Invitation

As an Administrator, you are allowed into #wikimedia-admin, the cross-wiki coordination channel for Wikimedia administrators. Any member of the channel can invite you in temporarily, but you need an invite exemption from a channel operator to get in whenever you want. Please come to #wikimedia-stewards and ask for an invite.

Any admin from any project is welcome and it is a good place for cross-wiki coordination of vandal and spam fighting. It is also useful for new admins to contact more experienced admins in real-time to get help with the more complicated admin tasks such as history merges/splits and importing via Special:Import.

Please remember to translate the interface at translatewiki: only and to upload images preferably at commons:

Done until 01 February 2008. We have discussed this on IRC, and ArielGlenn and he wish to import infrastructure (like help, project, and template pages) from other Greek projects. In addition, I think it's important to have at least one administrator on the project to deal with any abuse or spam, particularly since some malicious editors in the past specifically targeted new wikis with no administrators. Bureaucrat access

Dungodung@srwiktionary

I request bureaucrat access on this wiki.

The reason is this: Since sr:wikt:User:Kaster willingly gave away his bureaucrat and administrator status last year, sr:wikt:User:Горан Анђелковић is the only bureaucrat left on the project. I tried contacting him some 10 days ago, but he hasn't responded yet. His last edit was in March, 2006. I organized a voting procedure within the small community and since December 26, three users have voted in favor ("За") and none against. I'm already a sysop there, so I hereby request the bureaucrat status on the Serbian Wiktionary. Thank you. --filip 17:08, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Spanish Wikinews

I request sysop (admin/bureaucrat) access.

We have a problem at the Spanish Wikinews. My request for adminship (and, by default, bureaucratship), which remained open for 14 days, was closed as "failed" by local bureaucrat n:es:Usuario:Superzerocool, even though there was consensus to promote: the result of the vote (yes, it is a vote) was 3 supports, one oppose, and two neutral (75% support), but the bureaucrat decided that one support and the oppose were invalid, so the actual result is 2/0/2 (100% support). There are only two active sysops there; the one who closed the request and another, who is nowhere to be found. The user who closed the request refuses to promote, even tough he has been confronted by the community here. When asked to explain the reason for his decision, he said that, because the two neutral votes where cast by users with more edits (~700) than those who supported (~100), they were more important, and, therefore, there was no consensus. I therefore request a steward to review the decision, as this ignoring of the will of the community is unacceptable. Thank you. --Agüeybaná (hábleme) 18:32, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Generally, we can not override decisions of local bureaucrats. And, two votes (even 4) is not enough that a valid community decision is visible. We would probably not even promote then if there was no local bureaucrat. I personally think that the community is too small to need own local bureaucrats. --Thogo (talk) 18:40, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
I have no problem with being granted sysop rights only. It's just that, as with the Spanish Wikipedia, both sysop and bureaucrat rights are granted.

Russian Wikinews

I request bureaucrat access.

Thank you. <Flrntalk> 11:41, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Two support votes and one oppose vote is, I'm afraid, not something I call consensus. That and not very big voter turnout and your failed RfA on ru: all suggest that maybe we should wait some time before you are granted the bureaucrat rights on Wikinews. You should probably hold another RfB on Wikinews in a few months or so. But this is my opinion. Let's wait for another steward, shall we? Thanks --FiLiP ¤ 11:59, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
From my basic knowledge of Russian alphabet (and the similarity between Polish and Russian languages) I see that ru.wikinews has 426 user accounts and 2 admins - they were elected somehow, so I can't see why the vote shouldn't produce more results - at least enough to qualify it as bonding. Plus, Filip's reservations quoted above suggest a bit more of delay. Wojciech Pędzich Talk 12:08, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Steinbach at stq.wikipedia

Hi, I would like to request bureaucrat status on the Saterfrisian Wikipedia. I have the consent of the community: see here. As the community is very small, there is little need to wait for a considerable time. I am not likely to be denied this status. On top of that, we have no admins yet so we need a user with extended access very badly. Steinbach (formerly Caesarion) 15:23, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Lord_Anubis@ar wiktionary

I request bureaucrat access. This is because our current (and only) bureaucrat (Chaos) has not contributed since Sep 2007, and although i know that he is available on WikiSource and Wikipedia, his unavailability on Wiktionary caused one of our users wikt:ar:User:OsamaK to come to meta to obtain a bot flag due to lack of bureaucrats.

I am already a sysop on there (and on Wikipedia-ar), and at the moment, from where i am standing, the community is semi-dead, and i am trying to do a lot of automated work with bots single-handedly.

Having a second bureaucrat would facilitate the process of granting bot-flags to more interwiki bot users (Something we need to do), for the time being.

Thank you. --Lord Anubis 15:09, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Not done Without community there is no need for a bureaucrat. You can request bot flags and username changes here on Meta. And without a community decision we can't give you bureaucrat rights. --Thogo (talk) 15:11, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Oversight access at the Swedish Wikipedia

At the Swedish Wikipedia we've decided we want some local users with oversight access. Three candidates have been approved by the community. What else is needed for them to get oversight access? Boivie 07:54, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

They need to at least identify to the WMF (send some sort of ID to Cary: cbass at wikimedia d0t org). I'm not really sure about other quirks regarding this particular user right. --FiLiP ¤ 07:57, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

I've asked Andejons to identify himself/herself to Cary. Caesar should already be identified as a Checkuser, and I believe MoRsE also is identified (maybe as a member of the svwiki ArbCom). --Boivie 08:48, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
I have identified myself for the Swedish arbcom, but I am not sure if this information has been sent forward here. However, I can send a mail to Cary Bass with a scanned copy of my ID and some additional contact information just to make sure. -- (MoRsE) MoRsE 10:38, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Thank you. ברוקולי 18:08, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but something doesn't add up. The link you provided is solely for the removal of Yoni's sysop rights. He doesn't have them anymore and that is fine. But I can't see any evidence/reason for removing the bot's sysop rights. Is it a policy of hewiki to remove sysop status of bots after the owner loses the bit or is there a discussion elsewhere regarding the status of this particular bot? You mention that the "rights [...] should be revoked [...] according to the vote and his own request". Here's the thing: I can't see the vote (you provided a vote for desysopping Yoni) nor Yoni's request (the diff prior to the one you provided shows Yoni confirming that he wants to relieve himself of the sysop rights, but it, again, doesn't mention the bot). The bot should probably lose the rights (and if there's need, a bureaucrat would sysop it again), but I'd just like to get things clear before doing anything. Thanks and sorry for being overly bureaucratic with this. --FiLiP ¤ 19:56, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
Thats OK. The thing is that the bureaucrats of he.wiki have reached a consensus between them that they want to revoke all the special rights of Yoni. According to the he.wiki community rules, dealing with bot accounts is solely within the jurisdiction of the bureaucrats. In addition, it feels wrong that the community voted on this matter and he asked to remove his sysop rights, yet he is keeping them through his bot account. Not to mention that he abused the sysop rights of the bot by looking at deleted versions of an article, deleting hunderds of unused photos without asking the uploaders and editing the main page of he.wiki .
If it helps, I can make sure that one of the bureaucrats will post here a request of his own.
I have started a procedure to desysop Yonidebot, but I was told that there is a problem because Yonidebot is not a regular sysop, and the protocol of desysoping in he.wiki doesn't include the possibility of bot desysoping. I was advised by one of the sysops to ask this from the stewards because our bureaucrats can't do this. I assure you that this problem will be fixed asap after the thing with Yonidebest will be solved. Thanks for the help so far, ברוקולי 21:07, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
I agree with Dungodung here. He was granted bot+sysop per he.wiki-community, thus this status can only be removed in consensus of this community (not by a single user or bureaucrat), or if he abused his sysop tools, which I can't see, no blocks, no recent deletions, there seems to be no emergency to remove that urgently. I suggest You make a vote on he.wiki and then come back then, thanks for Your understanding, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 21:16, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
The problem is that protocol for desysoping a user refers only to a regular sysop and not to a bot account. As i have said, the bureaucrats are the only users in he.wiki that deals with bot accounts (according to the he.wiki rules). It is thier choice, therefore, whether a user will keep his bot flag or not. ברוקולי 21:22, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, Your community has to improvise then, we will not make a decision for them. The sysop bit was removed in June 2007 and it has not bothered anyone until now that his bot is still sysop. I encourage stewards to ignore this. The user has control of his account, and is simply retired. There is no local policy to remove retired users, and Rudget did not state anywhere he wanted his tools removed. Majorly (talk) 17:09, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

Ausir CU access on Meta

Based on my last this may require more consideration (or not!). From a number of perspectives I request the removal of Ausir's CU rights here on Meta. Ausir is no longer a Checkuser on any project, he is no longer a steward, there was no community decision to grant these rights and due to policy on inactivity removal seems required. He was added to the Meta group here probably based on being a steward by the look of the edit.

In fairness I should point out that one steward does not agree with me here however I see no logic or valid explanation in the comment. CU is a sensitive area of the project and such information should only be open to those who have the rights or some particular need.

Thanks --Herby talk thyme 15:20, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

I guess the access was given only for CU log access which he obviously doesn't need any more after resignation as steward and checkuser. Did he ever used it for a CU request on Meta? --Thogo (talk) 16:04, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
There is nothing in the log for Ausir except the self check on pl wiki 6 months or so ago (back past December 2006). To me it was almost certainly granted in respect of steward rights and I can find nothing to suggest otherwise. In practice it seems wrong for someone to have "log" access when they no longer have any CU function as I see it? --Herby talk thyme 16:28, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
You know my opinion already, but let me repeat/clearify. This is about a request for removal of access. That means that there have to be either a rule that tells whether it can be removed, either a request by the user self, either by community consensus. In this case I think that to gain consensus in the meta community would be the logical way. Otherwise a steward would be making the decision. In any case, this is not an urgent request, so I see not a reason either to follow emergency procedures. Unless you think gaining local (meta) consensus would take far too long? Effeietsanders 16:41, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
I must make this clear - I understand this page to be for the granting and removal of rights under any circumstances - this is no emergency and not phrased as such. The problem with CU is that only CU people can see the log. It seems to me to be clearly within policy to remove the rights. I can only see that these right were granted as a result of being a steward, that is no longer the case. CU information is treated as highly confidential & rightly so. As Meta does not look to have been consulted anywhere I am unsure why Meta needs to be consulted over removal --Herby talk thyme 16:47, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
I just set up a one week confirmation on RfA. Most active members of this community will share their opinion then, and if the community decides to keep him as CU, why not. If it decides to remove the access, we have something to base on. I guess, one week more or less will not hurt anyone. --Thogo (talk) 18:09, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
I will do that (although it will be tomorrow probably). However there are only three elected checkusers on Meta and I see no reason why any more would be needed. Specified as "for log access" (the implication being "only") it seemed (& still does) to me that this is merely tidying up after the removal of stewards rights that has been overlooked. I do think it completely right that stewards should all have "log access" --Herby talk thyme 18:17, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Hehe, edit conflict. ;O) Yes, stewards can have log access. We can just give ourselves CU access and remove it after accessing the log. That's the way I would do it. --Thogo (talk) 18:18, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Yes, but I think Herby meant without doing changing rights. Perhaps just this is what Ausir had done [7], what is perfectly ok, but since he was not elected I find it now a bit strange to vote for removal, kind regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 18:25, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

This seems pretty open and shut to me, rather than a matter for an actual decision by a steward. If CU on meta was given to a user so they can carry out their steward duties, as part of becoming a steward, then when we remove stewardship, we remove CU on meta as well. I see we have started a discussion on it, but I'd prefer the precedent being set that discussion is not needed. Having given an opinion on it though, I hereby declare that I won't be the steward actually removing the CU access in this particular case to avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest. ++Lar: t/c 22:15, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

I know, I don't count :), but I think this is a pretty obvious case. Ausir was a steward, got checkuser as a part of that, not as separate right (in fact, Ausir +CU'd himself). So since Ausir is no longer a steward, he doesn't need to have CU, nor should he have it, since he had it as a part of being a steward, which he no longer is. So hurry up and deCU him. Inactive Commons Checkusers

In view of the policy on inactivity I request removal of the rights of two inactive checkusers on Commons.

The log shows that Arnomane has made no checks in the past twelve months. Ausir's only check in over twelve months is a self check on pl wiki which does not constitute activity on Commons.

The community were given notice that this request would be made here. No objections have been raised and the most active local checkusers agree with this. I have notified the users concerned on their talk pages (here & here) and thanked them for their work in the past.

The policy seems quite clear to me however if I have made any mistakes in this I'm sure someone will let me know! Thanks --Herby talk thyme 13:38, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

policy clear and Done--Nick1915 - all you want 13:43, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Not for me. Both users are still active on Commons. I guess the policy is dealing with inactive accounts, which for me means "inactive at all". --Thogo (talk) 13:44, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
PL wiki just requested similar in the past few days & it was done (in practice Ausir removed himself just before steward rights were removed). To me (as Nick) the policy related to CU specifically not any form of general activity --Herby talk thyme 13:46, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
So the policy is not well-formulated. It clearly says "Any user account with checkuser status that is inactive for more than a year will see their checkuser access be removed." which means that the account has to be inactive (a status can't be inactive per sense of the word). --Thogo (talk) 13:49, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
I based my request on this one? --Herby talk thyme 13:53, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
@Thogo: I'd understand the Checkuser_policy#Removal_of_access as Herby and Nick did, but it is not my mother tounge, maybe it would be nice to make this one missunderstandable, kind regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 13:56, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Ok. Anyway, if usually CU access is removed when people do not use it (which I fully support), the policy should just be slightly rewritten so that it becomes clearer what is meant actually. :o) --Thogo (talk) 14:02, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
I saw the post on Commons. I did not respond because I agreed with the general thinking that it is best for tools to be removed it they are not used. Now closer reading of the policy on meta does make the policy seem less clear that it must be removed per lack of use. I think this needs to be clarified since it could have broader implications for larger projects that almost automatically give CU to certain groups who are determined to be trusted users (such as Wikipedia English Arbitration Committee.) FloNight 14:20, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Very valid point & should be clarified. Personally I have always seen local Arbcom rules as overriding the "default" policy here (after all Arbcom rights are rather more "granted" than elected by the community in some senses & on some wikis). Taking those with elected CUs it would be rare for there to be no opportunity to use the rights in a whole year (personally I would favour something rather shorter as a period) and the community should be informed/allowed to comment as should other active Checkusers (as was the case here). This in no way should be seen as not appreciating teh service given but people move on sadly. --Herby talk thyme 14:39, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
The basic reasons for removing due to inactivity would be the same whether the CUer was elected, appointed by ArbCom, or has the rights due to another position. With the exception of having access to read the logs, (which might be a legitimate reason for keeping in some circumstances especially for ArbCom members because they oversee CU abuse allegations), there probably is no difference. The wording of the policy does not speak clearly as to who should be patrolling for inactivity, be it an elected CU or one appointed by ArbCom. Since only CUers can see the logs to know about level of access, it seems that this policy has a good chance of not being followed out of indifference. I think discussion about this is off topic for this location so will take it to a more appropriate venue. FloNight 18:09, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Por eso me presento para ser administrador de esto. Muchas gracias. Excuse me for not being able to write in English. Good bye! Bengoa

The local request link doesn't exist. For which purpose do you request the sysop access? --Thogo (talk) 16:09, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

You need to specify a duration. Temporary adminship cannot be granted for an undetermined amount of time. Thank you, Redux 19:00, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
2 weeks would do, please also give import rights (need to import pages from the test project). Thanks. - Teak 20:25, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
The tasks you specified, without any further clarification, doesn't seem to justify 2 weeks. I'm granting one week temporary adminship. If you need more at the end of this, please make a note, and we can consider an extension. If you already have reason to believe that it would indeed take longer, you can post now, and I can change the deadline if necessary. Redux 20:48, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, I'd never done an import before, so didn't know what it would take to do, hence the 2 weeks (thought it might require a change in import settings). Done with the import (remove the import access please), though would like to keep the sysop status for regular admin chores, since there is no permanent sysop yet. Will make a local RfA for a permanent one. - Teak 02:36, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

Import rights have been revoked, as requested. Your temporary adminship remains until December 2nd, for the time being. If you start a local procedure for permanent adminship, please provide a link to the local page and a short explanation, and you may request an extension of your temporary adminship for the duration of the vote. If you are appointed, your temporary adminship will simply be converted into permanent adminship. Redux 18:00, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Local RfA request. The closing date of the vote is open (expecting a minimum of 3 votes), since the project is new. Please extend the temporary adminship till January 1st, 08, so that regular sysop chores can be taken care of locally. Thanks. ― Teak 13:53, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Request for rollbacker status, unable to grant locally due to at sign in username.

Thank you. Random832 15:04, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Wait.. can stewards grant rollbacker from Meta? I had the feeling rollback was only added an enwiki. And even if it was implemented here, I have a feeling (just a feeling) stewards wouldn't be able to give it either (bug), Majorly (talk) 15:14, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
No, they can't. The 'rollback' permission can't be granted from Meta. And, I confirm that it is impossible to grant anything to this user due to reported bug. --Zirland 15:17, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
I guess we'll just have to wait for the devs to fix the bug, or the user to get a rename (his userpage does indicate he intended to be renamed eventually). Withdrawn/impossible Random832 15:21, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Same problem for stewards, the '@' character is used to specify the database name. Ask local bureaucrats to retry specifying the user ID (yours is 525077) in Special:Userrights (they need to enter #525077 in the username field). --.anaconda 16:03, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
I just tried this method and it did not work properly. Nakon 16:48, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
I tried this method on meta and also on cs.wb, where I am bct and it seems to work. Nakon, what did not work for you? --Zirland 16:54, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Did You try with an account with an @ in it, he is right, it does not work, Error is: "You do not have permission to edit user rights on other wikis." It seems the only possibility is renaming or maybe the devs can help, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 17:12, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
There is no '@' in userID. En.wiki bct needs to simply enter #525077 to input field of en:Special:Userrights. That is all. It will result in this page. It worked for me on other projects. --Zirland 17:16, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Yep, no @ in the userid but it changes to the username as soon as You press enter to grant the right, and then gives the error, Zirland, did You try with @'s in accountnames? Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 17:24, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Ah, it changes the name then? I see... So it is impossible situation evidently. Spacebirdy, I tried it with names without @, 'coz I know no other @ username on any project. Best --Zirland 17:29, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

For completeness, I'll add that changing the name back to #525077 (using firebug to edit the hidden form field) invalidates the token. so, it's impossible. Random832 18:26, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

What about changing the username name temporarily as a workaround? An en:wp 'crat would be able to do that... (this leaves aside why a username with an @ is allowed, I thought they were discouraged on en:wp, but that's not a matter for us here) ++Lar: t/c 18:51, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps it was created before usernames with @ were not allowed.--Shanel 21:07, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Maybe a bureaucrat can change his name, then set the flag and then change his name back... *run* --Thogo (talk) 15:27, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
That's what I was suggesting! Sorry if I wasn't clear :) ++Lar: t/c 15:31, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
Do not try that, you will not be able to rename the user to an invalid username (with @ in it). One idea: a steward could grant themselves Steward rights on enwiki, then add the rollbacker right to J.sweeton@wnri.com@enwiki, from enwiki and that might work. Also reported as bug 12602 Prodego talk 18:57, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
No, it doesn't run, just tried--Nick1915 - all you want 19:53, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
@Prodego: This worked fine on is.wikt, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 19:54, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
That is interesting, it shouldn't be doing that. I would test it on enwiki before doing it, just in case though. Prodego talk 21:04, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
Just to remark on this, since I happened to stop by, users with @ signs just should be renamed and left renamed. The @ sign conflicts with the naming conventions that will be used for SUL. If they are not renamed now, they will be sometime before SUL rolls out anyway, so you may as well rename them now (if they have few enough edits). Therefore, I don't anticipate that Userrights will be changed to allow users with '@' in their name to be renamed. With more paid developers apparently being added in the coming year, I'm optimistic that SUL will get implemented before 2009, even though it doesn't have a good track record on that.

It's a bug that Special:Renameuser will rename people to a name that's invalid for creation. I've fixed it in rev:29674, so it's not going to work for much longer. —Simetrical (talk • contribs) 00:07, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

done, granted locally by bureaucrat en:User:WJBscribe following rename request. Random832 16:44, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Monobi@mediawiki.org (import)

I'm a bureaucrat at mediawiki.org. My user page there confirms that this is in fact my Meta account. mw:User:Monobi would like to help importing MediaWiki-related pages from Meta, but bureaucrats can't currently add or remove the import group (Mediazilla:12605), and I'm reluctant to make him a sysop. I would appreciate it if someone would give him the import group.

Thank you. —Simetrical (talk • contribs) 23:45, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but import access only makes it possible to upload and import xml files. For interwiki import, you'd still need sysop status. If you indeed wanted this kind of import for him, then OK, but sysops don't have access to it. --FiLiP ¤ 23:49, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
Perhaps you're correct. I'll double-check. If this is the case, I'll ask for a new usergroup to be created (that's addable and removable by bureaucrats). —Simetrical (talk • contribs) 23:53, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
Is this supposed to be Monobi? Majorly (talk) 23:54, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
Yup, fixed :) Mønobi 23:55, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I confirm it's Monobi. —Simetrical (talk • contribs) 00:08, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
So, this is Not done (by stewards, at least) per mw:Special:Listusers/transwiki and bugzilla:12605#c7. --FiLiP ¤ 09:12, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
