Learning

[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  • I successfully planned and visited both target states as intended. Collaborating with government bodies and security agencies played a key role in ensuring smooth access and safety throughout the trip. I also had the opportunity to connect with local photographers in each state, fostering new relationships and potential future collaborations. Most importantly, the project achieved its core objective contributing valuable visual content to Wikipedia and helping to expand its documentation of Africa’s natural heritage.
  • What did not work so well?
  • The journey across the states came with its fair share of challenges, especially with the poor road infrastructure, which made travel slow and exhausting. Some important locations were difficult to access, and without a drone, capturing wide or elevated views wasn’t possible. As the days went by, the demanding schedule and physical strain made it hard to keep up with daily uploads. This delay in uploading eventually led to a backlog that felt quite overwhelming to manage at once.
  • What would you do differently next time?
  • Looking ahead, future projects will focus on improving both access and efficiency. Engaging local guides and using advanced camera equipment will be essential for capturing high-quality visuals and navigating hard-to-reach or remote locations. To streamline the documentation process, the project timeline will be extended, with clearly designated days for fieldwork and separate sessions for uploading content. This structure will help ensure better organization and reduce the risk of backlogs.
