Punjabi Wikipedia Workshop, Punjabi World Center Patiala

The Punjabi Wikimedians successfully organized a two-day intensive workshop at the World Punjabi Center, Punjabi University, Patiala. Moving beyond simple translation, the workshop focused on the technical and editorial skills required to create original content and substantially improve existing articles on Punjabi Wikipedia.

Background

Historically, the primary focus of Punjabi language Wikimedia projects has been the creation of new entries to expand the encyclopedia's breadth. However, to celebrate Wikipedia’s 25th anniversary, the community shifted its strategy toward quality and reliability.

The workshop was designed to support a 25 Punjabi Good Articles Campaign targeting the "Top 25" most-read Punjabi Wikipedia articles. The goal is to ensure that the most frequently accessed information is accurate, trustworthy, and culturally relevant.

A two-day Wikipedia Training Workshop was organized on 22–23 March 2026 by the Punjabi Wikimedians User Group in collaboration with the World Punjabi Centre at Punjabi University Patiala. Around 25 participants, including students and researchers, attended the workshop to develop skills in contributing to Punjabi Wikimedia projects.

Memorandum Submission and Open Knowledge Advocacy

A key highlight of the workshop was the submission of a formal memorandum to the chief guest, Tejinder Mehta, Chairman of the District Planning Committee Patiala. The memorandum, presented by senior Wikimedians Satdeep Gill, Nitesh Gill, and coordinator Kuldeep Burj Bhalaike, urged the Punjab Government to make all content produced using public funds free from copyright restrictions.

The Punjabi Wikimedians User group emphasized that publicly funded materials including books, research publications, and official reports should treated as a shared public resource. Making such content openly licensed would:

Enable wider access for students, researchers, and the public
Support the growth of Punjabi-language content on digital platforms
Strengthen the presence of Punjabi knowledge in the era of Artificial Intelligence

The Punjabi Wikimedians User Group also expressed its commitment to digitizing and hosting such openly licensed content across Wikimedia platforms, including Wikipedia, Commons, and Wikisource.

Tejinder Mehta responded positively and assured participants that he would take the proposal forward with the state leadership and relevant authorities. The World Punjabi Centre also extended its support for promoting open knowledge and digital access.

Day 1: Editing and Quality Improvement

The workshop began with an introductory icebreaker session. Nitesh Gill presented the Wikipedia 25×25 Good Articles Initiative, encouraging contributors to focus on improving article quality.

Kuldeep Burj Bhalaike emphasized prioritizing quality over quantity, highlighting:

Use of reliable references
Proper categorization
Inclusion of images

Satdeep Gill conducted hands-on training on Wikipedia editing basics and demonstrated tools such as Wikimedia Statistics to identify high-impact articles. Participants worked in pairs to edit articles and discussed standardizing commonly used Punjabi terms.

Day 2: Sources, Commons, and Review

The second day focused on research skills and content enhancement. Vipin SJ introduced participants to The Wikipedia Library, explaining how contributors can access reliable sources, including paywalled materials. A hands-on activity was conducted to practice adding references using these resources.

Hands-on referencing activity:

Participants actively practiced adding citations to Wikipedia articles using library resources.
They learned how to insert references using citation tools and templates.
This exercise helped participants understand the importance of verifiability and reliable sourcing.

Training on Wikimedia Commons covered uploading and integrating images into articles. Initiatives like Wiki Loves Punjab were also introduced.

Content review sessions included:

Comparing article versions
Standardizing spelling and terminology
Improving overall article quality

Participants were also introduced to Wikisource and ongoing digitization efforts. Additional discussions covered manual referencing, use of archival tools, and the need for future training in research methodologies.

Wikipedia Asian Month and Recognition

The workshop also highlighted participation in the Wikipedia Asian Month initiative, encouraging contributors to create and improve articles related to Asian topics. Participants were introduced to contribution statistics tracking tools to monitor their edits and article creation. Outstanding contributors were acknowledged, including winners and recipients of jury prizes for 130+ quality articles. The importance of cross-cultural content exchange and regional collaboration was emphasized.
