Requests for new languages/Wikivoyage Spanish

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
submitted verification final decision

This proposal has been approved.
The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project.

A committee member provided the following comment:

The language is clearly eligible. — For the creation of the project, dumps will be made avaiable so that this project can be approved soon with the content of Spanish Wikitravel & the work from Incubator (see also incubator:I:Wikivoyage import / RNL#Wikivoyage. --MF-W 00:23, 27 November 2012 (UTC) -- Creation now requested in bugzilla:42933. --MF-W 23:34, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code es (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Spanish Language name in English
Language name español Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality no indication Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name Wikiviajes "Wikivoyage" in your language
Project namespace Wikiviajes usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace Wikiviajes discusión "Wikivoyage talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo File:WikiVoyage-logo.svg This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone UTC "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
submit Phabricator task. It will include everything automatically, except additional namespaces/settings. After creating the task, add a link to the comment.

Proposal[edit]

Spanish editors are part of a very large community, even with differente time zones. This community has every Wikimedia project in their language and contributes on them on a daily basis (even on multilingual projects like Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata). I'm sure they'll also contribute to this new project with enthusiasm. --RalgisWM-CR 15:58, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

  • I don't oppose, but except Spanish Wikipedia the rest of the Spanish projects are not that actively mantained nor editted. I'd preferr not to have another abandoned project just to have it. Perhaps we should start a Incubator test project first. Regards. -- MarcoAurelio (talk) 16:03, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Per this message from the Deputy Director, no Wikivoyage is going to be opened without an active test project on the Incubator. We need to start a test project there. -- MarcoAurelio (talk) 16:17, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • I agree with MarcoAurelio. Sister projects of Wikipedia in Spanish are too inactive. I'm sorry, but I think a Wikivoyage in Spanish will not be a good idea. --invadinado (Tell me) 16:45, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • (Sorry for my comment in French) Je ne suis pas d'accord avec MarcoAurelio. Tokvo (talk) 18:54, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
      • (Sorry for my bad French, too much time w/o writting) Merci. Cordialement, -- MarcoAurelio (talk) 23:30, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
      • You (I mean, MarcoAurelio and Invadinado) are assuming that the Wikimedia community has a fixed size and that adding a new project will distract the current Wikipedia editors. I don't believe that. On the contrary, maybe the new project will attract new contributors, and eventually drive some of them to Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, etc. I'm guessing, yes, just like you are doing. Patricio.lorente (talk) 22:31, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support the creation of this new project in Spanish--Rosymonterrey (talk) 07:10, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
MercurioMT (talk) 20:18, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • A favor. Dorieo (talk) 21:52, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. We mustn't measure activity of non-english Wikimedia projects with the rule of en.wikipedia. And it's needed to say that the case of other spanish Wikimedia projects different to Wikipedia are not stopped, simply they have low-level development wich is quite different. Salvador alc (talk) 22:32, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Comment MarcoAurelio, according to the statement by the WMF Deputy Director, what's the purpose of this request? To create a Spanish Wikivoyage in the Incubator? I mean, if the Incubator site is already working, I understand this requests is not needed anymore and only encouraging from Spanish-speaking projects and, maybe, promotion from local chapters in Spanish-speaking countries would be needed. If successful, Spanish Wikivoyage will go live. Otherwise, it won't. Am I missing anything? --Ecemaml (talk) 23:41, 12 November 2012 (UTC) PS: on the other hand, have you got updated information about the migration of pictures to commons?[reply]
    • Hola Ecemaml. -- MarcoAurelio (talk) 17:13, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I would say that es.wikivoyage is going to have more activity than the other little projects becuase of its goal, I strongly support it. --Pownerus (talk) 00:22, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm still surprised that there has to be a process to create a project on the second largest language in the world. Probably, Spanish projects are not the most successful but they are not dead; in fact, all the Spanish versions are in the top 5 of most visited editions on each project and in the top 10 of more contributions except Wiktionary [1]. Will be Wikivoyage in Spanish successful? I don't know, but it won't be dead. Spanish Wikitravel had almost 2,000 articles, similar in magnitude with the French, Italian, Portuguese and Polish version and bigger than the Swedish version (which has already a WV version). I don't know how long will you wait to move from the Incubator... but certainly it won't take off as long as it is in the Incubator, which is probably the most annoying place to edit. --Osmar Valdebenito, B1mbo (talk) 00:53, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Please see above in the box: I'm currently figuring out with people from Wikivoyage how we can best transfer the pages from Spanish Wikitravel. Probably we will be able to do it until the end of the week, so es.wikivoyage.org can start then. --MF-W 10:59, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Settings[edit]

We are getting nearer to the creation of the project (the XML files are coming closer to me, so to say :P ). Therefore, please check if the settings above in the box are all correct or discuss them if necessary. --MF-W 00:23, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Everything seems to be fine, thanks MF! Patricio.lorente (talk) 00:28, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, thank you! - We need to address what the Project name will be. "Wikiviajes", "Wikidestinos"? Regards. -- MarcoAurelio (talk) 14:11, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
“Wikiviajes” would be a name closer to “Wikivoyage”. However, some feel that the name should remain untranslated. I prefer it to be in Spanish. --RalgisWM-CR 16:16, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Patricio.lorente (talk) 17:37, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
También creo que "Wikiviajes" es mejor. --Racso ¿¿¿??? 16:33, 2 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wikiviajes me parece bien también --Osmar Valdebenito, B1mbo (talk) 18:41, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think would be better the "timezone" on this wiki is UTC. Because Spain not only edits on this wiki, unless, several countries in different continents. In all our sister projects and main wiki have this setting. Regards --Ignacio (talk) 21:19, 11 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Support. Spanish editors are important but just a fraction of all who edit on Spanish language. --RalgisWM-CR 23:01, 11 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Any news about this? --Racso ¿¿¿??? 15:29, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Forget it; just saw this. --Racso ¿¿¿??? 15:33, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The wiki seems operational right now, thanks!. Can the text in the logo ("Wiki [V]oyage") be translated to spanish ("Wiki [V]iajes") so it matches the wiki name? It would be an analog case to, for example, Wikinoticias. Thanks! --Racso ¿¿¿??? 21:37, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
