Subhas Chandra Bose's 125th birth anniversary Wikimedia celebration is a series of Wikimedia events and activities to be taken place between 23 January 2021 and 23 January 2022. 23 January 2022 is the 125th birth anniversary of Indian freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose and West Bengal Wikimedians intend to organise events and programs to improve free content on different Wikimedia projects related to Bose, his life, and his work.
Background[edit]
West Bengal Wikimedians has been regularly conducting activities to improve freely-licensed high-quality content on Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, Wikisource, and other Wikimedia projects. In August–September 2020, we conducted a Wikisource proofreading contest to commemorate the 200th birth anniversary of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. We also conduct an annual 3-month-long Wikisource proofreading contest to celebrate the literary works of Rabindranath Tagore. Similarly, on Wikidata, we manage and work on a WikiProject Rabindranath Tagore to improve data related to the poet's works. Back in 2013, a current member of West Bengal Wikimedians lead a year-long Wiki-initiative to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
In December 2020 West Bengal Wikimedians discussed the idea to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of Subhas Chandra Bose. Subsequently, an initial plan was drafted and an initial blog post was published on 24 December 2020. This plan was also included in the user group's annual plan submitted to Wikimedia Foundation (Rapid Grant application).
An online call was arranged by West Bengal Wikimedians on 23 January 2021 (124th birth anniversary of Subhas Chandra Bose). On the same day, the celebration was inaugurated and an email was sent to Wikimediaindia-l , Wikimedia-l, Bangladesh mailing list informing the same.
