Wikisource – The Free Library – is a collaborative project aimed at creating a growing free content online library of source texts, which includes not only literary works but also historical documents, academic writings, and various other forms of literature. Additionally, it encompasses translations of these source texts in any language, making it an invaluable resource for multilingual readers and researchers. This project promotes free access to knowledge, encourages contributions from volunteers, and serves as a repository where users can both share and discover diverse works, thereby enhancing the global literary culture and preserving important texts for future generations.

The project’s aim is to host all forms of free text, in many languages, and translations. Originally conceived as an archive to store useful or important historical texts, it has expanded to become a general-content library. The project officially began on November 24, 2003, under the name Project Sourceberg, a play on Project Gutenberg. The name Wikisource was adopted later that year and it received its own domain name.

Wikisource Loves Manuscripts Philippines

Wikisource Loves Manuscripts Philippines program originated from the Wiki Rescue / Wiki Salbar initiative of Bikol Wikipedia Community as a response to the call-to-action of Wikisource Loves Manuscripts for the digitization of manuscripts on Wikisource.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the representatives of Nueva Caceres Heritage Movement Inc., Philippine Wikimedia Community Inc., and the Bikol Wikipedia Community with a common aim to promote heritage advocacy and preservation through Wikimedia projects, programs and activities.

The MOU signing was witnessed by the officers and members of the three organizations at Naga City Ecological Park on February 18 which was then followed by a meeting with Wikisource Loves Manuscripts team from the Wikimedia Foundation on the proposed Wikisource training happening later this year. In 2023, the PhilWiki Community and Bikol Wikipedia Community recognized Nueva Caceres Heritage Movement among other organizations and institutions for its invaluable support as partner.

Museum and library staff, students, and faculty are welcome to the project through a series of engaging seminars. Enriching training sessions and hands-on workshops play a crucial role in ensuring that these texts remain alive and available for future generations, fostering a rich, diverse digital library.Through this introduction, participants can build a strong foundation that will support their ongoing involvement in the project’s vision.

In partnership with museums and libraries, volunteers are bringing rare and out-of-copyright publications into the digital age. Cultural organizations and generous private collectors are lending out-of-print books that have now entered the public domain, making knowledge and history more accessible than ever before. Scanning manuscripts is a meticulous process that involves digitizing historical documents, allowing for preservation and accessibility.

Participants actively engage in transcribing digitized books, empowering themselves while inspiring others to volunteer in the development of Wikisource content.

Background

The Wikisource Loves Manuscripts Philippines training was conducted and 23 participants joined the Wikisource Loves Manuscripts PH Proofread-a-thon. The PhilWiki Community conducted a soft launching of Wikisource in the local languages featuring the translated novels and other writings of Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.[1]

On 11 July 2024, the Wikisource Loves Manuscripts Philippines concluded the 24-hour training program on transcribing, proofreading and validating Wikisource pages at Tugawe Cove Cafe. Seven participants from the University of Nueva Caceres College of Engineering and Architecture completed the training program.

At Central Bicol State University of Agriculture-Calabanga Campus, the awarding ceremony for Wikisource Loves Manuscripts was conducted. Certificates of completion were presented to participants who completed the training sessions and submitted the required outputs. During the event, 13 completers received their certificate for completing 24 hours of basic training in transcribing, proofreading, and validating manuscripts on Wikisource. Additionally, the winners of the CBSUA Wiki Education Challenge were recognized: Ella Ruffamie Nacis secured first place, Chara Amparado took second place, and Carmela Blanco placed third. Trainer Irvin Sto. Tomas awarded the certificates and prizes, assisted by Jerome Hipolito, the International Relations Officer of CBSUA-Calabanga. The training program, which ran from June 7 to July 18, 2024, attracted around 40 participants, including 26 CBSUA students.
