From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
submitted verification final decision

This language has been verified as eligible.
The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page.

Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval and will verify the test project content with a reliable neutral source, such as a professor or expert.

If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval.

A committee member provided the following comment:

Please contribute to the test project. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:46, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code cak (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...

Proposal[edit]

Kaqchikel is an isolated language spoken in Guatemala by Maya people, also in Mexico by a small comunity. There are 800,000 speakers (quantities vary accords the method of study). The language has two major scripts, however none is universally accepted. There was another proposal here, and the localization is at work.

Discussion[edit]

Arguments in favour[edit]

  • Support This project has the participation of at least 10 bilingual speakers from Guatemala that are being trained by Marrovi in wiki code to begin work on the edition. They have also invited other enthusiasts from countries such as Argentina and Ecuador to support the initiative, in addition they ask the support of Wikimedia Mexico chapter, represented by me. --ProtoplasmaKid 06:25, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Good evening to all from Calabria,
I write first to greet you, and to support the full project, in which I firmly believe, in my humble opinion I consider the Rising: Wikipedia Kaqchikel, a wonderful project as all the rest of the Wikipedias. I have already pronounced, and I speak today in favor of the new Wikipedias, also in Kaqchikel, and we welcome new projects, because the same as the Charter of Human Rights provides for the expression of their language and culture, it is my native Calabrian or the Sicilian, the Chuvash, or Kaqchikel, because our culture does not lose but from spreading to the mists of time. I propose as an ambassador to the Wikipedians in Europe and more Wikipedias that this new shoot will grow and strengthen. Greetings to all of you, Cordially--Lodewijk Vadacchino 18:41, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think this project is an important contribution to the language revitalization movement of the kaqchikel language. Since Wikipedia is widely used for online consultation on almost every topic, it is necessary to provide kaqchikel speakers (and no-speakers) with the opportunity to read and publicly produce texts in their own language. Community edited encyclopedic articles can be very helpful in sharing new or not so common vocabulary, which is not used in normal conversation, but is necessary for this kind of literature. It is also my opinion, that kaqchikel contributors to Wikipedia will see themselves in the necessity to write about themes which are not always part of their literature, which until now has been very much concerned with more “traditional” content (oral tradition, legends, etc.). Lastly, the Kaqchikel Wikipedia is important because it can have a positive impact on the valorization of the language by the non-indigenous, Spanish-speaking Guatemalan. --Gatemonte 02:11, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • If the new language is approved, almost a half of a million of maya kaqchikel will have a unique opportunity to revitalize their language, history and traditions; not only the ones who live in Guatemala, but those who have emigrated to the United States and other nations. In a country where the racism and discrimination still affecting indigenous population, this kind of spaces reinforces the claim for intercultural and multilingual education. Therefore, I support the project and vote in favor of the addition of the maya kaqchikel in Wikipedia. Francisco A. Sapón January 2012 (UTC)
  • support I think that this project is a great idea, and there are editors, so why hasn't a final decision been made?

  • I strongly support this project. Kaqchikel is one of the most robust Mayan languages, with an active literature and rich text tradition. Many Kaqchikel speakers use the internet regularly. In the last few years, we have worked on a few projects to port web interfaces into Kaqchikel, and these have been very well received. Additionally, Kaqchikel is one of the most widely studied Mayan languages at the international level, so a Kaqchikel Wikipedia would have the additional support of numerous universities, departments of linguistics and anthropology, and academic centers for Latin American Studies.
  • I’m also supporting this project. It will become hopefully in an important online resource of knowledge in this language, helping to reduce the digital divide. —Fitoschido [shouttrack] @ 20 February, 2012; 14:57
  • support: Good morning, I am a Basque Wikipedian, I have met the efforts of some digital activists who want to strengthen this project, and I want to give them all my support and respect. I hope that soon they can consolidate this beautiful project. Best regards.Demonocrazy (talk) 18:48, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
