Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Goalpariya

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
submitted verification final decision

This language has been verified as eligible.
The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page.

Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval and will verify the test project content with a reliable neutral source, such as a professor or expert.

If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval.

A committee member provided the following comment:

Please contribute to the test. For LangCom: StevenJ81 (talk) 15:39, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code rkt (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Rangpuri Language name in English
Language name Rajbongshi-Kamatapuri (Roman script)/ রাজবংশী-কামতাপুরী (Eastern Nagri script) Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...

Project namespace Wikipedia Rajbongshi-Kamatapuri usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace Wikipedia Rajbongshi-Kamatapuri talk "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads yes Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Asia/New Delhi "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

Rajbongshi-Kamatapuri(also called Rajbongshi,Kamatapuri or Rangpuri) is the mother-tongue of the people of lower or western Assam and North Bengal. It is spoken in North Bengal and of Bangladesh (up to Rongpur) and Eastern Nepal too i.e. the Kamata state of 15th century.

The University of Gauhati has included the language and culture of Goalpara in the university curriculum, “Mahoot Bandure”, the first cinema of Assam bears the testimony of the culture and language of Goalpara, that the noted singer of Goalpariya Lokageet, Pratima Barua Pande has been awarded with ‘Padma-Sree’ award by Government of India.

Goverment of West Bengal recognised the language in both names,Rajbongshi and Kamatapuri. And these are Additional Official languages of West Bengal state.

So Rajbongshi-Kamatapuri language is significant for a lot of people from North-East India and northern Bangladesh. A Wikipedia page in this language will help those people.

Padmashree Dr Dharma Narayan Barman has written many books on this language. Linguist Matthew Toulmin made great research about this language.e

Discussion

Hello! You need to start a "test Wikipedia" before you can get a subdomain (rkt.wikipedia.org). You can click here to do that. Do you think that Rangpuri/Goalpariya is different enough from Assamese for its own Wikipedia? If so, please click on the link I provided to start a wiki in Rangpuri. πr2 (tc) 15:55, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nice start on the main page! I have another question: Will this wiki be written in Latin, Assamese, Bengali, or Devanagari script? Thank you for starting incubator:Wp/rkt/Main Page! Now you can start to write more articles about science, arts, countries, famous people (whatever you're interested in). πr2 (tc) 20:54, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Actually Goalpariya has very little documented manuscripts. Also as this language is spoken over a wide range of area which comprises of parts Assam, West Bengal, Bangladesh, and Bihar, and all of these have different scripts I think it would be best to write the wiki in Latin so that all speakers from these parts can understand what is written. --Abdul wa7eed (talk) 13:19, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This language should not be written in Latin. It should be written in Assamese script, as that is the script used for the past literature that it can claim for itself, written on its soil. Chaipau (talk) 17:16, 11 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well Goalpariya is not only spoken in Assam but also in Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Meghalaya, Nepal and North Bangladesh. How can a Bihari or a person from Odisha read Assamese. As far as the literature in Assamese is concerned most of it is written by Assamese linguists and historians and not by native speakers. Goalpariya is known as Kamata/Rajbangsi in Bengal, and Kamata/Rajbangsi literature are written in Bengali and not Assamese. Also there are disadvantages of using Assamese script because (স) and (চ) is not pronounced in Goalpariya like it is in Assamese (Goalpariya pronunciation is like 's' in 'salt' while Assamese pronunciation is more like 'xh'). It is likely to create confusion. Abdul wa7eed (talk) 15:36, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Kandarpajit Kallol
Can you translate that to English for the non-Bengali speakers among us? PiRSquared17 (talk) 20:14, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Translation of the comment by Kandarpajit Kallol: "Since the language is not limited to Goalpara, but associated with the Kamatapur region, the name should have been Kamatapuri. even though there is some issues with the script, I do not support the Roman script". Chaipau (talk) 11:37, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: The book mentioned above should not be used as a reference for the Goalpariya dialect. In the foreword, it mentions: "a synchronic study of the language has been made in this book taking Dhubri, district (Assam) as the geographical boundary of the study". The Dhubri district is a current district, which is but a part of the undivided Goalpara district, which is itself a part of the larger Kamatapur region. Chaipau (talk) 14:41, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think Goalparia and Rangpuri are closely related but not the same language. I read (here) that Goalparia has 2 main dialects: Eastern and Western. In the Eastern dialect the "s" are pronounced as "x" unlike the Western. Also in Rangpuri "I do" is "mui koru" and in Goalparia it is "mui korung", so there can be more differences other than scripts. I think it's better to add Rangpuri and Goalpariya separately. -- Msa, 17 November 2017

@StevenJ81: You said that this is eligible on the main RFL page, but not this one, idk why? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 15:33, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Liuxinyu970226: I have no idea what you're talking about. (embarrassed blush) StevenJ81 (talk) 15:39, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Abdul wa7eed: The disadvantages you mentioned don't exist. Rajbongsi and Goalpariya have their own alphabet with স for so, ৰ for ro, ৱ for wo etc in Assam. It's not spoken in Orissa. The Bihari one (Surjapuri) has some differences. The Nepali one is written in Devanagari I think. For Wikipedia it would be great if we get a way to switch scripts / alphabets, just like we can switch fonts, font sizes, day/night mode etc (if the spellings are different then we can have an option to write the article in another alphabet with different spellings). I prefer to use all scripts, but if not possible, we can use the traditional script (looking at manuscripts inscriptions from Kamatapur Kingdom). And that version can be used in Wikipedia. If additional characters are needed then we can ask Unicode to add (and we have to wait for that) or we can use existing variants/cognates instead. Msasag (কথা পাতক)
