Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Judeo-Tripolitanian Arabic
| submitted | verification | final decision |
| Discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Votes will be ignored when judging the proposal. Please provide arguments or reasons and be prepared to defend them (see the Language proposal policy).
The language committee needs to verify the language is eligible to be approved. |
- The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
- The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
- The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
| What | Value | Example / Explanation |
|---|
| Proposal | ||

| Project namespace | Wikipedia | usually the same as the project name |
| Project talk namespace | Wikipedia_talk | "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace) |

Proposal
[edit]rationale for the creation of the judeo-tripolitanian arabic wikipedia (yud)
1. linguistic classification and cultural significance
- judeo-tripolitanian arabic (iso 639-3: yud) is a distinct Semitic language historically spoken by the Jewish community of Libya. While linguistically part of the Maghrebi Judeo-Arabic continuum, it possesses unique phonological, morphological, and lexical features that differentiate it from the Muslim Libyan dialects.
- Orthography: Unlike local Libyan Arabic, this language has a centuries-old tradition of being written exclusively in the Hebrew script.
Cultural Heritage: The language serves as the primary vehicle for a vast corpus of liturgical translations (Sharḥ), folk literature, and community records.
2. Current Status and Endangerment Following the mass migrations of the 20th century, the majority of native speakers now reside in Israel and Italy.
- Endangerment: The language is currently classified as "Endangered" by linguists. While it remains a living language among the older and middle-aged generations, there is a significant risk of linguistic attrition among the youth.
- Need for Documentation: There is a critical lack of centralized, open-access digital content in Judeo-Tripolitanian, which hinders efforts to revitalize the language for future generations.
3. Strategic Objectives of the Project The establishment of a dedicated Wikipedia (וויק'יפדיא) will achieve several key goals:
- Standardization of Orthography: By providing a platform for consistent writing in the Hebrew script, the project will help formalize modern Judeo-Tripolitanian spelling conventions.
- Expanding the Lexicon: A Wikipedia environment encourages the adaptation of the language to modern encyclopedic topics (science, technology, and global history), ensuring its relevance in the 21st century.
- Cross-Border Collaboration: This platform will bridge the gap between the Israeli and Italian branches of the community, allowing for a collaborative preservation effort that respects regional dialectal variations.
4. Project Viability There is a growing interest within the community and among researchers to document the language.
- Resources: The project will draw upon existing primary sources, including traditional translations and historical communal texts, to ensure linguistic authenticity.
- The Incubator Phase: We intend to utilize the Wikimedia Incubator to develop a robust core of articles, focusing on high-quality content that demonstrates the language's capacity for encyclopedic depth. --היודע והאינו נודע (talk) 12:45, 5 April 2026 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- An active test project needs to be in the Incubator. --Danvintius Bookix (talk) 17:28, 16 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Danvintius Bookix – What do you mean? - Maybe you mean this? (@Minorax) היודע והאינו נודע (talk) 06:40, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
- @היודע והאינו נודע Yes. But now there is only Main Page in this project. I can help you with it, but I don't know this language. --Danvintius Bookix (talk) 09:16, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
- I'll tell you: I have no problem writing the first and most important values, and I can think of a few more to add if the project progresses, but I won't always have the time to invest in just that. So maybe you can help with the technical part with your knowledge. היודע והאינו נודע (talk) 12:53, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
- Can you bring more people into writing there? Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 13:16, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

- I support this project, As a Libyan native from Tripoli I’d love to help with this project, I can help with both the technical side and writing articles, Although I am a native speaker of the Tripolitanian dialect I don’t mind learning the Hebrew alphabet. -- Aws 💬 Talk 12:26, 23 April 2026 (UTC)
- I am very happy to hear that a person from Libya is interested in helping with such a project, and providing a slightly different perspective on this language that may have become a bit blurred over time. I can also teach you the Hebrew script and I have already added a base table that will be used by the community. Another thing, although it is less common to do this, but perhaps it could help with the project - you say you were born in Libya, so with your permission I asked (you don't have to answer) how old you are and did you have any contact with those Jews who spoke this language? היודע והאינו נודע (talk) 13:43, 23 April 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks! I'm 22, so I didn't get to meet them personally, but my grandfather lived in the same neighborhood as the community, so I grew up with the stories and the general vibe. -- Aws 💬 Talk 13:55, 23 April 2026 (UTC)
