Aethelwolf Emsworth[edit]

The following request is closed.

I ask the renaming of my four alternative accounts, the main one to "Æo", which is coined with the vowels of "Aethelwolf Emsworth", and the other three to "Æo" plus a varying number.

The four accounts are currently blocked on the English Wikipedia because I used three of them while one was under a two-months topic ban. They were never conceived as malicious alternative accounts, and I used them to edit slightly different themes/different pages within the same topic.

Over last July I have had an email exchange with the Arbitration Committee of the English Wikipedia. According to their analysis, they have determined that my accounts were not illegitimate before the topic ban, although their use became illegitimate as I continued to use three of them during the topic ban. They have not unblocked me for now, and they will hear an appeal in the next months. However, they have explicitly allowed me to request a renaming to address my need to increase my privacy.

I may forward the Arbitration Committee's email if needed.--Aethelwolf Emsworth (talk) 21:31, 1 August 2018 (UTC)

I was requested to comment here by Alaa. This is a big misrepresentation of what the Arbitration Committee sent Aethelwolf.
First, we cannot authorize, nor did we authorize a username change. The user was pointed to Special:GlobalRenameRequest and told they could make a request there. There was no pre-approval by the committee for this to occur.
Second, I quote from our email, we said "did violate the policy on sockpuppetry and knowingly violated your topic ban. Even if your alternate accounts were originally legitimate, they became illegitimate when they were used to evade your topic ban". The committee noted there was no abuse of power by the community when enacting the topic ban and noted we do not overturn them.
The user was then asked to appeal 6 months down the road. I hope this clarifies the issue. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 16:01, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
@DeltaQuad: Sorry for the misinterpretation, but the email said: "We understand that you have some reputation concerns related to your current block. If this helps address your concerns, you could request to have your account renamed by using this form: This does leave traceable evidence of the old username in logs, and does not update things like old signatures, but it works to obscure the relationship between the new and old names from casual observers." So, may I request the renaming or not?
I originally tried to use Special:GlobalRenameRequest, but the request was rejected. So, I submitted this request to provide an explanation about why I was asking a renaming request. As for the rest, I am blocked for having evaded a topic ban and I will have to submit an appeal in six months, this is clear and was not the issue here.--Aethelwolf Emsworth (talk) 16:13, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
You absolutely can request it. I'm not declining it nor approving it, because i'm not a global renamer or a steward, so I don't have the power to. It's up to those people to decide if you can have it or not. And while your ban may not be the issue here, you brought it up, so I clarified what we actually said. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 17:07, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. I just thought that the Arbitration Committees had some authority on Meta stewards' decisions. So, Alaa, please decide what to do. If you will decide not to rename the accounts, it will be fine anyway and I'll ask a renaming only in the case I will be unblocked in the future.--Aethelwolf Emsworth (talk) 17:54, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
To clarify: English Wikipedia arbcom has no authority/power outside the domain — regards, Revi 18:01, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes. I thought that since I am blocked on the English Wikipedia, the renaming might not be approved, as it has been the case for other users with blocked accounts, as I have read on this page. So, I thought that the Arbitration Committee's pronouncement might have some weight to legitimise the renaming.--Aethelwolf Emsworth (talk) 21:47, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Also, let me explain what are the privacy/reputation reasons why I thought to resort to the renaming in the first place: I work as a researcher in the academia, and some collegues know that I edited Wikipedia with the account "Aethelwolf Emsworth"; the fact that I have been blocked might constitute a source of shame, especially since the tag on the accounts is generic (it says simply that I am "blocked for sockpuppetry", which may mean a lot of things).
Besides, I like the new name "Æo", and since my accounts were not intended as malicious, and they never interacted in articles and discussions, I have no problem in linking them under the same name. I would have asked a merger of the accounts if it were possible.--Aethelwolf Emsworth (talk) 16:57, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

Requests involving merges, usurps or other complications[edit]

@Nicapicella: @NicApicella: Hello, yes nothing goes wrong during login unification as the account names were different (capital A). Anyways right now we can rename NicApicella to NicApicella (usurped) and Nicapicella to NicApicella as you want only one account. If that's what you want please sign below my comment using account Nicapicella. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 15:39, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for your help! Well, "nothing goes wrong" … somehow the email address on one account got mangled; but anyway, I'll get that fixed myself. Your proposed changes seem to make sense to me, but I still have one more question: Would I still have (some kind of) access to the user NicApicella (usurped) or would it be locked (in some way)? Thing is, I have a couple edits on both accounts and I'm still not sure myself what the best outcome could be since merging is not possible. --NicApicella (talk) 09:44, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
@NicApicella: Along with usernames, credentials are also transfered to new usernames. So yes you can access NicApicella (usurped) normally as you do. We can also rename it to something like NicApicella alt if you want to use that account later. Also please sign in below using Nicapicella account, so we can comfirm you have acsess to that account. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 12:26, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
Perfect, yes, something like NicApicella (alt) would be ideal (sounds less … ominous than usurped). Thank you! --Nicapicella (talk) 11:28, 1 August 2018 (UTC)

Lucas san[edit]

X mark.svg Not done @Lucas san: as mentioned hereUser who requests usurpation must have at least 400 edits or be an administrator on some Wikimedia project. You've 25 edits. Plus target account doesn't meet the criteria for usurpation. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 06:53, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
