Project

The Ferme castrale (castle's farm) that hosts the Gourmet Museum and Library

The Gourmet Mission is a Belgian-French wikimedian project that aims to:

  1. keep track of the Gourmet Museum and Library's collection before its scattering and the museum's shut down.
  2. highlight and share the digitalized collections on the Wikimedia projects.

Histoire

The Gourmet Museum (Musée de la Gourmandise) was founded in 1995 by Nicole Hanot and Charles-Xavier Ménage in Hermalle-sous-Huy, province of Liège, Belgium. It exhibited up to 1,200 pieces about cuisine, gastronomy, nutrition and tobacco, such as everyday kitchenware, handcrafted artefacts...

The Gourmet Library, located in the museum, has been the biggest library dedicated to this subject in Belgium.

In 2026, as the museum must close its doors, its items will be scattered, given to other cultural institutions or returned to their possessors. Therefore, a mission to conserve this collection was established: the Gourmet Mission, a collaborative project that aims to photograph all the museum's artefacts to save them on Wikimedia Commons, then highlight them on other Wikimedia projects. The Mission offers a free photographic archive on a subject that is poorly-represented in free access resources: love of good food.
