Research:User Engagement with the App Explore Feed

The Wikimedia Apps team is working to revamp the Explore Feed in the Wikipedia mobile apps to better meet the needs and expectations of both current and future app users. Since its launch five years ago, engagement with the feed has declined, while users’ expectations have increasingly been shaped by more visually dynamic and interactive content experiences on other platforms.
This study examines how both current and prospective app users perceive the Explore Feed and its existing features, what types of content and experiences motivate engagement, and which elements should be prioritized as part of a redesign.
Using a combination of a short in-app survey and contextual interviews, the research insights will inform design and feature development for an updated Explore Feed, supporting the broader Consumer Strategy goal (WE 3.1) of engaging new audiences.
Methods
[edit]- In-app survey: A short in-app survey was conducted with existing Wikipedia app users to understand Explore Feed usage, feature awareness, and desired improvements.
- Interviews with first-time app users: Contextual interviews were conducted with participants recruited from Userlytics with no prior experience with the Wikipedia app. These interviews explored feed habits and usage from other apps, reactions to the Wikipedia App Explore Feed, and feedback on early redesign concepts.
Privacy Policy
[edit]Survey respondents were presented with the survey privacy policy prior to the first survey question. Interview participants were recruited via the Userlytics platform and participated under its terms and policies.
