Requests for new languages/Wikibooks Bashkir

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
submitted verification final decision

This proposal has been approved.
The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project.

A committee member provided the following comment:

  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code ba (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Bashkir Language name in English
Language name Башҡортса Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q13389 - item has currently the following values:
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality no indication Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name Викидәреслек "Wikibooks" in your language
Project namespace Викидәреслек usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace "Wikibooks talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Asia/Yekaterinburg "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
submit Phabricator task. It will include everything automatically, except additional namespaces/settings. After creating the task, add a link to the comment.

Proposal[edit]

Bashkir is spoken by 1.2 Million people. It is one of the major languages of Bashkortostan. The Bashkir Wikipedia has more than 35,000 articles. A lot of Bashkir users would want to see a Wikibooks in Bashkir. We also have registered Wikimedians of Bashkortostan User Group.

For community: ZUFAr (N), Аҡҡашҡа (N), Гүзәл Ситдиҡова (N), Гөлзаһира (N), Гөлназ Ишемғолова (N), Ләйсән (N), Селтәр (N), Һәҙиә (N).

Hello (e.g. User:Comp1089). In order to make it possible to request the creation of the wiki, please provide the desired translations for the Project namespace, Project talk namespace, logo and timezone in the table at the top of the page. --MF-W 15:56, 10 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As specified by Ләйсән in this edit, timezone = "Asia/Yekaterinburg" (UTC+5, also known as YEKT). - dcljr (talk) 22:58, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, everyone, but the way I was trying to do this was confusing even to me! All the "evidence" is still here in this collapsed section, but I'm adding a new section below that will hopefully make it easier to see what still needs to be agreed upon. - dcljr (talk) 22:58, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

While we're at it, can we also verify the local (Bashkir) names of the other namespaces? Here are all the standard namespaces, their "canonical" names (i.e., English names understood by the MediaWiki software regardless of local settings), and the names used by the Bashkir Wikipedia. Can someone who speaks Bashkir please verify that these are correct, and change any that are incorrect? (Note that there is no "Special talk" namespace.) - dcljr (talk) 01:12, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Note added after some of the discussion below: For #4 and #5, the English prefixes "Project:" and "Project talk:" work on all non-English wikis (whether Wikibooks or Wikipedia, Wiktionary, etc.); and while the English "Wikibooks:" is equivalent to "Project:" on all Wikibooks wikis (and therefore works as a canonical name for #4), the English "Wikibooks talk:" usually does not work on non-English wikis, unless specially requested by the local wiki community. However, localized versions of #4 and #5 on non-English Wikibooks wikis are based on translations of the phrases "Wikibooks" and "Wikibooks talk", not "Project" and "Project talk". Sorry this is so confusing. - dcljr (talk) 03:37, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

dcljr I was making corrections.--ZUFAr (talk) 04:14, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, ZUFAr. I have underlined your additions. Some corrections/comments: Your suggestions for #8 and #9 use the word "Викимедиа", which is a transliteration of "Wikimedia" (an organization), whereas they should be based on the name "MediaWiki" (a piece of software). On #5, you don't have to translate the phrase "Project talk", only "Wikibooks talk". (Sorry for the confusion. The English label "Project talk:" just happens to work on all wikis to bring up pages in that namespace, and "Wikibooks talk:" just happens to work on some but not all wikis. Most wikis only use the translation of "Wikibooks talk" for that namespace.) Finally, just to satisfy my own curiosity: why the three different ways of saying "talk" ("менән һөйләшеү" vs. "тураһында түгел" vs. "тураһында фекерләшеү")? Is it because they are used for people, groups, and things (respectively)? Oh, and what's the difference between those and "буйынса фекерләшеү"? - dcljr (talk) 08:41, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I am agree with you. This proposal can be literally translated.

  • Ҡатнашыусы МЕНӘН һөйләшеү (talking WITH user)
  • MediaWiki буйынса фекерләшеү (talk at the MediaWiki)
  • MediaWik тураһында фекерләшеү ((talking abou MediaWiki) --ZUFAr (talk) 09:34, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

So is the list of namespace translations final? Also we still need a logo and timezone. --MF-W 18:51, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Not quite. I was hoping ZUFAr would actually update the list again in light of my comments. I have taken the liberty of striking out the ones that I think are not appropriate (as explained above). We still need a clear decision on #8 and #9. I think by "This proposal can be literally translated" ZUFAr meant that we should go with МедиаВики and МедиаВики тураһында фекерләшеү (based on a Latin-script-to-Cyrillic transliteration of the word "MediaWiki" and ZUFAr's original suggestion for #9), but I'm not 100% sure. Of course, another possibility is MediaWiki and MediaWiki тураһында фекерләшеү, since there's nothing that says "MediaWiki" must be transliterated (I assume!). Maybe we could get the opinion(s) of Аҡҡашҡа, Гүзәл Ситдиҡова, Гөлзаһира, Гөлназ Ишемғолова, Ләйсән, Селтәр, or Һәҙиә (the other ba-N users listed above)? As for the timezone and logo (to be added to the "New wiki request" template call found at the top when editing this entire page), someone needs to decide whether to use, say, "Asia/Yekaterinburg" (= UTC+5, the timezone of Bashkortostan), or something else. ("UTC" seems to be the default timezone when no other alternative is specified.) The logo will have to be created by someone. I'm not sure the best place to request that if you can't do it yourself (based, presumably, on one of the originals at commons:Template:Wikibooks logos?). - dcljr (talk) 03:37, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Old namespace names

(I hope having this subsection won't be overly confusing!)

Well, darn it… I didn't realize this is a reopening of a wiki that already exists (closed back in May 2008, or thereabouts). So the wiki actually already has namespaces!

Here they are:

  1. Фекерләшеү
  2. Ҡатнашыусы
  3. Ҡатнашыусы менән һөйләшеү
  4. Wikibooks → Викидәреслек
  16. Special → Махсус

The ones in green match what we already have "agreed on" above. Obviously the others are not fully translated, although #8 and #9 would be acceptable (as discussed above, if the community wants it that way) and already match the ones used by the Bashkir Wikipedia.

[I totally messed this up the first time, so I've changed the green to reflect the truth. See the next section below. - dcljr (talk) 22:58, 14 August 2017 (UTC)][reply]

The wiki also has the following additional namespaces:

  • 828 Модуль ок!
  • 829 Модуль буйынса фекерләшеү ок!
  • 2300 Gadget → Гаджет
  • 2301 Gadget talk → Гаджет буйынса фекерләшеү
  • 2302 Gadget definition → Гаджетты билдәһе
  • 2303 Gadget definition talk → Гаджет билдәһе буйынса фекерләшеү
  • 2600 Тема → Тема

These need to be checked and/or translated. Apparently #828 and #829 are the "Module" and "Module talk" namespaces used by the Scribunto extension; 2600 seems to be the "Topic" namespace used by Flow. - dcljr (talk) 04:31, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

dcljr, thanks. All right. timezone - YEKT--Ләйсән (talk) 05:06, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
As in the previous section, I've underlined the new translations (and made them green where they match the ones listed above). There seems to be disagreement about how to say "talk" in #5 and #9 (as well as whether to transliterate "MediaWiki"). And for the convenience of readers: YEKT timezone is the same as "Asia/Yekaterinburg" or "UTC+5". - dcljr (talk) 05:52, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
ZUFAr (or someone else), can you verify the new names (non-green underlined entries above)? I'd like to get at least 2 different users to agree on each entry. - dcljr (talk) 20:01, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I confirm this.

  • Wikibooks буйынса фекерләшеү → Викидәреслек буйынса фекерләшеү
  • MediaWiki → MediaWiki
  • MediaWiki буйынса фекерләшеү → MediaWiki буйынса фекерләшеү --ZUFAr (talk) 20:08, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Namespace names[edit]

Sorry to everyone involved, but I totally messed up in my attempt above to show agreement between ZUFAr's choices and the old namespace names; instead I accidentally indicated agreement between the Bashkir Wikipedia names and the old (closed) Bashkir Wikibooks names!

So, "starting over"… [eye-roll]

Here's where we stand, after taking everyone's suggestions into account. (The "implied" choices are the user not offering any changes to a proposed list of names. Yellow indicates choices that don't match the others — I'm not saying these are necessarily wrong, but there should probably be explicit agreement to these by another user if we're going to go with them. I have invited Comp1089 to weigh in here again.)

After all that work, all but the Gadget-related namespaces ended up the same as in bawiki, anyway, so I guess no changes are necessary in that file, at least (AFAICT). I'll look into creating a Phabricator task to rename the Gadget namespaces later today (unless someone else beats me to it). - dcljr (talk) 01:20, 17 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I assume this goes in the same request. (I'm sure I'll find out if that's not true!) - dcljr (talk) 23:07, 17 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
