published at top-tier venues including ACL, KDD, WWW, CIKM, and ICWSM.
Dr Sabine von Mering
[edit]Museum für Naturkunde – Leibniz Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity Science, Berlin, Germany
Sabine von Mering is a biologist and data scientist in the Science Programme Collection Future at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, where she leads the research field Data for Nature. Her research focuses on the digital transformation of natural history collections, with the aim of opening, linking, and contextualising collection data. She advocates for Open Science and the use of Wikidata as a research tool, with a particular interest in interdisciplinary collaboration across the GLAM sector (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums). Her current work explores research expeditions, marginalised groups in knowledge production – including women in natural history, local guides, and Indigenous contributors – as well as networks of collection agents.
Dr Włodzimierz Lewoniewski

Włodzimierz Lewoniewski is an assistant professor at the Department of Information Systems at the Poznań University of Economics and Business. Research areas: information quality, Wikipedia, DBpedia, Wikidata, fake news, artificial intelligence, natural language processing. Author of over 50 scientific publications. He is also actively involved in science communication, sharing knowledge through his YouTube channel and personal website. In 2025, he was awarded the Medal of the Commission of National Education.
