Secure data and devices

What is it

[edit]

Data and device security refers to protecting the data at rest on your phone or laptop (photos, files, contacts, call logs, location data, …) and the data your device is a gateway to (apps and software installed, browsing histories, …).

Why is it important

[edit]

Think of device security measures as digital bodyguards – the recommendations below help you protect your data, keep your system secure from threats, prevent loss of important information, and block unauthorized access.

What can you do to protect yourself

Recommendations Tools and resources

Cybercriminals and other bad actors can use weaknesses in your device’s operating system or apps to attack you – so-called “unpatched exploits”. When a new update is available, immediately install it to enable the security upgrades that fix these weaknesses. Make sure to remove old and unused apps – every piece of software increases these potential points of vulnerability.

Use antivirus software to protect your device from malicious software specifically designed to damage or gain unauthorized access to your devices. Your device may have built-in antivirus software, or you can use a third-party provider.

If your device is lost or stolen, the data on it can be read or copied. Enable full disk encryption to protect all data at rest on your hard drive and protect yourself against unauthorized access and data breaches.

Set a strong locking option for your device to help protect it from unwanted access. Use a 6-digit passcode or custom alphanumeric code for stronger protection. Depending on your jurisdiction and context, examine whether biometric locking is a good option for you.

Create periodic backups of your devices to prevent data loss in case of device loss, theft or compromise. If possible, store your backup on a physical hard drive rather than in the cloud.
