Requests for new languages/Wikivoyage Romanian

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
submitted verification final decision

This proposal has been approved.
The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project.

A committee member provided the following comment:

  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code ro (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Romanian Language name in English
Language name română Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality no indication Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name Wikivoyage "Wikivoyage" in your language
Project namespace Wikivoyage usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace Discuție Wikivoyage "Wikivoyage talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads yes Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo File:Wikivoyage-logo-en.svg This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Europe/Bucharest "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
submit Phabricator task. It will include everything automatically, except additional namespaces/settings. After creating the task, add a link to the comment.

Proposal[edit]

Romanian Wikipedia has a generous amount of articles, (around 220,000) and we'll keep creating them because that is representing us, the every user on the romanian Wikipedia. We think that Romanian speakers need such a project not only because of lack of high-quality resources in this domain on the internet in romanian, but also because we need to show ourselves, to show what we got, to prosper together with other Wikimedia projects. I'm very sure that everyone that will Support this will contribute to this new project with unseen before enthusiasm. Cheers and good luck ! --Octavius 909 (talk) 20:10, 23 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

Do note that there were already quite a few people that expressed interest at the old proposal page. Also, AFAIK the Language committee has granted a dispense from these rules for wikivoyage/wikitravel project that already existed, which is the case for ro.wikitravel. Therefore I think it would only be fair to skip the incubator and launch ro.wikivoyage.org with the content existing at ro.wikitravel.--Strainu (talk) 20:31, 23 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, this is the case; I am currently figuring out how we can best import the content from ro.wikitravel (as well as for Spanish, Portuguese, and the other languages), after which ro.wikivoyage can be created. --MF-W 12:09, 24 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you have trouble with the dump from wikivoyage, I can provide the content of ro.wikitravel from the beginning of September. Unfortunately I don't also have the full history, only a list of contributors--Strainu (talk) 16:48, 24 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, but so far there are no problems (just delay :P). --MF-W 16:53, 24 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, do you have any news on this? Thanks.--Strainu (talk) 21:31, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I do; currently I am waiting for the developers to create the wikis in Spanish and Portuguese so that the import of them can be done. Afterwards I will immediately turn to Romanian Wikivoyage. --MF-W 23:03, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Settings[edit]

We are getting nearer to the creation of the project (the XML files are coming closer to me, so to say :P ). Therefore, please check if the settings above in the box are all correct or discuss them if necessary. --MF-W 00:28, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

They are correct.--Strainu (talk) 22:10, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
