From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Goals

[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes, The Osun Wikimedia Network held a physical meet-up among the network volunteers and new editors curious about contributing to the Wikimedia project while focusing on the existing Wikipedia articles.

The one-day physical program introduced the ways and methods they can use to add their knowledge quota and support the Wikimedia mission. The meet-up centered on improving their knowledge and editing skills on Wikipedia. The training session supports editors to connect with other Wikimedians to foster inclusion, build and strengthen volunteer engagement, and improve their abilities. Newbies were welcomed, and we supported them with all the information needed to be informed about as a Wikipedia editor and also create information on Wikipedia.

Learning

[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  • What did not work so well?
  • What would you do differently next time?

Welcoming new editors is crucial for maintaining and expanding Wikimedia's reach and advocacy in our community. The resources and support from the Wikimedia Nigeria User Group guide us in introducing the code of conduct, what is required of new Wikimedia editors, the editing processes, and many more. By actively engaging in online and offline community outreach where potential editors might be present, offering workshops, Q&A sessions, or mentorship programs. By sharing inspiring stories of how new editors have made valuable contributions to Wikipedia, showcasing the positive impact they can have. Providing this support fosters a welcoming and supportive community for new editors; they ask questions, and we also receive feedback from the participants. By making these efforts, we can attract a wider range of individuals to become Wikipedia editors and ensure that the Encyclopedia remains a valuable resource for all.

Anything else?

[edit]

Anything else you want to share about your project?

The Meetup of the Network will bring the contributor/participant closer to the community and also give them a free space to contribute, discuss the challenges they are facing, and give them basic knowledge on how to be a better representation of the community and also a Wikipedian who contributes in his/her local content for a better representation.
