Research talk:Perception on rules, values and motivation structure of Wikidata contributors

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

What is general research question of the interview study?[edit]

This should be clear in the introduction. Imagine a Wikidata editor reviews this proposal and only reads the lead section and nothing else. They should know, basically, what you are doing. Here, it's less important to write an introduction to a research paper/grant proposal and more important to communicate what you're studying and an brief overview of your methods. The "Anticipated Contribution" section seems to include the goal of the study. --Halfak (WMF) (talk) 14:33, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure you need the "About Wikidata" section[edit]

Maybe link to Wikidata:Introduction if you'd like to keep it --Halfak (WMF) (talk) 14:33, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, I have linked the introduction of Wikidata under that section. --Chuankaz (talk) 21:52, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mixed focus[edit]

From reading the description, it seems like you are interested in:

  • Newcomers experience with quality control actions and the effects on their motivation.
  • Editor's motivations WRT contributing to Wikidata
  • The experience of mixed participation between Wikipedia and Wikidata.

This seems like it is too broad for a study. What is the primary focus here? --Halfak (WMF) (talk) 14:33, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I should have make it more clear. The main contribution of this project is to understand if Wikidata editors have knowledge about how their contributions are going to be used outside Wikimedia community and how does knowing(or not knowing) the information affect editors' editing activity. Although we would also like to know how users perceive the rules and quality control actions along with their motivations of contributing, this would be a secondary contribution. --Chuankaz (talk) 21:57, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Chuankaz, why do you need to recruit editors who edit both Wikipedia and Wikidata to answer this question? --Halfak (WMF) (talk) 20:40, 28 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Halfak (WMF) , we'd like to hear from editors in Wikipedia as they may have knowledge in how their contribution will be used in Wikipedia. Which will be a contrast of the situation in Wikidata. Also Wikipedia will serve as a good comparison example when talking about rules and motivation in editing Wikidata. Our main target is Wikidata editors but I think most Wikidata editors may have experience in editing Wikipedia as well?

Drafting an invitation[edit]

I started a template for an invitation to post on Wikidata here: Research:Perception_on_rules,_values_and_motivation_structure_of_Wikidata&Wikipedia_contributors/Invite. Please complete it and we can review before you post. --Halfak (WMF) (talk) 15:31, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Halfak (WMF) I have finished the recruitment invitation. Feel free to edit and give suggestions. Also let me know where to post the message..
