Goals

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? We were able to meet most of our goals, particularly in terms of recruitment, training, and community engagement. However, we fell slightly short of our articles translation target due to challenges participants faced in finding well-sourced English articles for translation to Yorùbá on Nigerian journalism. Despite that, the Translate-a-thon was successful in introducing new editors to the Yorùbá Wikipedia and bridging the content gap on the Yorùbá Wikipedia.

60 articles	42 articles	We were unable to reach the target outcome on the articles stated to be translated, the reason being that most of the articles participants wanted to work on are not on the English Wikipedia which is the source where we were translating from. Many participants complained about this challenge during the translate-a-thon.
To promote indigenous language use in digital spaces	Successful	We successfully use Wikipedia to promote the Yorùbá language use in the digital spaces. We had two to three participants who are not Yorùbá indigenes but participated in the program, and participants were trained on how to promote their indigenous language through free knowledge sharing.

What worked well?

The training on open knowledge worked very well. The participants were attentive to details and followed the guidelines. Demonstrations were carried out on the training ground with questions and answers.

What did not work so well?

Participants finding it difficult to get list of articles to work on which led to the low in participation in the contest.

What would you do differently next time?

Next we would try as much as possible to work on the list of articles participants can work on with our targets. Our thoughts were that since it's a competition, participants should be able to source for articles themselves.

Remaining funds

Do you have any remaining grant funds? No, there is no grant funds available. We spent the funds accordingly. Even it get to a point where we used personal funds to cater for participants data reimbursement and refreshments due to the high number of students who attended the event which is more than those approved.

Anything else you want to share about your project? We are grateful for the support from the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria. This project demonstrated the value of language-focused outreach in increasing both participation and representation on Wikipedia. We hope to scale this effort in the future by creating more awareness on Nigerian languages and engaging student language associations in the University.
