| Discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Votes will be ignored when judging the proposal. Please provide arguments or reasons and be prepared to defend them (see the Language proposal policy).
The language committee needs to verify the language is eligible to be approved. |
- The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
- The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
- The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
| What | Value | Example / Explanation |
|---|
| Proposal | ||
|---|---|---|
| Language code | yud (SIL, Glottolog) | A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ... |

Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed. |
| Directionality | RTL | Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)? |

| Project namespace | Wiktionary | usually the same as the project name |
| Project talk namespace | Wiktionary_talk | "Wiktionary talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace) |
| Enable uploads | no | Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons. If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons. |

[edit]Rationale for the creation of the Judeo-Tripolitanian Arabic Wiktionary (yud)
1. Linguistic Classification and Cultural Significance
- Judeo-Tripolitanian Arabic (ISO 639-3: yud) is a distinct Semitic language historically spoken by the Jewish community of Libya. While linguistically part of the Maghrebi Judeo-Arabic continuum, it possesses unique phonological, morphological, and lexical features that differentiate it from the Muslim Libyan dialects.
- Orthography: Unlike local Libyan Arabic, this language has a centuries-old tradition of being written exclusively in the Hebrew script.
- Cultural Heritage: The language serves as the primary vehicle for a vast corpus of liturgical translations (Sharḥ), folk literature, and community records.
2. Current Status and Endangerment Following the mass migrations of the 20th century, the majority of native speakers now reside in Israel and Italy.
- Endangerment: The language is currently classified as "Endangered" by linguists. While it remains a living language among the older and middle-aged generations, there is a significant risk of linguistic attrition among the youth.
- Need for Documentation: There is a critical lack of centralized, open-access digital content in Judeo-Tripolitanian, which hinders efforts to revitalize the language for future generations.
3. Strategic Objectives of the Wiktionary Project The establishment of a dedicated Wiktionary (וִיקִי-קָאמוּס) will achieve several key goals:
- Building the Foundational Lexicon: A Wiktionary provides the ideal entry point for language revitalization. Documenting words, roots, expressions, and grammar structures creates the essential linguistic repository required for all future digital media in the language.
- Accessible Micro-Contributions: Lowering the threshold for participation enables native speakers, researchers, and community members to make meaningful contributions—even through short vocabulary entries—without the barrier of writing full encyclopedic texts.
- Standardization of Orthography: By providing a structured platform for word-level documentation in the Hebrew script, the project will help formalize modern Judeo-Tripolitanian spelling conventions and phonetic transcriptions.
- Catalytic Stepping Stone: Building a comprehensive, high-quality Wiktionary serves as a powerful foundational layer. It establishes a active contributor base and a standardized vocabulary that can directly catalyze and support broader future initiatives, including a full Wikipedia project in Judeo-Tripolitanian Arabic.
- Cross-Border Collaboration: This platform will bridge the gap between the Israeli and Italian branches of the community, allowing for a collaborative preservation effort that respects regional dialectal variations.
4. Project Viability There is a growing interest within the community and among researchers to document the language.
- Resources: The project will draw upon existing primary sources, traditional translations (Sharḥ), oral traditions, and historical communal dictionaries to ensure linguistic authenticity.
- The Incubator Phase: We intend to utilize the Wikimedia Incubator to systematically build a rich dictionary, focusing on high-quality lexical entries, root categorizations, and usage examples that demonstrate the richness of the language.
