Goals

[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes, Wikipedia Awareness in Uniosun: We partnered with a faculty (Faculty of Environmental Sciences) in the university. We created a flyer to send an invite to the students of the school to come and learn how to contribute to Wikimedia projects and its sister bodies. The awareness is to recruit new editors and teach them how to contribute to Wikipedia and why it is important they contribute. Trained them on how to improve existing Wikipedia articles and how to create new ones. Feedback was collected in the form of Q&A to learn about their experience with Wikipedia and feedback on how we can serve them better to aid their commitment to editing Wikipedia.

Learning

[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  • What did not work so well?
  • What would you do differently next time?

We introduced participants with a brief history of Wikipedia and its sister projects. We emphasised how editing Wikipedia can benefit them individually and also how it can improve their research and writing skills as students and also help put their local content out into the free knowledge space. The program also serves as an edit-a-thon, which centers on adding more information to Wikipedia articles and creating visibility for Nigerian content on Wikipedia. The awareness program has added to the number of Wikimedians in Osun State and also improved members participation in the Osun Wikimedia Network. Going forward, the network will bring the contributors/participants closer to the community and also give them a platform to contribute, discuss the challenges they are facing, and also recruit them with basic knowledge on how to be a better representative of the Wikimedia community at large. Also, empower them to become Wikipedians who contribute to their local content for better representation.
