Research:Wikipedia as a Pedagogical Tool in Higher Education: Mapping Research, Systematization, and Analysis of Experiences
This page documents a research project in progress.
Information may be incomplete and change as the project progresses.
Please contact the project lead before formally citing or reusing results from this page.
This research project aims to map, systematize, and analyze educational experiences that use Wikipedia as a teaching and learning tool in universities worldwide. The project was funded by the Wikimedia Movement Strategy Fund, as described here.
Although initiatives involving Wikipedia as a pedagogical tool in university contexts have existed since 2003, the documentation of these experiences is generally scattered and poorly systematized, making it difficult for academics interested in collaborating on the platform to reproduce methodological processes. Often, the only accessible trace after the activities are completed consists of a Wikipedia page that centralizes basic information about the initiative, a set of photos on Wikimedia Commons, or raw data collected by tools such as the Programs and Events Dashboard.
Thus, this research aims to strengthen the conditions for developing coordinated and structured projects that incorporate Wikipedia as an active resource in higher education. Despite significant differences between university contexts around the world, the global mapping aims to bring plural perspectives and diverse strategies that have proven effective in different regions. The final product of this research will be a didactic book tailored to the specificities of the Brazilian university system and divided into the eight major areas of knowledge according to the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq): Exact and Earth Sciences; Biological Sciences; Engineering; Health Sciences; Agricultural Sciences; Linguistics, Languages and Arts; Applied Social Sciences; and Human Sciences.
Methods
[edit]Describe in this section the methods you'll be using to conduct your research. If the project involves recruiting Wikimedia/Wikipedia editors for a survey or interview, please describe the suggested recruitment method and the size of the sample. Please include links to consent forms, survey/interview questions and user-interface mock-ups.
Timeline
[edit]Please provide in this section a short timeline with the main milestones and deliverables (if any) for this project.
Policy, Ethics and Human Subjects Research
[edit]It's very important that researchers do not disrupt Wikipedians' work. Please add to this section any consideration relevant to ethical implications of your project or references to Wikimedia policies, if applicable. If your study has been approved by an ethical committee or an institutional review board (IRB), please quote the corresponding reference and date of approval.
Results
[edit]Describe the results and their implications here. We encourage you to share preliminary data. Don't forget to make status=complete above when you are done.
