A typo in a year[edit]

@Jullienn: In this revision Special:PermaLink/24545307 the ending date for the project has five digits instead of four. Please verify it. :) CiaPan (talk) 10:32, 13 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Right, sorry. Thanks for your vigilance! Jullienn (talk) 14:32, 13 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Motivation of contributors[edit]

Hello,

Thanks for the notification on the mailinglist today. It sounds very interesting! - One idea about questions: I noticed that past surveys have asked about the motivation to edit Wikipedia.

It seems to me that you often get answers that are socially desirable. That is, the answerers say they edit Wikipedia because they like to help others, because they want to share their knowledge, etc.

But it could be that motives also play a role, which meet less with positive reactions in society. For example: someone likes to edit Wikipedia because they like to correct other people, because it is a way to exercise power, or to impose one's own opinion etc.

It is certainly difficult to get behind such "negative" (socially undesirable or awkward) motivations through a survey. Perhaps it is possible to ask vicarious questions, or to ask whether one, as an answerer, believes that there are "many others" who have such motives.

Insights into "negative" motivations can help with the topic area of harassment, or indirectly with recruiting new contributors.

Regarding Wikipedia content: I find it interesting what topics contributors like to write about, and with what motives. Miquel i Ribé published his dissertation on this topic in 2016: In his opinion, cultural identities are important, which he bases on the fact that a high proportion of articles in Wikipedia language versions deal with "local" topics. Here, too, knowledge about motives can help when addressing potential new contributors.

I myself am currently interested in whether Wikipedians particularly like to write about "local" content of "their own culture" or whether they find that their Wikipedia language version should cover all topics equally well. This has to do with cultural identities and with the vision of the ideal encyclopedia. Especially a small language version may show its added value mainly in the fact that it represents the "own" living environment well.

Hello @Ziko. I share your conserns and We will go beyond "social" motives sure (look at the questionnaire, hope that you'll find pertinent)! The things about local contents are interesting, we plan a second survey and we surely can work on that with you. Let's talk! Jullienn (talk) 08:16, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that would be interesting! Thanks for your response. Ziko (talk) 08:38, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Country of residence[edit]

There was no listing for Taiwan, which is a very important issue for people (like me) who live there!!!! Danforth Baker (talk) 10:04, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The list includes a country called "Beautiful". Some cleanup is needed. Cabayi (talk) 11:03, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
yes, it was a test; Taiwan has been added (not in the French wikipedia list of countries ;-) but in the English it is) Jullienn (talk) 08:57, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Time-out[edit]

I spent 15 minutes or so answering this survey's questions, then was called away to attend to a domestic issue for a few minutes. When I returned, I spent another few minutes answering the questions on the current page, hit "next", and was told:

We are sorry but your session has expired.

I therefore advise people to avoid this egregious waste of time. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:39, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Pigsonthewing. As said in the village pump, this is a server setting we are going to change (we do no want to put cookies). I am very sorry for that, it's true it's a stupid choice for the questionnaire (not for other part of the site, though).
Unfortunately, nothing more to say than that, and to ask you please to accept our excuses. Jullienn (talk) 07:48, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
We are working to extend the timeout, but it may create some delays on the publication of the page... Jullienn (talk) 09:23, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I won't participate[edit]

since I cannot see any justification why you should collect IP address and user agent. Moreover, I can't see that you communicated this activity in the German-language Wikipedia. Mautpreller (talk) 21:18, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
