ECHOLOT and ECHOES projects
Project
ECHOLOT will develop a next-generation, interoperable system for collaborative cultural heritage data curation, enrichment and reuse, validated through real-world case studies. ECHOES is developing the core of the Cultural Heritage Cloud (ECCCH), a shared platform designed to provide heritage professionals and researchers with access to data, scientific resources, training, and advanced digital tools tailored to suit their needs. Come to hear more and discuss the projects!

What makes AI Art valuable? And what takes away from it?
Workshop
The workshop is about the valuation of AI art as a collaborative discourse. Using a list of 40 identified characteristics that can make an AI assisted artwork considered valuable, participants can vote on them, arrange them in importance, add to or take away from them. No prior skills are needed, just an open mind and a will to contribute constructively to a developing discourse!

Organization

"Something that Connects People": Pluralising the Nokia Design Archive through Social Remembering
Project
This workshop will present my MA thesis work (New Media), exploring the opportunities and tensions in trans-mediating a nostalgia-charged audiovisual archive to reach a wider public beyond academia. It is open to everyone, and no specific skills are required for participation.
From 2023 to 2025, I worked at the Nokia Design Archive project at Aalto University to visualise the relations among records, curated collections, and designers' working stories. Created as a design research project, the team purposefully focused on stories of design work beyond phones and the "legend" or "fall" of Nokia. However, as an archive containing "nostalgia"-charged objects, popular media tended to portray the archive around the remembrance of the company (and phones).
In this thesis, I interviewed 6 "social rememberers" across different generations and cultures. I designed a set of object-elicitation interview probes, "Souvenirs from Your Memories", and invited the rememberers to explore the connections between their stories and the archival records.

Project
Discover how dispersed cultural heritage can be reconnected through knowledge graphs, semantic browsers, and virtual exhibitions. The Finno-Ugric Data Sharing Space showcases examples from Livonian, Seto, Mari, and Udmurt heritage and demonstrates practical solutions for multilingual metadata, rights management, copyright clearance, and GDPR-compliant data governance (example: Soviet censored Liv folk songs from archive to Spotify, Wikibase, and Wikidata). Learn how cultural collections from multiple countries (such as our Udmurt or Mari collections) can be prepared for research, education, Wikimedia projects, decolonisation, endangered language preservation, Europeana, and even wider public dissemination through platforms such as YouTube and Spotify. Suitable for GLAM professionals, Wikimedians, researchers, students, and community curators. No prior technical knowledge is required.

Open Data and AI in The Layers in The Peace Machine
Project
Layers in The Peace Machine is an immersive installation based on the book "Peace Machine" by the late AI researcher Timo Honkela. It is exhibited in Oulu City Hall during the cultural capital year 2026. Visitors can participate in the work by contributing their own peace-related memories online: https://peacemachine.eu/. The memories are processed by several AI models, and influence the sights and sounds experienced by the visitors of the installation.
In Oulu Löyly, we will present the data we have collected and the AI models we trained for the artwork. We also wish to discuss the unique challenges and questions we faced when building a fully open-source, local architecture for the installation. Because we wanted to ensure participation in the Finnish, English, Swedish and North Sámi langugages, we had to develop a lot of technology ourselves.

Content Partnerships Hub
Organization
The Wikimedia Content Partnerships Hub is a consortium of Wikimedia Affiliates that support other affiliates and members of the wikimedia movement and wider community with any stage of content partnerships with cultural heritage organisations and collections holders. In 2025-26 the hub has received funding from the Wikimedia Foundation for a Pilot phase project to implement services that support these efforts including a help desk for direct and tailored support, capacity building activities related to process and setting up Wikimedian in Residence, and making existing resources and information more accessible and useful to the community. In this activity I will present some developments in each of these areas and offer 1) matchmaking as needed for content partners and the wikimedia movement partners, 2) demo and testing of Metabase and MEOW tools, and 3) brainstorming about soft skills capacity building methods for Wikimedian in Residence programs. Come join me!

Kulttuuritavoite 2030 – tarpeesta todellisuudeksi: SDG 18:n mahdollisuudet ja käyttö kentällä
Workshop

Open Latitudes: Science, heritage, and future arts in relation to the Nordic Solstice
Network for knowledge & experience exchange with trans-disciplinary focus on solar-human relations. Science, heritage & speculative fiction all combine to offer perspective on our most endearing, consistent planetary influence: The sun & it's role in our sustainable futures.
This is the 1st in-person meeting of the network.
We will use the occasion to identify different motivations and resources related to open solar-related culture, heritage and scientific knowledge.

Think & do
The think & do workshop follows this path
Tuesday
- Making groups – The participants already know a lot about each other based on the previous day's program. With a little more push the likeminded ones will form groups to work on a joint mission.
- Drafting – Before lunch the planning will be in full thrust!
- Group work – And after lunch everyone will be fully focused on their work! There are many other spaces around the library where it is possible to work, as well as outside.
- Check-in – We return to the Laituri space for the situation check-in.
- Nightless night shift – Light snacks, hanging together, exchanging ideas.
Wednesday
- Finalizing group work – There will be a little time to finalize and prepare the presentations
- Presentations – The results are presented in the Laituri space, and the session is streamed. No pressure!
- Discussion – After the presentations we will wrap up the work and envision next steps.
Pre-events
There will be a Nordic get-together on the evening of Sunday 7 June, bridging Oulu Löyly with the Wikimedia Northern Europe Meeting 2026
