Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Dialek Arekan
| submitted | verification | final decision |
| Discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Votes will be ignored when judging the proposal. Please provide arguments or reasons and be prepared to defend them (see the Language proposal policy).
The language committee needs to verify the language is eligible to be approved. |
- The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
- The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
- The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:

Proposal
[edit]I would like to add the Arekan Javanese language, better known as the Arekan Dialect Group or Arekan Dialect. This is because this language is used in 18 regions in East Java. It is indeed a Javanese language, but it is more modern and more widely used in society than Javanese itself, which has a more refined accent. The Arekan dialect is more commonly used by Generation Z in the Surabaya, Gresik, Sidoarjo, and Malang areas. The Arekan Javanese language is one of the modern Javanese dialects spoken in central and eastern East Java, particularly in the Surabaya–Sidoarjo–Gresik metropolitan area, Malang Raya, Pasuruan Regency–City, Mojokerto Regency–City, most of Lamongan and Jombang Regencies, part of Lumajang, and a small part of Bangkalan. This dialect branches off from the East Javanese dialect and consists of the Surabaya dialect and the Malang dialect. In general, people who speak the Arekan dialect are native East Javanese.
The Arekan dialect has a slightly different phonology from Standard Javanese. Its status as a non-standard language means that this dialect is not widely used in writing. The term Arekan dialect has only been known in written form since the 21st century, especially after social media became widely used as a means of communication in informal language. The most striking difference between the Arekan dialect and Standard Javanese lies in affixes and vocabulary choice. This is also what gives this dialect its name, Arekan, which comes from the use of the word arèk (child) to replace bocah (kid) and can also mean guys in English. The word arèk itself comes from the word laré, which means child in Javanese.
