Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Mandailing

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
submitted verification final decision

This proposal has been approved.
The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project.

A committee member provided the following comment:

  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code btm (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Mandailing Language name in English
Language name ᯚᯒᯬ ᯔᯊ᯲ᯑᯤᯞᯪᯊ᯲ᯎ᯲ / Saro Mandailing Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q2891049 - item has currently the following values:
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality LTR Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name Wikipedia "Wikipedia" in your language
Project namespace Wikipedia usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace Obar Wikipedia "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Asia/Jakarta "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

  6. Weak support, for now. I had the privilege to meet some potential young Mandailing contributors during local Wikipedia edit-a-thon in Medan October last year. They are trying to obtain some resources (dictionaries, first things first) to prepare a Mandailing Wikipedia, and I've seen some of their contributions here. If they can build and maintain a stable community in next one to two years, I think this proposal is feasible. Muhraz (talk) 04:04, 28 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  7. It's been several years now, and I've seen support from contributors of Wiktionary Mandailing (wikt:btm) and also Wikimedia Indonesia. So I will gladly support this project's to be made. Consistent edits since January 2023, has had at least 3 active users for the past 7 months. Bennylin 11:04, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose

[edit]
  1. Oppose Most of the supporter can't even speak Mandailing, while I can speak Mandailing, most of these supporter don't even contribute to incubators, not to mention the "parent" language of batak language (and I'm also one of this language speaker) is not continued on incubator. Why Mandailing deserve to be approved when the incubator got abandoned?--AldnonymousBicara? 16:06, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid only @StevenJ81: (who marked this page as eligible) can answer you. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 23:52, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
"Eligible" does not mean "approved". The "supporters" here had absolutely nothing to do with it, to tell you the truth. The project has over 1,000 main space pages, with contributions going back a number of years, plus continued contributions into 2018–2019. What "eligible" means is that if the test continues to grow, and eventually meets requirements for content, activity and interface translation it can be approved in the future. In other words, it's eligible to be approved in the future. But it's certainly not approved now.
I will add: The "parent" language does not have an ISO 639–3 code. It has an ISO 639–2/5 code as a collection of languages. But projects are not approved in collections. So Mandailing is an appropriate candidate for a future project. StevenJ81 (talk) 13:23, 24 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
What you said is correct statement, what I'm opposing is for entirely different reason though, maybe Liuxinyu970226 misread my comment. What I want to say is, not enough community to expand this wiki, that's all.--AldnonymousBicara? 14:04, 24 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Aldnonymous: Yes, that's the reason why this request can't be immediately approved, it should be approved if and only if there are a lot of Mandailing native users (≥100, possible?) to contribute in a long period. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 04:15, 28 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think I'm going to struck my comment when the community has grown, afaik, Wikimedia Indonesia currently have no interest expanding to Mandailing area, so yeah...--AldnonymousBicara? 06:52, 28 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Aldnonymous:your argument is too emotional.we only develop our native language. After looking at your profile we know that, we have never asked you for help personally and remember you are only a small part of the Indonesian Wikimedia.

@Simartampua: Fill more informations that are about 5W1H do we need Wikipedia in this language, and a brief informations about the community that you're making, please? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 12:49, 10 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Anyway, how do we call "Wikipedia" in this language? And how to translate the namespace "Wikipedia_talk:"? @IHLubis, Abdul Harris Nasution, and Ahmad Abadi Rangkuti: any ideas? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 23:36, 1 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, sorry for the delay in my response. Regarding the naming of Wikipedia, it seems that there is no specific term in Mandailing to describe or translate Wikipedia. Unlike Wiktionary, in Mandailing language, there is a mention of word treasury because Mandailing society has different language usage depending on its location. So, for the naming of Wikipedia, we believe 'Wikipedia' alone is sufficient. As for 'Wikipedia_talk,' if it means discussion or conversation, then 'Wikipedia_Parkobaran,' but if it refers to speech, then 'Wikipedia_hata'. IHLubis (talk) 08:40, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
