Goals

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes, the project successfully met its primary goals. We trained and recruited new editors on Wikidata, created and improved structured data for young Nigerian leaders, and raised awareness about the representation gap of youths on Wikimedia platforms.

Both the physical and virtual trainings were highly interactive, with participants demonstrating strong engagement and rapid adoption of Wikidata editing skills.
The edit-a-thon contest encouraged sustained contributions, resulting in a significant number of new items and improved content.
Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing interest in continuing contributions to Wikidata and joining Wikimedia user groups in Nigeria.
Overall, the project not only achieved its targets but also contributed to capacity building and digital skills development for young Nigerian leaders.

Learning

What worked well?

Physical and virtual trainings effectively built capacity among participants, with hands-on guidance helping participants quickly learn how to create and edit Wikidata items.
Outreach through WhatsApp, Facebook, and youth groups significantly increased engagement and awareness about the project.
The edit-a-thon contest motivated participants to actively contribute and compete creatively, resulting in a high number of new items and improved content.
Mentorship and follow-up support helped participants overcome challenges while editing Wikidata items and ensured sustained participation.

What did not work so well?

Some participants had difficulty navigating Wikidata on mobile devices.
Internet connectivity issues during virtual sessions disrupted contributions for a few editors.
A small number of participants required extra guidance to ensure accurate and high-quality entries.

What would you do differently next time?

Provide pre-event onboarding tutorials or videos to familiarize participants with the Wikidata interface.
Ensure reliable internet backup or recommend locations with strong connectivity for virtual sessions.
Allocate additional time during the physical session to demonstrate complex item creation, linking, and references.
Expand partnerships with youth-focused organizations to maintain long-term engagement post-project.
