Welcome to Pustakatama.

s a relatively new project within Wikimedia’s multilingual ecosystem, Javanese Wikisource must be continuously enriched with a more diverse range of collections. However, Javanese-language and Javanese-script digital manuscripts/books sourced from the internet are often not freely licensed and remain very limited in number. In addition, many physical manuscripts and books in the Javanese language or script are still stored in libraries or private collections and have yet to be digitized, making them inaccessible for full use in Wikimedia projects, particularly Javanese Wikisource.

Beyond the issue of limited content quantity and variety, there is also a shortage of skilled contributors capable of managing and editing Javanese Wikisource effectively. Therefore, strategic efforts are needed to increase participation and reduce the editing gap in Javanese Wikisource in the future. One possible approach is to refer to and leverage the legal frameworks that support the preservation of manuscripts and books in Indonesia, such as Law Number 43 of 2007 on Libraries. This law emphasizes the importance of preserving library collections as part of the effort to safeguard the nation’s cultural heritage. It also stipulates that libraries are obligated to preserve library materials in both physical and digital formats.

These provisions open up opportunities for collaboration between relevant institutions and open digitization projects like Wikisource, while also providing legal legitimacy for community-driven literature preservation initiatives. In this way, community engagement in editing and digitizing historical manuscripts is not only educationally relevant but also aligned with the state’s mandate to protect Indonesia’s intellectual and cultural wealth.

Approach Strategy

The first step we will take to achieve the goals mentioned above is to establish partnerships with institutions engaged in archiving and library services, so they can contribute to the development of Wikimedia projects. We will collect Javanese-language and Javanese-script library materials that are still stored in institutions and libraries in Yogyakarta and its surrounding areas—particularly manuscripts and books that have the potential to be digitized, uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, and indexed on Javanese Wikisource.

The second step is to introduce Javanese Wikisource to prospective new contributors through editing workshops. As a form of appreciation, we will also provide souvenirs for the best contributors. This initiative is expected to boost contributor enthusiasm and help develop Javanese Wikisource into a more active and sustainable project.

Changes

Javanese Wikisource.

The changes we aim to achieve include the availability of digital library resources in the Javanese language and script, which can be openly accessed by anyone under appropriate licensing. We also aim to increase the number of indexed manuscripts/books in the Javanese Wikisource, which contributors can utilize for transcription.

In addition, we are targeting an increase in the number of new contributors who actively edit the Javanese Wikisource on a regular basis, along with improvements in their skills in applying proper proofreading practices. Through these efforts, contributors are expected to help build Javanese Wikisource into a more active and sustainable project.
