This page hosts requests for a username change. Please read the instructions before posting a request. Global username changes may also be requested here to be done by stewards and global renamers.

This is also the page where stewards can be requested to deal with problems relating to the unified login feature. These include:

  • Usurpation of accounts
  • Deletion of global accounts
Cross-wiki requests
Meta-Wiki requests

Before posting here[edit]

Please list the specific projects that you need to be renamed in under your request, unless you are requesting a global rename.

How to add an entry here[edit]

To add an entry, please copy and paste the text below into the appropriate section.

=== Oldname ===
|status =
|domain = global
|Oldname =
|Newname =
|reason = (your remarks here)

For example:

For global rename requests:

=== Example@global ===
|status     = <!--don't change this line-->
|domain     = global
|Oldname    = Example
|Newname    = Foo
|reason     = your remarks here

Making a request for your own account[edit]

For changing your username on one wiki:

Please include the following information in your request:

  • the old username,
  • the new username,
  • please sign ~~~~ request with your account for a simple move (first section), or sign this request with both the originating and the target accounts if you are requesting a merge (second section).

If anything is missing from your request, a steward will request more information. This helps ensure that you are requesting a rename for your own account. Please check before posting your request that the username you want is available. You can test that by going to the (new) user page and looking into the sidebar. If there is a link to user contributions, the account already exists, or check via Special:CentralAuth.

Private requests[edit]

Requests that need to be made in private should be sent to stewards(at) (direct wiki-email interface).

Simple rename requests[edit]

If your rename request requires no stewardship, you have two options:

  1. Use the (new) request form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest; or
  2. Utilise the manual process outlined above, and submit it below in this section.

Please add new requests at the end of the section. Sections should be titled your username@global if you wish to be globally renamed. Please use this tool to check if the username is taken before filing a request.

You should ask this user if they are willing to give the username up. Only if they agree this rename can proceed. Ruslik (talk) 20:49, 17 September 2015 (UTC)

Requests involving merges, usurps or other complications[edit]

Please add new requests at the end of the section. Sections should be titled your username@global and requests should be signed by both the source (from) and target (to) user accounts.

Per usurpation policy you don't have enough edits to request a usurp. --Steinsplitter (talk) 16:13, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
See i am a regular editor with multiple good edits,Is there any other way ? Hitch Hicking Across Sahara (talk) 09:22, 17 September 2015 (UTC)

Re-unite accounts that had been split by SUL finalization[edit]

User:Stryn You wrote "all your accounts can be merged" [4] But how is the procedure? Assume one has

  • John (main account, from enwiki)
  • John~commonswiki
  • John~eswiki
  • John~frwiki
  • John~itwiki
  • John~ptwiki

etc 12:02, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

I didn't get a ping as you didn't add a signature in your first edit. As written on the SRUC "Wikimedia Foundation staff have revealed that they believe the account merge tool will not be available soon, and there is no exact timeframe at the moment." In April I thought that it would be available very soon, but unfortunately things have changed, and thus it's not possible to merge your accounts into one. --Stryn (talk) 16:55, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
User:Stryn, thanks for your reply. The renaming removed proper attribution of edits and might be a violation of author rights. From User:Maintenance script it looks as if User:Keegan (WMF) is guilty of doing the splits. Keegan, what about reverting splits? 17:15, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
All accounts like John~frwiki can be renamed back manually by stewards. Ruslik (talk) 17:41, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
@Stryn, Ruslik0: The IPs above (91.9.XX.XX) are sockpuppets of Tobias Conradi (aka Tamawashi) and are blocked by a range block on Wikidata. See also Requests_for_comment/Global_ban_for_Tobias_Conradi. --AmaryllisGardener talk 00:17, 9 October 2015 (UTC)

@Raan: Curunir has 477 edits and therefor we can't usurp the account. Please select a new name. --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:35, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
Ok my request is not necessary thanksRaan (talk) 17:54, 9 October 2015 (UTC)

@Eölen: Account "Noé" exists yet. --Steinsplitter (talk) 16:45, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
Where? I can't find it Eölen (talk) 16:47, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
@Eölen: See Special:CentralAuth/Noé. --I am k6ka Talk to me! See what I have done 17:06, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
Alright, it's weird that it does not appear when I looked for it. This account is not in use for more than a year and it only have one contribution. It was created by an admin in 2003 for his son, I sent him a message, but his last edit was almost a year ago. I think we can freeze this request until he answer.
I think I also trip the AntiSpoof extension because there is also an almost similar name Noe in en.wikipedia, but no edit since 2010. I took a look at a proposal for criteria and in such case it's all on you. Eölen (talk) 17:38, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
@Eölen: The user has made a valid edit here and there is User:Noe with +4000 edits which is causing a anti spoof (= username too similar) conflict. You might want to add something to Noé, for example "Noe first two latters of surname". --Steinsplitter (talk) 09:48, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
@Steinsplitter: The valid edit with the Noé account was made by Aoineko, who then came back to his own account. As I wrote, he created this account for his son. I sent him a message, he answered he will ask to his son. The account User:Noe decided to change his name to User:Nø and is now using only this account. As I wrote earlier, I will wait Aoineko's answer. If it's possible, a shorter name is better. Eölen (talk) 18:04, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
Ok. Please note that a confirmation edit by Noe is needed. Then we can rename you to Noe :). --Steinsplitter (talk) 18:10, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
I am global user user:Nø, and I confirm that I used to be user:Noe on English wikipedia and (as far as I recall) Danish wikipedia and Mediawiki. I changed to Nø because (a) that's actually my initials, and (b) I couldn't globalize Noe as it was taken on some wikis.-- (talk) 19:41, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
Me again, now logged in as user:Noe, confirming I now edit using the username user:Nø only. I see this page is at mediawiki where I have no user page; please see [5] resp. [6] instead.--Noe (talk) 19:47, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
Great! So, thanks to Noe/Nø! Aoineko answered on his French Wikipedia talk page saying is son is ok to let me use his name User:Noé. He say it may be better to first change his name to User:Noebe and then rename my account to User:Noé (with a diacritic é please). I am sorry to raise such a complex case! Eölen (talk) 23:09, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
@Eölen: We can rename you to Noe, but not _Noé_ (barbecue confirmation edit is missing and the user has a valid edit). Please be moor specific. --Steinsplitter (talk) 10:07, 10 October 2015 (UTC)
@Steinsplitter: I prefer Noé with a diacritic. I asked User:Noe because of the similarity of the name. I also asked w:fr:Noé user. So, to sketch up the story: User:Aoineko got a son in 2003 and he creates a fr.Wikipedia profile for his son, named Noé. Once in 2013, Noé made an edit and then his father did some copy edit (see history of the article). I can't say if it was a mislog or a lesson Aoineko gave to his son. Then, this week, I (still Eölen) sent a message on the French Wikipedia Aoineko talk page to explain my will to rename my account. He asked to his son and then reply both agree to offer me the account name. They suggest to rename Noé to Noebe first and then rename Eölen to Noé. I hope I made it clear this time. I am sorry, I didn't get your expression barbecue confirmation edit. Eölen (talk) 11:13, 10 October 2015 (UTC)
@Eölen: There is no proof that the account is belong to some users sohn. We need a confirmation edit from _Noé_ - if Noé can't make a confirmation edit we can't rename. I have nothing to add to my previous comments. (Pinging @K6ka: for some thoughts.) --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:31, 10 October 2015 (UTC)
I would agree that Noé needs to make a confirmation edit first, in order to prove that they do indeed agree to the usurpation. Also, I'm guessing the barbecue confirmation edit was a translation error. --I am k6ka Talk to me! See what I have done 13:35, 10 October 2015 (UTC)
