Among the twelve major Finno-Ugric languages, nine have their Wikipedia (number of articles in brackets) – Finnish (187,000), Hungarian (112,000), Estonian (57,000), Sami (2,700), Võro (1,900), Komi (990), Erzya (632), Udmurt (370), Moksha (292) –, three are on the Incubator – Eastern Mari (900), Karelian (130), Veps (49). Finnish, Hungarian and Estonian are very active ; the others… ; Mari : about a half are articles about the calendar (dates)… articles of those small languages are mainly substubs.

Arguments in favour[edit]

  • None. Nobody is interested. Every living language must have its Wikipedia, but without native speakers ? But… :
    • Strong support ; the Veps test needs some basic translations, see here but without a « request for a new language », no translation in Betawiki (see here) . --Budelberger 23:51, 13 December 2008 (UTC) ().Reply[reply]
    • What's the problem? Many vepses are interested in the project, and they shall come here very soon. We have about 8000 - 9000 speakers (my figures; officially - less)... Some people are really very active. Игорь Бродский 20:03, 23 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Arguments against[edit]

  • A very small language. I'm alone (User : Veps-0) in the Veps test. --Budelberger 23:51, 13 December 2008 (UTC) ().Reply[reply]
  • Just asking for a new project because you can is not a good idea. Without the support of anyone with any capability in this language it does not seem like a viable request. Thanks, GerardM 00:50, 14 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Other discussion[edit]

It should not be so strict and quick decision. Veps language is vital and (surprisingly) has a big internet community with real specialists-linguists and even writers and poets - native veps speakers. Now I'm trying to involve them in this project and there is some sucess. So it is not a dead proposal - when the betawiki translation is nearly completed and the incubator project is OK I will make a new proposal. Sura 23:47, 11 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

    • Well, we need some time to complete the work in betawiki... but it is in progress :-) We will try to look like Võrõ Wiki-activists ;-) Игорь Бродский 20:08, 23 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
